Our involvement
DERMATOLOGIKUM HAMBURG continues the tradition
of the eminent dermatology professor Paul Gerson Unna,
who founded the first DERMATOLOGIKUM in Hamburg
at the end of the 19th century. The use of the name is a
homage to him and his life’s work. His concept of paral-
lelism between clinical care and teaching set the example
for the DERMATOLOGIKUM and the creation of our
STIFTUNG DERMATOLOGIKUM HAMBURG foun-
dation, which grants bursaries to young doctors from
medically underserved countries. Further information:
www.stiftungdermatologikum.de.
We support professional exchange and dermatological
training at national and international level. We offer
intensive histopathological courses run by PD Dr. med.
Almut Böer-Auer and Dr. med. Norbert Blödorn-Schlicht
several times a year. Prof. Steinkraus and Prof. Reich
hold revision classes for prospective specialist doctors,
and the International Academy DER MATOLOGIKUM
HAM BURG organises workshops on core topics within
dermatology. Medical students can attend our clinical-
pathological seminars and intensive courses. For further

OUTPATIENT DERMATOLOGY

No other human organ can be examined as easily and
at the same time as effectively as the skin. Our team of
doctors works to keep your skin healthy. Thanks to speci-
alisations within their area of expertise, they can treat the
whole spectrum of skin diseases. One of the focus areas
in our dermatological consultations is the prevention and
treatment of skin cancer.
With its various gradations, skin cancer is one of the most
common forms of cancer, but is also curable in almost
all cases, as long as it is recognised at an early stage. The
preventive examinations in our practice are performed
using modern reflected-light microscopes and computer-
supported documentation (video dermatoscopy). You will
only be examined by experienced specialist dermatologists,
who will also determine your individual risk profile and use
it to establish sensible examination intervals for check-ups.

When it comes to treating skin cancer, our specialist
doctors use all methods that are recommended according
to the latest scientific discoveries and the guidelines from
professional medical associations. Operative procedures
(in cooperation with our plastic surgeons if required), local
treatment to activate the immune system and special light
therapy (photodynamic therapy) are available.
DERMATOLOGIKUM HAMBURG has four fully equip-
ped operating theatres and, as it is an accredited private
clinic, it is also able to monitor and care for inpatients
after surgery.

ALLERGOLOGY, OCCUPATIONAL DER MATOLOGY AND PHOTO-DER MATOLOGY
Allergies and intolerances are not minor illnesses. They can
be chronic and significantly detrimental to quality of life.
Definitively ascertaining the substances that cause an
allergy or intolerance is decisive in successfully treating
it. Precise diagnosis requires a detailed medical history,
on the basis of which the required examinations such as
skin tests, laboratory diagnostics and – if suitable – pro-
vocation tests can be requested. Beyond that, we can also
make use of an interdisciplinary network of specialists in
paediatrics, internal medicine and ear, nose and throat
medicine, as well as psychologists and nutritionists.
‘ The symptoms of allergies are extremely varied. Thanks to innovative methods such as molecular allergy diagnosis, allergic diseases can be detected and treated in an increasingly targeted manner.’ PRIV.- DOZ. DR. MED. DIETER VIELUF Head of the centre for allergology
D I A G N O S I S A N D T R E AT M E N T F O R T H E S K I NPAGE 24//25
Holistic patient care is an essential part of our work.
Specific recommendations on treatment and prevention of
allergic diseases are complemented by nutritional advice
and information on concepts for skin protection and
care. Those with chronic conditions (e.g. neurodermati-
tis) experience long-term support and accompaniment
from our team. The parents of children with illnesses
receive comprehensive advice so that they can help in
successful treatment.
In addition to the focus areas of allergies and intolerances,
we treat patients with skin conditions related to their
occupation and skin diseases caused by UV light. Due to
its anti-inflammatory qualities, UV light can also have a
healing effect on some skin conditions. For that reason,
light therapy is used as an additional treatment in some
cases of neurodermatitis, psoriasis and vitiligo. Every
patient of ours receives a UV record with the details of
the type and dose of light treatment carried out.

