1. FellowshipOverviewThisprogram,administeredbytheMinneapolisCollegeofArtandDesign(MCAD),ismadepossiblebythegeneroussupportoftheJeromeFoundation.Thegoalofthisfellowshipprogramistosignificantlyadvance,artisticallyandcritically,earlycareervisualartistsinMinnesota.Artistsconsideredforthisfellowshipmayworkinavarietyofvisualartmedia,includingbothtraditionalandnewmedia.TheJeromeFoundationhasadoptednewlanguageandguidelinessurroundingthedefinitionofanearlycareer/emergingartist.Thenewemphasisisonfundingartistsatarelativelyearlyandstillformativestageinhopesofprovidingthem“footing”withintheirrespectivefields.Tothisend,theJeromeFoundationdoesnotsupportartistswhoalreadyhaveafullydeveloped/matureartistic“voice”inanydisciplineorthosewhohavealreadybeensubstantiallycelebratedwithintheirfield,themedia,fundingcirclesorthepublicatlargeinanydiscipline,includingbutnotlimitedtothedisciplineforwhichsupportisrequested.Thefocusisoncareerachievementandrecognition.Thisprogramdeterminesearlycareer/emergingstatusbasedonthetotalityofanartisticcareer,notontheachievementwithinasinglediscipline.Awell-establishedcomposer,forexample,whodecidestobegincreatingsculpture,isnotconsideredanearlycareer/emergingartistandthereforeisineligibletoapplytoJeromeforsupportinanyprogram;suchanartistwouldnotbeconsideredanemergingvisualartistforthepurposesofJeromeFoundationeligibility.TheMCAD-administeredfellowshipprogramusesanindependentjuryofthreeartsprofessionalstocompetitivelyawardfourfellowships.ThefellowshiprunsfromNovember30,2019–November30,2020andincludes:
• $10,000–Thefundsmaybeusedtopurchasematerials,coverproductioncostsofartwork,andtosupplementlivingortravelcosts.Awardsaresubjecttostateandfederalincometaxguidelines.
• Threestudiovisitsfromprofessionalcritics(2local,Inational).• AnexhibitionattheMCADGalleryinFall2020.• Acatalogwithacriticalessayoneachartist’swork.• Theopportunitytopartakeinapublicpaneldiscussion.• AccesstoMCAD’sfacilities,library,and½offtuitionforContinuingEducationcourses.

AbouttheJeromeFoundationTheJeromeFoundation,createdbyartistandphilanthropistJeromeHill(1905–1972),promotesadynamicculturethroughsupportforearlycareer/emergingvocationalartiststocreatenewworkandfornonprofitartsorganizationsthatofferprograms,servicesandactivitiesforsuchartistsbasedinthestateofMinnesotaorthefiveboroughsofNewYorkCity.

