We’re full of the joys of spring at Deal Hound Towers. We’ve been working overtime to bring you even more fabulous stuff! We’ve crammed in another competition! Now you can win not only cinema
tickets but an amazing chocolate cup cake too! (P16)
There’s also some important anniversaries. With the 70 year celebration of VE Day we’re honouring our armed forces and those that lived through WW2 (P14), and there’s our 30 years’ tribute for the miners (p12).We’re getting more into the music scene in Donny too, the bands are amazing and I’m totally enjoying speaking to them about their musical aspirations. This issue we speak to One Night Stand (p18)The Donny bars are a credit to us with Cask Bar raising money in their Mental Health Awareness Week until April 5th (p8) and the Horse and Groom for their Help For Heroes night on April 25th (p18)I am so proud of Doncaster, with so many people doing so much for their fellow Doncastrians. This town is truly special.
Until next time Julie

Things to do in and around Doncaster
Well me and Jo are doing great, she’s been
looking after me nicely since I had an unlucky
footballing accident. I was walking into
Rovers’ sacred ground, tripped and badly
sprained my ankle. With unbearable pain,
in Stuart Pearce style, I bravely managed to
see the game through. However I thought
it prudent to rest up. After all my hero
Kevin Keegan says that cramp is worse than
a broken leg! Well a sprain is worse than a
mere cramp, so I reckon it must be as bad as
a Barry Sheen type broken leg (and you can’t
mess with that).
ESPN FCESPN FCAnyway since I’ve been laid up for a while
I thought I’d
review some
free apps for
you.
ESPN FCESPN FCI had the idea
because Jo
doesn’t like
the sky Sports’
Channel. So I
downloaded
the ESPN FC
app. It’s brill
and I can
quickly check
out my teams in the blink of an eye (without
Jo noticing). In a couple of secs I know the
latest scores, news and league table. To
be honest I don’t know why I haven’t had it
before. Search ESPN FC either at the App
store or Google Play to download.

ExpensifyExpensifyI have to travel bit for work now, it’s a real pain because I have to do expenses. Sounds great but I let them build up until I can’t remember what I’ve claimed and what’s outstanding, so I downloaded the Expensify app. I can track mileage, scan in receipts, get it all up to date then just email it across. They all think I’m dead organised now, but it’s so simple it’s a bit of a cheat. Search Expensify either at the App store or Google Play to download.
ElevateMy favourite app is Elevate, again there’s a great free version and it was Apple’s 2014 app of the year. I can train my brain by remembering words, names, word usage and maths. It’s great to see the scores when they keep rising…but a bit of a bummer when they fall! Download it and see how you get on. Search Elivate either at the App store or Google Play to download.
Log Me InFinally the most useful app is log me in. I can control all my social media from one login, even gmail, dropbox and Skype. It’s so smooth to slip from say twitter to facebook and Instagram. This comes in really handy because Jo loves her selfi es, so you can see our smiling faces everywhere!Search LogMeIn either at the App store or Google Play to download.
Well that’s it for this issue, see you next time.

Could you be one of my tasters?Could you be one of my tasters?
I had a brilliant idea, it started because I
had 4 birthdays coming up. It’s diffi cult to
know what to get people and because there
were so many, I decided to “let them eat
cake!” For the fi rst one I went to Sainsbury’s
and then I decided to try some others for
comparison. When I told people about my
quest I discovered that learning about the best
option, in just about anything really, seems
to be in vogue. People asked me to review
wrinkle creams, bubble bath, pies, Ice cream,
thermals ( actually I think that the last one was
a bit weird, but a request is a request!). So my
mission is to taste test lots of lovely things
that we would otherwise take for granted. Are
you with me in this? I hope so, if you would
like to test things for me please email me at
juliesjaunts@thedealhound.co.uk. You will
have to be totally honest in your opinions,
someone who likes good quality, value for
money and willing to have a photo in Deal
Hound next to your opinion (we’ll take it from
your good side…honest!) So go on then, get
emailing me.
Birthday cakesBirthday cakes
Sainsburys This is magnifi cent giant cup cake. Really
looked the part, and looks more expensive
than £10 Madeira, raspberry jam and
buttercream fi lling. Loved it 8/108/10
Asda Traditional looking birthday cake again for £10.
Not quite as eye catching as it’s Sainsbury’s
counterpart but the taste was there still. 7/107/106

Marks and Spencer Traditional birthday cake, again Madeira cake
with raspberry jam and buttercream fi lling.
However this cake really tasted amazing and
we all absolutely loved it. There’s something
extra special about it 9/109/10
Morrisons Traditional cake only £5.49 Another Madeira
cake with buttercream and raspberry jam fi lling,
however the price of this one really made it
stand out. It didn’t have the wow factor in
looks but the taste was there and for the price
was fantastic value for money. 8/108/10
So get emailing today, and together we’ll bring
Doncaster the best value for money on the
planet!”

Mental Health Awareness Week,Cask Corner March 30 - April 5thThere’s many things we’re unsure of, the weather, England’s scoring ability or getting even one lottery number! Sadly there’s one thing we do know, this year one in four of us will suffer a mental health problem . The statistics are alarming; suicide is the most common cause of death in males under 35. Only one in ten prisoners has no mental disorder and Britain has the highest self-harm rates in Europe.
PledgePledgeWith huge numbers suffering such problems you’d think society would be empathetic, and accepting. Not so, and this results in many people feeling isolated, withdrawn and lonely. Well now Cask Corner has made a pledge to be proactive with a Mental Health Awareness Week from March 30th – April 5th. It was after a regular lost her life to suicide that Julie Buckley decided to take action, “We’re raising money and splitting it between Doncaster’s Mental Health Charities,” she told Deal Hound, “there’s music all week, comedy and more too, there’s a fantastic line up of artists wanting to help. But more importantly we have people here willing to listen too.”
DoncasterDoncasterMindMindJackie Lewis from Doncaster Mind is thrilled at Cask’s efforts and explains how
Mind gives support in many ways. This could be in the form of counselling, signposting to other organisations or giving practical help “Many people need help with money problems, confi dence building or just need social interaction ” she explained “people can come to us without an appointment, we have time for them and the resources to help them become mentally fi t. It is important people know they are not alone.”

