Collection of short stories : Examples“The Minister’s Black Veil”

The minister accidently killed a friend. He wore a black veil never to reveal his face again.The black veil was to hide his shame of his secret sin.

“The Gentle Boy”The Quaker father was put to death because of

different religious believes.The Quaker boy is taken in by a Puritan family only

at the end to experience the same faith.The persecutors do not realize their own sins of

murder.

The house in the story seems to be haunted by the guilt of the founder and the ghost of his victim.The founder: Colonel Pyncheon denounced

another character in order to get his property.The Victim: Matthew Maule

The sin of Colonel Pyncheon shown through his portrait and a curtain was placed over it.The curtain was place over the portrait in

order to hide from the sin of the owner’s ancestor (Colonel Pyncheon).

This story portrayed feelings of guilt and compassion when Hawthorne addressed the nature of sin and sorrow.

Hester PrynneUnmarried mother forced to wear a scarlet letter “A” upon

her chess for adultery while refusing to identify her lover.Other Secrets

Roger Chillingworth (Hester’s Husband)Thought to be lost at sea.He was alive and well and practicing medicine in the same town.

Minister DimmesdaleAs Hester ‘s secret lover the shame has made him weaker and

ridden with guilt. He dies by his own tortured heart.

He tested the relationship with imagination and society.

His writings belong to dark romanticism which are suggestive of evil, sin, and guilt displayed in all of his themes.

His work illustrates that the burden of the past involves guilt. However, only by understanding the past can the present know its future.
