Definition of Dhvani
A , category of medieval Indian
poetics, according to which the
artistic enjoyment from literary
works is achieved not by the images
that are created by the direct
meaning of the words but by the
associations and ideas that are
evoked by these images like.
What is Dhvani?
Dhvani means ‘Nad’ or voice. If any bird is making voice that is dhvani. Language is the medium through which we can communicate. But Dhvani is the medium of language. Language exist because of Dhvani. This is general meaning now let’s understand in deep.
“Suggestion is the soul of poetry” Ananadvardhana
disscused the concept of Dhvani in details into the “Dhavayaloka” . There is no only consumption of meaning but the suggestion of the word. Because each and every time, word doesn’t convey the actual meaning so there the description to understand Dhavani.
Three kinds of word power
Abhidha
Lakshana
Vyanjana
Abhidha It means we get direct
meaning from the sentence that we call Abhidha. For example as under,
- Cow is eating grass.- Raju is reading a book.
From these both sentences we can get direct meaning and that is Abhidha.
Lakshana
Lakshana means we can’t get direct meaning. In Guajarati we can say ‘Vachyarth’, We can’t understand direct meaning from sentence as under,- Mountain and Squirrel had a quarrel.- Ame road par rahie chie. (Guajarati)In these both the sentences we can’t take direct meaning.
Vyanjana
Vyanjana means we can get direct meaning but we can’t take it. We have to take another meaning. As under,‘Mitha madhu ne mitha mehula re lol, ethi mithite mori mat re…’In this line we can see that we take direct meaning but it is incomplete. Mithite mori mat it not mean that her test is better than ‘madh’ but her love is more than those madhu and mehula. And this is Vyanjana.
Kinds of Dhvani
Vastu Dhvani
Alamkar
Dhvani
Rasa Dhvani
Conclusion So after all we can say that
wonderful concept of Dhvani discussed by Ananadvardhana. And through this process we can also understand minutely about language that how we are speaking sentences.