Many people will say the 1984/5 miners’
strike was “before my time” They’re in an
environment where it’s perfectly normal
to suffer high unemployed, feel insecure
and sadly one where nothing much is
manufactured here anymore.
You see for those of us who witnessed the
miners’ strike fi rst hand, we understood that
this fi ght was not just about pit closures.
This strike was about saving communities;
communities which had stood the test of time
(iIndeed many could tell you about the 1926
strike and shame scabs).
Heritage
Our mining heritage became the victim of a
politician’s fi ght against the working classes.
From a solid start it would soon become
apparent that this strike was different. Many
recall Doncaster being overrun with police, but
strangely these wore the Met’s white shirts.
Some taunted, beat and arrested picketers,
good people who had never been in trouble
before. Then there was the BBC, how can we
forgive the disgraceful reverse action footage
from the Orgreave Coking Plant battle showing
miners’ displaying violent behaviour (when
in fact they were being attacked) the lack of
support from other unions and the general
undermining from most of the media , before
fi nally the Nottinghamshire miners hammering
their nail in the coffi n.
Today
Margaret Thatcher won. The miners went back
to work 30 years ago and the working classes
of today are now vulnerable. Workers are
faced with long hours, short contracts, diluted
rights, zero hour contracts and pitifully low
wages. These last 30 years have seen huge
strides backwards to where Draconian bosses
can rule over their minions mercilessly. Our
communities have suffered but we refuse to let
this sad anniversary go without honouring it.
We must never forget what happened because
this is our history, and our future can learn a lot
from it. Let’s hope one day a REAL investigation
will be undertaken and justice served.

The 70th Anniversary of VE Day marks the day the armed forces of Nazi Germany unconditionally surrendered and the destruction of the Third Reich. Street parties ensued and people celebrated the end of history’s bloodiest war. The Nazi’s sent 11 million people directly to their deaths, these included 6 million Jews as well as Christians, Gypsies, homosexuals, disabled, black people, Poles, Communists and Soviet POW’s. To put this into context this is the equivalent of the entire population of London, Sheffi eld, Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester. The generations to come will no doubt look at these numbers in wonderment and try to imagine how this could possibly have happened. However the total number of deaths for WW2 is around 60 million in confl ict and 80 million including famine. We can only imagine the fear our brave people and armed forces lived with every single day. This occasion is extremely important, because this is likely the last signifi cant anniversary that those who fought in it will assemble in numbers, so that the younger generations can give thanks. And our opportunity to do just that is the eighth of May. As the sun goes down, 100 beacons will be lit throughout the UK. Doncaster has been chosen to be part of
this poignant tribute, and at time of going to press, it is expected to be either the Cenotaph or the Mansion House.
We would like to thank the people that lived through these terrifying times, those that lost loved ones, those that were displaced, those brave women who worked tirelessly in munitions factories and the 80,000 who joined the land army, those that kept families together, and our amazing armed forces many of whom suffered horrendous injuries and mental anguish. We have to ask ourselves, without this magnifi cent combined effort, what condition would the world be In today?

If you like live music then check out some of Doncaster’s vibrant town centre pubs. This issue we’re at the Horse and Groom for their Help for Heroes night on April 25th. There’s a terrifi c line up from the afternoon continuing into the night. The bands are donating any fees to the charity to kick off the fund raising, so you can enjoy a great night and drop a couple of pounds in the buckets yourself.Proud to be there are One Night Stand who formed especially for last year’s Help for Heroes night. As the name suggests it was supposed to be their only gig, however the bookings came fl ooding in and so a year on they’re still going strong. We caught up with One Night Stand’s Andy May, and asked him about the band and his thoughts on Doncaster’s live music scene.
Tell us about the band’s background, Andy.We just got together to raise money for Help for Heroes really. I’d been teaching my son Rick to play guitar and found out he could really sing.
What do you think of Doncaster’s music scene? There’s some great talent, but Doncaster has been turning out talent for years. I remember seeing John Parr and he was excellent, it was after that I took up the guitar and got involved with music.
Favourite place to perform? We like Horse and Groom, Cask and The Leopard.
Which songs do you sing to get the crowd going? They especially like Dakota (Stereophonics) , Place Your Hands (Reef) and the Resurrection Shuffl e (Ashton, Gardener and Dyke).
So what genre are One Night Stand?Indie Rock, things like Jam, Oasis, Artic Monkey’s, Stones, The Who and Primal Scream.
What are your future plans? We’ve done one festival and we’d like to do more. I’d like to to do a Beer Festival too celebrating our Yorkshire 200+ micro breweries.
Why do You do This, music’s hard work isn’t it?It’s the buzz. Seeing people dancing and enjoying our music.
Any Advice for Newcomers?Do your homework, learn your trade by watching the bands. When you play make sure it’s what the audience wants to hear, but most of all, just get out there and enjoy yourself.
Thanks Andy, we’ll see you at Horse and Groom on April 25th for their Help for Heroes Night. (See the gig guide - P20)