PAEDIATRIC DER MATOLOGY
PAGE 28//29
In paediatric consultation, our specialist doctors deal
with the specific requirements and illnesses relating to
children’s skin. The focus is not only on children; their
parents are also involved in every step of the diagnosis
and treatment. Our doctors take care to provide age-
appropriate explanations and examine their patients in
a room specially equipped for them, in order to create a
trusting treatment atmosphere.
The paediatric consultation is run by Dr. med. Barbara
Kunz, a specialist in dermatology and allergology. She
is a member of the board of the European Society for
Pediatric Dermatology (ESPD) and a qualified neuroder-
matitis and psoriasis trainer.

Treatment spectrum
A broad range of modern methods are available to us for
the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases, using which
even the rarer illnesses can be recognised.
Children often suffer from infectious diseases (warts,
bacterial skin infections, inf lamed insect bites/stings
and fungal skin infections), treatment of which can be
optimally adjusted through targeted diagnosis in our
internal laboratories.
Another area of expertise is the treatment of neuroderma-
titis. The holistic therapy concept includes a comprehen sive
consultation on the correct skin care, nutritional advice
and the creation of an individual treatment plan. This
in cludes an ‘emergency strategy’ to deal with an acute
epi sode and help in alleviating itchiness.

Prevention is especially important for children. In the
paediatric consultation, we provide detailed advice on
sun and UV protection. Hereditary and acquired moles
and pigmentations are monitored using a dermatoscope.
For reliable check-ups, individual moles can be recorded
using video dermatoscopy and directly compared to look
for any changes. Small surgical skin interventions are
carried out by experienced surgeons who deal sensitively
with children in this special situation.

‘ Prevention is better than cure in medicine. That particularly applies to the surface organ of the skin.’ PROF. DR. MED. VOLKER STEINKRAUS
The skin and the mind are closely connected. We address
this special connection in our psychosomatic dermatology
consultation, in which dermatological and psychological
illnesses that cause and exacerbate one another are treated.
A holistic understanding of health plays an essential role
in that process.
The psychosomatic consultation is run by Dr. med. Thilo
Evers, a specialist in dermatology, psychotherapy (based
on depth psychology) and allergology and an MBSR*
teacher. The consultation provides an opportunity for
detailed and trusting advice. We can either provide
appointments for initial psychotherapeutic discussions
and further treatments ourselves without long waiting
times or give referrals.

why the centre for cosmetic dermatology, plastic surgery
and laser medicine at DERMATOLOGIKUM HAMBURG
is located in a separate wing of the building with its own
reception (second floor, left), waiting area and recuperation
area. We uphold standards of the greatest prudence and
precision in medical treatment together with care and

The area of cosmetic and plastic-surgery medicine has
seen enormous growth in significance in recent years.
Our specialist doctors select methods for you that are
highly effective and guaranteed to be safe. The best result
is often achieved via a combination of various methods.
A convincing treatment concept must therefore be prece-
ded by a detailed consultation. Our centre stands out

standards, is both large and modern.
Our team
At the centre, you will be treated by doctors who are experts
in plastic surgery and dermatology and have specialised
and developed their expertise through comprehensive
training and practical experience. DERMATOLOGIKUM
HAMBURG has been a source of research and treatment

nationally qualified as a specialist doctor for plastic and
cosmetic surgery, has been active in that area since the
year 2000 and has performed more than 10,000 treat-
ments and operations.
The laser medicine is led by Dr. med Nicola Otte. She is an

Interdisciplinary cooperation
Many patients come to us with questions and illnesses
that cover various areas. Diagnosis of skin changes and
other findings that require clarification takes place in
our own laboratories for histology, molecular biology,
immunology and microbiology. As a matter of principle,
findings are examined by two dermatopathology specialists.
Short chains of command allow quick exchange between
doctors and the laboratory team. These advantages make
us a reference centre and point of contact for second
opinions. Interdisciplinary cooperation is invaluable in
the treatment of tumours in particular. We look after
our patients from skin cancer screening to all required
laboratory examinations, medicinal therapies and sur-
gical removal of tumours, including the corresponding
aftertreatment.
Our specialist doctors work together closely with the
medical cosmetics department. Our beauticians offer
specially coordinated care concepts. This means the
skin can be ideally prepared for cosmetic treatments and
regenerate better thereafter.

