Informed Decisions Save Your Community Money
As a Mayor, Council Member, Environmental Com-
mission Member…any elected or appointed official in
your community, you have an influence on your com-
munity’s quality of life. That quality of life includes its
natural resources, housing, recreation, educational and
commercial capacity. The corridors that guide visitors
and your constituents through your community set the
tone for its character, safety and efficiency, hopefully
emphasizing both the beauty and function of its natural
and constructed resources.
Green Assets, Not Brown Liabilities
Whether your community is newly developed, expand-
ing, or in the process of renewal, trees are an important
part of its infrastructure. Your community’s urban for-
est helps define the character of your community, one
that is green, safe and business-friendly.
In particular, trees that line the entrance to your com-
munity guide traffic and views through the residential
and commercial areas and shade and buffer pedestrians
from the hot sun or winter winds.
The information presented within this promotional bro-
chure is meant to emphasize the importance and utility
of two key resources, available at no cost to your com-
munity. “The Road To A Successful Street Tree Master
Plan & The “Master Plan Tutorial Power Point™” series.
As well as The “MnDOT Plant Selector” on-line tool.
*These resources are available at no cost.
Thoughtful Planning or Brown Liabilities?
As with any other effort to develop, improve or renew
a community’s infrastructure, the street tree landscape
benefits most from thoughtful and community-
inclusive planning. All too often, trees become brown
liabilities rather than green assets due to poor tree
species selection, placement and arrangement.
Street Tree Master Plan Tutorial Power Point Developed from the full Master Plan text, The Master Plan
tutorial Power Point™ series was designed as ten, separate
“presentations” or lessons, each representing the ten most
common “Issues” that either “make or break” a street tree
master plan. May be used for workshops, either as the full set
of ten lessons or individual topics for more targeted work-
shops.
The MnDOT Plant Selector
The MnDOT Plant Selector on-line tool was developed to
ease the frustration of selecting the best trees for the most
variable street landscapes. The Plant Selector is very user
friendly with search queries easily narrowed by region,
species and any number of environmental factors. It was
Developed specifically for Minnesota with the singular goal
of creating more effective and economical streetscapes.
Lessons Learned
Thoughtful, well planned and designed street tree landscapes:
Increase commercial traffic and retail sales.
Help control traffic and keep pedestrians safe.
