MTM: Research groeps: Composite Materials

The Composite Materials Group has four researchfocuses:• Composites on Micro- and Nano- Level: “engineering” by intelligent

placement of nano-reinforcements• Composites on Macro- and Meso- Level: experimental and

modelling studies of textile composites, random fibre composites, textiles, porous materials and biomaterials

• Natural and biobased composites: fibre morphology and mechanical performance, fibre-matrix interfacial adhesion, novel fibre processing methods

• Processing and product development: concurrent optimisation of products and manufacturing processes

MTM: Research groeps: Metals and Alloys

The Metals and Alloys group deals mainly with theplasticity of advanced metallic materials. Its activitiesinclude: • Analysing and modelling of microstructure and texture evolution during

plastic deformation• Deriving physics-based constitutive laws for their mechanical

behaviour• Developing dedicated characterisation methods for their complex

microstructures• Participating in the development of innovative deformation processes

MTM: Research groeps: MaterialsPerformance and Non-Destructive TestingThe Materials Performance and Non-destructiveTesting group investigates the long-term behaviour andreliability of materials. Damage development duringdifferent loading types is studied, using a number ofNon-destructive and advanced monitoring techniques:Acoustic emission, real-time microfocus X-rayradiography, nano- and micro-computed tomography, eddycurrents, ultrasound, optical fibre sensors etc… Besides polymers, ceramics and metals, research is alsodealing with advanced materials such as particulate orfibre reinforced composites and cellular materials.

MTM: Research groeps: High TemperatureProcesses and Industrial EcologyResearch line: High Temperature Processes andIndustrial Ecology• High temperature metallurgical experimentation and process modelling• Micro-analytical characterisation and in-situ high temperature

observation• Vessel integrity: refractory materials and freeze linings• Industrial ecology• Centre for High Temperature Processes and Sustainable Materials

Management

MTM: Research groeps: SustainabilityAssessments of Material Life CyclesResearch line: Sustainability Assessments of MaterialLife Cycles• Sustainability assessments using LCA, exergy analysis and ELCA, on

a.o. bio-based resins, CFRP composite materials and landfill mining• Development of methodologies to improve the life cycle impact of

materials through closing material loops

MTM: Research groeps: Solidification and Microstructure SimulationResearch line: Solidification and MicrostructureSimulation• Solidification along a eutectic path in ternary alloys • In-situ X-ray monitoring of advanced metallurgical processes under

micro gravity and terrestrial conditions • Microstructure development in quaternary alloys • Calculation of phase diagrams for bulk and nanosystems• Simulation of microstructure evolution during phase transformations,

recrystallisation and grain growth

MTM: Research groeps: Materials for Living SystemsResearch line: Materials for Living Systems• Biomaterials• Bone tissue engineering and scaffolds• Bioreactors• Biosensors and drug delivery• Surface coatings
