WHAT IS DIABETES???

A GROUP OF METABOLICDISEASES IN WHICH THEREARE HIGH BLOOD SUGARLEVELS OVER A PROLONGEDPERIOD.

SYMPTOMS:

• FREQUENT URINATION

• INCREASED THIRST

• INCREASED HUNGER

• SUDDEN WEIGHT LOSS

IF UNTREATED

• DIABETIC KETO ACIDOSIS

• NEUROPATHY (LEADING TO PAIN IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE BODY)

• HEART DISEASE

• STROKE

• CHRONIC KIDNEY FAILURE

• FOOT ULCERS

• RETINOPATHY (DAMAGE TO THE EYES).

CAUSE:

Diabetes is due to

EITHER THE PANCREAS NOT PRODUCINGENOUGH INSULIN OR

THE CELLS OF THE BODY NOTRESPONDING PROPERLY TO THE INSULINPRODUCED (INSULIN RESISTANCE)

TYPES:

Type 1 DM "Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus" (IDDM)or "Juvenile Diabetes". The cause is unknown.

Type 2 DM "Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus"(NIDDM) or "ADULT-ONSET DIABETES". The primarycause is excessive body weight and not enough exercise.
