“Since its foundation in 1917, the School of Architectural Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens has been a pioneer in the higher education of Greek architects. A basic aim of the School's curriculum is to educate professionals who will develop clear ides and views on architecture, understand in depth the social conditions in which they are going to work and master the essential technical knowledge and sensitivity to cope with the development of architectural ideas.”

“The School has around 1500 undergraduate students and 60 members of teaching staff. It collaborates with other Universities in Greece and abroad through educational programs and student and staff exchanges. It invites regularly guest lecturers, Greek and foreign architects and scientists with interesting contributions in relevant subjects.”

Also ,they have to analyze : -the expansion in height and the vertical

structure and circulation of the building. -the layout and character of interior space,

-the significance of constructional system and the construction materials, colors and lighting during the project elaboration.

-the outdoor public space. - the design of interior and outdoor space into a synthetic cohesion of public use.

Course main aims and priorities

• To elaborate their project using drawings from scale 1:500 for the urban analysis,

• to 1:200,1:100, 1:50 for the drawings and handmade models of the building

formations, • to 1:20,1:10, 1:5 for the detailed drawings and handmade models of the building’s

construction. • 3d digital analysis and representation to

present their project.

This presentation will be referred to : -The important role of the analysis of the” urban” space as a basic parameter for the design procedure.

• The notion of topos (place) and its incorporation in the methodology of the design procedure.

• Urban analysis. Study of the components of the urban tissue as functional units, and also as elements defining the aesthetics of the urban environment.

• Understanding of the relation between parts and whole, volume and void in the urban tissue, blocks, public and private space, streets and communicational axes, urban green spaces.

The project as a paradigm to be built . From the idea to the construction reality The significance of the construction materials, colors and structure . The significance of the analysis tools : the section drawing and models for the understanding of the building structure and form. The use of various techniques such as 3d digital representations and diagrams for the elaboration of the project.

The methodology 1.analysis

Synthesis The formation of the main components of the design process the structure of the building using sketches drawings ,especially the section drawings and the models such as : The investigation of the movements, both vertical and horizontally, from and towards the building. Questions of integration ,the relation of the building with the place that will receive it. built environment, or the landscape, through significant keys as Scale, structure, typology and the corporeity (material ). The use of basic typological models for the elaboration of the project. The different qualities of space through the movement, from closed to open space , from private to the public . The social dimension of architectural practice.

ANALYSIS

an exercise

THE PROJECT Design a library of 100m2-200m2, according to a concept about the experiences of reading in a public place. The plan and section of the library are not predefined , . You must present the atmosphere of the place you want to create, the lighting conditions, the comfort wanted, the visual connection or not with the surrounding space. Choose the main materials to be used in order to define qualities Select in what setting (urban or not) the library will be located in. The exercise focuses on abstract perceptual approach to the experience of reading in a library area of 100-200m2 use drawings, a simple model, collage, or any other combination you choose,, This exercise will be presented in class with PowerPoint presentation (3-7 slides).

the experience of reading

THE GENERAL ISSUES The purpose of this exercise to determine the experience of reading, not so much the library space. Main Issues of concern are: How do I read? How do I read with others and why? The "fetishistic" relation to the book is still valid or is it being gradually replaced by digital reading? What is a library and what does it represent today ? Can a contemporary library relate to any kind of symbolism or symbolic values ?

ANALYSIS

The aim of a museum that concerns on the city determine the character of the Museum that is to be drawn giving your own interpretation for the city of Athens. The New Museum of City of Athens as a place for the comprehension of city of Athens ,the identity of ATHENS today and that one in the future From historical point of you e.t.c.

Exercise 1.

The methodology of work is the following: , analysis of particular characteristics of city of Athens in maps, or in text, in photograph, or in video or with any other means of representation . Hierarchy of characteristics of analysis and syntax of main questions in which the Museum it is called to answer. Creation of diagrams : City ,history ,identity ,collectiveness civilization, tourism .

the “landscape” with a wider sense , in which the project deals with it has certain very particular characteristics such as: The corner. The strong diagonal axis line as a passage from the around area The blank wall of the rear building of Parnassos which dominates in combination the horizontal level in his base and the volume of opposite buildings The conversation with the neoclassical buildings of the existing Museum of city of Athens net to the plot .In the northern side of plot the park of the Klathmonos square] and the underground parking. In the underground area of plot exists the trace of Themistoklean walls of Athens .reading of “landscape” as you wish taking into consideration: The management of limits The movement in the space in relation and with the movements in the environment.
