Initiative on the square

Observations

Participating locals tend to focus on events in their own street.

Active locals are not representative for their neighbourhood

Current initiatives often focus on immediate, short term issues such as littering or vandalism.

Social capital

In order to become a successful society of participation, it is important to become conscious of which type

of social capital is most necessary. (Sander & Lowney, 2005).

Outcome

The steps towards the realisation of a liveability-related goal are as valuable as, if not more valuable than the eventual results.

A new dialogue

Initiatives will have to structure their activities.

Civil servants will need to empathise with local initiators.