TheFoundation’scorevalues,whichwestrivetomodelinourpracticeasgrantmakersandtosupportinourgrantees,are:Diversity:Weconsciouslyembracediversityinthebroadestsense.Wesupportadiverserangeofartistsandorganizations,includingbutnotlimitedtothoseofdiversecultures,races,sexualidentities,genders,generations,aesthetics,pointsofview,physicalabilities,andmissions.Wesupportadiverserangeofartisticdisciplinesandforms,createdinavarietyofcontextsandfordifferentaudiences.Innovation/Risk:Wesupportartistswhoandorganizationsthatpushtheboundariesoftheirrespectivedisciplines,andweapplaudunconventionalapproachestosolvingproblems.Humility:Weworkforartists(ratherthanthereverse)andbelievethatartistsandorganizationsarethebestauthoritiestodefinetheirneedsandchallenges—anessentialhumilityreflectiveofJeromeHill,ourfounder.Theartistswesupportembracetheirrolesaspartofalargercommunityofartistsandcitizens,andconsciouslyworkwithasenseofpurpose,whetheraesthetic,socialorboth.
3.EligibilityRequirementsPleasereadcarefully.Applicantswhodonotmeetallofthefollowingcriteriaandexpectationswillnotbeconsideredandshouldnotapply.
• Artistswhoseetheartsasanongoingvocation,ratherthanasahobby,pastimeoroccasionalpursuit;andwhohavealreadycompletedtheirtraining,iftheyhavedecidedtopursueformaltrainingatall;
• Artistswhoatthetimeofapplicationhavegenerated,completedandpubliclypresented/exhibited/publishedworkinthedisciplineinwhichsupportisrequested;
• Artistswhoseprimarygoalistogeneratenewworks,asopposedtoremountingorre-interpretingexistingworks;
• Artistswhoengageinexploringandchallengingconventionalartisticforms;• Artistswhoareintheearlystagesoftheircareers;• Artistswhohaveafocuseddirectionandgoals,evenwhilestilldevelopingtheirartistic
“voice”;• Artistswhohaveyettobesubstantiallycelebratedwithintheirfield,themedia,
fundingcirclesorthepublicatlarge;• ArtistswhoarelegalresidentsofthestateofMinnesotaandhavebeenresidentsfora
leastayearprior(sinceSeptember20,2018)tothesubmissionofanapplication.(Determinedbyvotingand/orpaymentoftaxesinthestate.ApplicantmustalsohaveastreetmailingaddresswithinMinnesotatobeeligibletoapply.)
• Artists’workmustfallwithincurrentvisualartpractice.ArtistsconsideredforthisFellowshipmayworkinavarietyofvisualartmedia,includingbothtraditionalandnewmedia.TheFellowshipisnotintendedforcommercialartists,musicians,theatreartists,orotherswhoseworkisgenerallynotpresentedinavisualartcontext.
• Artistsmustresideinthestateuntiltheendofthe12-monthFellowshipperiod.

• Artistsmustbeabletoprovideevidencethattheyareanearlycareerartist.Yourresumewilldemonstratelimited,butpromising,exhibitionexposureandnomorethanafewgrantsorfellowshipsindirectsupportofyourwork.
• ArtistslivingoutsidetheTwinCitiesmetropolitanareawhoreceiveaMCAD-JeromeFoundationFellowshipmustbewillingtotraveltotheTwinCitiesforFellowshipevents,meetingswithvisitingcriticsandothergroupmeetings.Mileageandlodgingfortripswillbereimbursed.
• ArtistsmustbewillingtomeetwithvisitingcriticsduringtheFellowshipperiodandaccommodatetheirschedulestothecritics'visits.ThismayincludearrangingforandtransportingyourartworktoalocationintheTwinCitiesforstudiovisits.
• ArtistsmustbewillingtoparticipateinaFellowshipexhibitionandrelatedactivities.• ArtistsareeligibletoreceivethisFellowshiponceeverythreeyears;however,ifyouare
apriorrecipientthatfactwillbetakenintoconsiderationwhenyourapplicationisreviewed.
• ArtistswhohavebeenawardedaMcKnightVisualArtistFellowshiporMcKnightPhotographyFellowship(formid-careerartists)arenoteligiblefortheMCAD-JeromeEarlyCareerArtistFellowship.
JeromeFoundationdoesNOTsupport
• Studentswhoareorwillbeatthetimeofapplicationandduringthegrantperiodenrolledindegree-grantingprograms(includingK-12,college,graduateorpostgraduatestudies);
• Artistswhoareengagedintheartsasahobbyoravocationalpastime;• Artistswhointerpret,perform,editordesigntheworkofothers(e.g.singers,dancers,
actors,musicians,editors,journalists,designersinsets/lights/costumes/sound,editors,arrangers)butwhodonotalsohaveasignificanthistoryofgeneratingnewworkinaccordancewithguidelines;
• Managers,administrators,buildersortechnicianswhodonotalsohaveasignificanthistoryofgeneratingnewworkinaccordancewithguidelines;
• Artistswhodonotengageinexploringandchallengingconventionalartisticforms;• ArtistswhodonotcurrentlyliveinthestateofMinnesotaandwhodidnotconsiderMN
theirlegalresidencefortheyearleadinguptotheapplication.• Giventheemphasisonfundingartistsatarelativelyearlyandstillformativestagein
hopesofprovidingthem“footing”withintheirrespectivefields,theJeromeFoundationadditionallydoesnotsupportartistswhohavealreadybeensubstantiallycelebratedwithintheirfield,themedia,fundingcirclesorthepublicatlargeinanydiscipline,includingbutnotlimitedtothedisciplineforwhichsupportisrequested.Thisprogramdeterminesearlycareer/emergingstatusbasedonthetotalityofanartisticcareer,notontheachievementwithinasinglediscipline.Awell-establishedcomposer,forexample,whodecidestobegincreatingsculpture,isnotconsideredanearlycareer/emergingartistandthereforeisineligibletoapplytoJeromeforsupport;suchanartistwouldnotbeconsideredanearlycareer/emergingvisualartistforthepurposesofJeromeFoundationeligibility.

