Dear P4/5 Tuesday 26th May
Good morning everyone. I was so pleased yesterday to see how many of you are managing to use Google Classroom and have handed in
work. Its brilliant. I am certainly learning lots of new skills myself and can see how hard you guys are working. Next week I plan to
move away from adjectives, nouns and verbs and look at instructions.
As usual, any questions, comments or suggestions, please email susan.josey@highland.gov.uk
Literacy
This week we will revise verbs. They can be tricky, so looking at
some youtube clips will hopefully help.
An adjective is a describing word – think of your 5 senses
(taste, touch, sight, hear, smell).
A noun is a name place or thing.
Verbs are doing words – they can be moving/actions, speaking, feeling and thinking.
Starter Activity
You have watched two of these clips
before, but please watch them again
Main Activity
1) Look at the picture above and read
the story starter to set the scene in
Challenge Activity
Setting the Scene
Moments earlier, she had been standing in her
classroom holding the tiny port-key up in her hand,
waiting for the magic to happen. With a flash and a
puff of smoke they had vanished into thin air.
The port-key had taken them to some strange places
before, but never to a jungle. The problem with port-
keys is that you never quite know where you’re going
to end up!
They gazed around them and took in their
surroundings; the heat and jungle noises put the
children on edge - they would have to be very brave
on this wild adventure.
as it will help you remember what
verbs are.
A verb is a doing word. It describes
what someone is doing. They are
really important, as every sentence we
write needs a verb.
1) This clip will help you understand
the difference between
adjectives, nouns and verbs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxrxUyxMnxA
2) This clip gives some simple
sentences and identifies which
words are nouns and which are
verbs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvMFQoOk4To
3) There are some verbs which we use
so often that we don’t even realise
their importance! These are words
like is, am, are, was, were, will be.
They help us put things into the
past, present and future. There
are more, but these are enough for
now. Watch this clip to help you
understand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVzPO1XPCgo
your imagination. Write down as many
words as you can think of to describe
it.
Here are some of my words:
Green, overgrown, hot, scared, jungle,
adventure, amazing.
2) The following sentences are very
boring. Can you use some of the
words you thought of to make them
more interesting? Add adjectives and
nouns.
If you can, add a verb. Here are some
verbs which I think go with the
picture to help.
walk, walks, walked, walking
run, runs, ran, running
slip, slips, slipped, slipping
push, pushes, pushed, pushing
creep, creeps, crept, creeping
swing, swings, swung, swinging
whisper, whispers, whispered,
whispering
Squawk, squawks, squawked,
squawking
Scream, screams, screamed,
screaming
We have done a fair bit of work today,
so I would say, no challenge activity in
literacy for today.
If you really want a bit of an extra
challenge, then take the story starter
at the top of the page and think about
these questions. Write your own story,
or put an ending on the story above.
This should only be done by those who
have a flare to do this today.
What do you think a port-
key is?
What does the port-key look
like?
Where might they have
been on previous
adventures?
How do you think they will
return home after an
adventure?
Where did they get the
port-key from?
If you could go on an
adventure somewhere,
where would you like to go?
Where would you least like
to go on an adventure?
4) There are two worksheets at the
end of the blog for you to
complete. I would say both are
medium
One is revision of adding ‘ing’
One is sorting verbs into similar
meanings.
Sentences to change are:
The girl held the port-key.
There was a bang and some smoke.
The children landed in the jungle
It was hot
They were scared.
My first sentence would be
The shocked, little girl held on
tightly to the port-key as she
wondered what had happened!
Adjectives – shocked, little,
Nouns – girl, port-key
Verbs – tightly, had, wondered, held
Does their teacher know
where they have gone?
Do their classmates know?
.
Numeracy
Today we will continue with weight. You will need to remember;
One hundred milligrams (mg) = 1 gram (g)
1000g = 1 kilogram
1000kg = 1 metric ton
Starter Activity
At the end of today’s blog post,
there is a chart showing Fred’s
Main Activity
There are different types of scales which are
used to weigh different things. What you use
Challenge Activity
I would like you all to have a go at this
challenge activity. When you add
Fresh Fruit sold on Friday. A copy
has been put onto Google
Classroom. Can you work out the
answers to the questions Fred
needs to know? This is different,
so you may find it a bit tricky.
Only do questions you are happy
with and remember to show your
thumb to your adult helper.
Questions 1-3 are mild
Questions 4-6 are medium
Questions 8-10 are Spicy.
Question 7 needs you to know
what 10% of 90 is. At first this
might seem hard, but you can do it
using the knowledge you have of
your 10 times table.
We haven’t done percentages (so
if you please leave this question if
you want to).
You will need your adult helper to
help you read the bar chart, but
hopefully with a bit of guidance,
you will find it ok.
will depend on the size and weight of the object
you want to measure.
At the bottom of the blog there is a worksheet
which gives you pictures of different types of
scales.
For each of the items in the list, can you figure
out…
What is the best unit of measure
(milligrams, grams, kilograms, tonnes)?
What type of scales would you use to
weigh it? Choose one of the pictures on
the sheet.
I have been able to put this one as a Google
document. If you open up the document on the
post, you should be able to write your answers
onto it. When you have finished just hand it
in.
You can always email your answers to Miss
Josey.
weights together it is the same as when
you add up numbers. You just have to
make sure you are adding up the same
type of measurement
mg + mg, 10mg + 12mg = 22mg
g + g, 10g + 12g = 22g
kg + kg, 10kg + 12kg = 22kg
If you want to add mg to g, g to kg, then
you have to change them into the same
measurement unit so…
100mg + 10g = STOP! mg + g NO!
Both need to be either mg OR g.
So change the 100mg into grams.
100mg is the same as 1g (check the
chart above.
And then try the sum again.
1g + 10g = 11g
I hope that makes sense!
Try these
1) 5g + 3g =
2) 17mg + 100mg =
3) 2kg + 1000g = (careful)
4) 50kg + 5000g = (careful)
5) 60kg + 6000g = (careful)
Additional Activity – Baking. This requires Adult supervision
This links in with both our maths topic of measurement and our literacy topic next week which will be ‘instructions’. I know Miss
Warburton has already done some work with you on instructions, so that is great. Careful with the weighing and measuring. If
you don’t like, or don’t have the ingredients, ask your adult helper for a
simple recipe you can follow.
You must only do this activity if you are supervised by an adult.
Cheese Straws
Ingredients
55 g butter (diced)
110g plain flour
85g Cheddar (grated)
1 egg (beaten in cup)
Method
First preheat the oven to 200C/400F/gas mark 6.
Sieve the flour into the bowl.
Add the butter to the flour and mix until it looks like bread crumbs. Ask an adult how to do this.
Stir in the grated cheese and the beaten egg until you form a soft dough.
Take a chunk of dough and roll it out on a floured board into 1cm thick, finger length straws.
Place on a greased baking tray (or use grease proof paper) and bake for 10 minutes.
Cool on a wire rack.