Focus areas of the venous department
We are a centre of excellence for gentle intravascular
catheter procedures that has been continuously expanded
since it was founded in 2005 by Dr. med. Jens Alm, chief
physician of the department. 3,800 catheter operations
are performed each year.
Ours is one of the few medical facilities in Germany where
recurring varicosis (varicose veins that have already been
treated once but return) can be treated as an outpatient
procedure. This means inpatient stays in the clinic are
no longer necessary.
Our specialist doctors not only select the right, above
all gentle, therapy from the various treatment methods
available, they also ensure that the risk of recurrence is
as low as possible.
In cooperation with dermatologists, even wounds that
are difficult to take care of can be successfully treated in
an interdisciplinary wound consultation.
Treatment of varicose veins is now covered by many
statutory health insurance companies in Germany.

Treatment of acne, rosacea and perioral dermatitis is
effectively supported by our department for medical
cosmetics. Inf lammatory facial skin conditions are
characterised by a protracted or chronic progression
and heavy psychological strain that require patient and
close accompaniment.
As well as treatment of dermatological conditions to ac-
company therapy, our medical beauticians offer selected
cosmetic treatments that refine and optically rejuvenate
the appearance of skin. The skin can be ideally prepared
for many medical treatments in cosmetic dermatology
(including Fraxel and pigment lasers, as well as surgical
procedures) by our beauticians and also receive regene-
rative treatment by them thereafter.
In 2016, medical cosmetics took over new rooms on the
ground floor at Stephansplatz. The new space, with gene-
rously sized cubicles, makes treatment in a particularly
calm atmosphere possible, while remaining close to the
doctors providing treatment at DERMATOLOGIKUM

state-recognised training) accompany you along the path
to healthy skin and motivate you to persevere through
treatment.

Quick and precise laboratory diagnostics are decisive in
first-class medical care. Diagnostics for our patients are
carried out in our own laboratories, with results generally
available in just 24 hours. Our laboratory team comprises
30 members of staff, including eight doctors specialising
in dermatological histology, dermatology and pathology,
as well as molecular biologists and microbiologists.
The high standards and wide range of laboratory pro-
cedures is used by far more than 100 dermatologists in
Germany and abroad. This laboratory accepts samples
from dermatologists and takes on the entire skin diagnosis
in the laboratory. The doctors who send samples can rely
on quick and meaningful findings. For more information,
you can request our laboratory brochure and a starter
pack with all the necessary dispatch materials.

and will receive a transparent written invoice in line with
the official scale of fees for physicians (GOÄ). In general,
patients with statutory insurance must cover the treatment
costs themselves.
How long is the wait for an operation?
We can perform necessary operations in our operating
theatres within the practice without long waiting times,

@dermatologikum.de). Subsequent appointments, e.g.
for specific required tests, are arranged directly with the
staff in the allergy department.
How do I arrange an appointment for medical cosmetics?Medical cosmetic treatments first require a diagnosis
by one of our specialist doctors (e.g. in treatments for
acne, rosacea or perioral dermatitis). The appointment
can be arranged in the practice at the main reception
or by telephone on +49 (0)40-35 10 75-211. Cosmetic
treatments such as Jetpeel or microdermabrasion can be
arranged in the department for medical cosmetics itself.
Please contact the reception there to do so.
What do I need to be aware of when arranging an appointment for hypersensitisation?
Following the required initial discussion, appointments
are arranged via the main reception. Please check in there
before each hypersensitisation appointment, too. After
the hypersensitisation there is 30 minutes’ observation
time, as allergic reactions can occur in this period. Please
always factor this time into your planning. The reaction
is documented after each treatment.
How can I get help in case of emergency during the night, at weekends or on public holidays?
A DERMATOLOGIKUM HAMBURG doctor can be reached
outside consultation hours in an emergency on the number
+49 (0)175-20 30 20 3. Alternatively, you can consult a
hos pital with a dermatology department. In Hamburg,
these are the Universitätskrankenhaus Eppendorf and
the Asklepios Klinik St. Georg.
Why can receptionists not tell me in advance how much my treatment will cost?Unfortunately, our receptionists cannot provide that ser-
vice as they are not able to estimate what diagnosis and
therapy your doctor will carry out. For some treatments,
however, (e.g. laser appointments), guideline costs can
be provided in advance. Our receptionists will give you
as much information as they can.

PROF. PAUL GERSON UNNA (1850–1929)
At the end of the 19th century, eminent Hamburg
dermatologist Professor Paul Gerson Unna founded an
institute for the diagnosis and therapy of skin diseases
in Hamburg, which he named DERMATOLOGIKUM.
The reuse of this name is a homage
to Unna and commemorates
his exceptional contribution to
dermatology.
