COMMERCIAL REALITY

PERCEIVED COST INCREASE!

Solutions:> integrated sustainability => good design!

> Knowledgeable and intelligent priorities

> Early intervention and planning

> Capital cost increase on a ‘poor’site = 3.0% 9.8%

CARBON CALCULATORS

Useful but not very effective!

Alternatively utilise EPC approach:

similar to Breeam but less biased;

calculates performance of structure,

fabric and services uses iSBEM

modelling.

Good for existing premises

Calculates best improvements

for least costs

CO2 = 0!

= 5 Watts/m2?

“When you understand all about the sun

and all about the rotation of the earth, you can still miss the radiance of the sun”A.N Whitehead (educational philosopher ) Science and the Modern World

IS THIS THE ANSWER?

HIERARCHY OF ACTION

3Renewables

Efficient energy use

Reduce energy need

VENTILATION AS AN EXAMPLE:

Guidance on ventilation changed

Considerably since 2006

Mott MacDonald undertook major study on naturally vented classrooms:

Windows DO provide adequate ventilation to meet requirements under various legislation

50% of classrooms under ventilated because windows not used!

Perception issues identified

Solution: Old fashioned operable windows!

Example: Sheffield PFI 2 secondary and 2 primary schools

Once installed the team trained and guided staff and pupils on effective use

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

“Our GCSE results and the fact that our students finished top of the national league tables for progress can rightly be attributed to the impact the building has had on their studies.”

STRATEGY FOR DELIVERY!

> Understand the issues and inspire others

> Master plan for delivery strategy

> Select best team for the project

> Ensure communication with other stakeholders

> Develop client brief –unambiguous/measurable

> Expect to have difficulties and plan for them!

> Challenge the compromises especially cost

> Provide feedback and be positive

> Challenge the standard norm

BEWARE!

Do not go gentle into the good night

Old age should burn and rave at the close of the day

Rage, rage against the dying of the light Dylan Thomas

Ignoring climate change will be the most costly of all possible choices, for us and our children