4.ApplicationSelectionandProcessSelection:Threejurors,onewhoisfamiliarwiththevisualartsinMinnesotaandtwowhoarenot,selectthefellows.Thesepanelistsareartists,curators,artcritics,andeducatorswithanappreciationforandknowledgeofawidespectrumofcontemporaryartpractices.Panelists,insofaraspossible,representadiversityofage,ethnicity,gender,andgeography.Thepanelistsremainanonymousduringtheselectionprocess.Thenamesarerevealedoncethefellowshiprecipientsareannounced.MCADfellowshipstaffdoesnotparticipateinanypartoftheselectionprocess.Process:ReviewProcess:Applicantsareevaluatedandselectedaccordingtothesecriteria:
• artisticexcellence;• evidenceofseriouscommitmenttotheirpractice;• theimpactthefellowshipwillhaveontheartist.
ThepanelwillalsobeaskedtoconsiderthebreadthofartisticpracticeamongMinnesotaartists,whichcanincludeawiderangeofaestheticsandtraditionsthatmightbeinfluencedbyethnicity,gender,and/orgeography.FirstRound:Thejurorsreviewallsubmissionsintheformofdigitalimagesviewedontheirpersonalcomputermonitors.Theyareaskedtoscoreeachapplicant1to5.Theirdecisionsaretabulatedandthetop25-30applicantswiththehighestnumericalscoremoveontothenextsemifinalround.SecondRound:Thejurorsareaskedreviewforasecondtimetheapplicationsofthesemifinalistsandprovidesomewrittencomments.Thenaconferencecallisheldwherethepanelistsdiscussthesetop25-30applicants.Those10applicantsreceivingthegreatestinterestwillbecontactedtoschedulestudiovisits.EmailnotificationwillbesenttoallapplicantsonMonday,November4.Oneemailwillbesenttoapplicantswhodidnotmakeittothesecondround.Aseparateemailwillbesenttoapplicantswhoweresemifinalists,lettingthemknowthatapplicantsmakingittothesecondandfinalroundscancontacttheProgramOfficetosetupatimetodiscussthejurors’comments.ThesephoneconversationswillhappenaftertheannouncementofthefourFellows(i.e.,afterMonday,November25,2019.)StudioVisitsforFinalists:Inthisfinalphase,theProgramOfficenotifiesthe10artistsidentifiedforfinalreviewnolaterthanMonday,November4.Appointmentsaremadeforbrief,20-

minutestudiovisitswiththejury.ThedatesforthestudiovisitswillbeSaturday,November16andSunday,November17.TheProgramDirectorwillhelpanyfinalistswhosestudioisoutsidetheTwinCitieslocateaspacetopresenttheirworktothejury.Notification:Uponcompletionofthestudiovisits,theProgramDirectorwillcallthefourFellowsandemailtheotherfinalistsoftheresults.TheProgramOfficewillnotifyallapplicantsaboutthejuror’sfinaldecisionviaemailnolaterthanMonday,November25.Pleasedonotcallforresults.
