Clients are asking for consolidated APIs…

Jeff Bezos API mandate for Amazon (edited 2002):

• All teams will expose their data/functionality through APIs.

• Teams must communicate with each other through these interfaces. No other inter-process communication is allowed whatsoever.

• It doesn’t matter what technology you use to do so.

• All API interfaces, without exception, must be designed from the ground up to be externalizable. That is to say, the team must plan and design to be able to expose the interface to developers in the outside world. No exceptions.

• Anyone who doesn’t do this will be fired. Thank you; have a nice day!

“We need a single API to shorten the time to market... We now use several Experian products; coding to a different API for each significantly increases both our costs…

At Amazon, we have many use cases that can leverage the same API. Consolidating these products in as few APIs as possible will allow us to on-board more customers faster.”

— Adel Shrufi, Sr. Software Development Manager, Amazon Transaction Risk Management Systems
