The concept of “mirrored city” was loosely inspired by our Melbourne visit. The city’s grid system is created through the layering of contrasting patterns notably in the form of alley ways and small streets. This gives the city an identity of unexpected form which pervades the physical form and the psychological interpretations of those incident upon it.

MPA celebrates the art of Pacific Islanders through the expression of its exhibition spaces located in the context of Cockatoo Island. It responds functionally to the needs of the museum through the circulation between its exhibition spaces whilst providing access to a shop, café and offices. The organization of spaces and the location of the site respond to the concept of creating exhibition spaces with consideration of the Pacific Islanders’ art. The Museum of Pacific Art provides a “tunneling” experience through its spaces, creating a new identity through merging Pacific Art with Cockatoo Island.
