Greetings fellow Bridge players and friends, Congratulations to the Mini-McKenney and Ace of Clubs winners honored at our February 18 Unit Swiss Team Game and Awards event. You’ll see their names in this month’s newsletter and many of their pictures in a special photo album. Congratulations to our Tournament Director and Folsom Bridge Center Director, David Willmott who was honored with a District 21 Goodwill Award this month! A well deserved honor for all he’s done for us in Unit 505. Last but not least, best wishes to Al Beckner as he retires—although I hear he intends to continue playing bridge so we will see him around the tables. Our NLM Sectional was a success. Thank you to all who came out to enjoy the opportunity to receive extra points and good food! We also have a special photo album from the NLM Sectional! Whew! A busy month to be sure. But we’re not done . . . Plan now to attend our Spring Sectional May 4-6—we’ll be back at ORANGEVALE COMMUNITY CENTER. We need your attendance to help support our Sectionals. With everyone attending we will be able to continue holding the 3 day events which we all enjoy. Watch for a new Directory coming this summer. It will be available on-line with hard copies only at the clubs for use by anyone without a computer. Watch for more details to follow. Don’t forget—our next Unit Game will be on March 11 at FOLSOM! See flyers for both the Spring Sectional and the March Unit Game in this newsletter. Have a great month, Katherine

There can be three answers to a bidding question and they can all be right. . .
by Clark Muldavin
For over 50 years, The Bridge World (BW) has a monthly feature of asking experts different bidding problems. In the November 2016 issue, on problem E, the 24 experts voted, a rare eight votes for three different bids.
Bidding at matchpoints (MP) was: Opener Responder 1D 1H 2C ?
With A1053-10632-A-K1065 what should responder’s second bid be? Problem stipulated that 2S is the only game force (GF).
Shown below are the three selected bids of 2S, 2NT and 3C, with one of the eight experts who voted for the choice and a short comment on why.
2S- (8 votes including Zia). Don’t avoid GF and helps find best strain for game.
2NT- (8 votes including Robert Wolff). One slipped trick is common against NT contracts (starting with the lead) that can lead to a lot of matchpoints for the declarer.
3C- (8 votes including Kit Woolsey). Go for the sure plus at matchpoints

The SCLH duplicate bridge club is an invitational club with games open to residents of Sun City and their invited guests. Our games are played in the Kilaga Springs Lodge on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m., (includes a 199er section), Fridays at 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays at 12:30 p.m. (includes a 299er section). Our game table fees for non-members who are invited guests are $5.00. For additional information about our club, please visit the club web-site: www.bridgewebs.com/lincolnhills. Our weekly games are dependent on our amazing volunteers who faithfully show up every week,
year in and year out. We all know that we only have 52 weeks in a year. We also all know that we only have 52 cards in a deck. What we all may not know is that we have many more than 52 fun filled days of duplicate bridge play and parties lined up for our Club. Meet Elsie Bekowsky. Elsie is on the left enjoying a few minutes of leisure by the fireplace with her regular partner Joyce Barry and friend, Vince Marek. Elsie is in charge of Table Setup. Twice a week, Elsie and her committee come to the game before the rest of us and set up tables. This sounds so simple, but we have a minimum of 30 tables on Wednesdays. Saturdays we have no less than 20 tables. Our membership has the luxury of arriving
with a room ready to play, thanks to Elsie and her committee. We also have a very special volunteer and Board member, Kay Kerenyi. Kay, on the right, and her committee have special gifts and talents that make our parties beautiful with their decorating and planning. Our mem-bership is always surprised at the ideas they put into action when it comes to our social events. I was lucky
enough to get a picture of Kay with one of her partners and a former Board member, Dede Ranahan.

SWISS TEAM GAMES Bridge Works will be hosting two Swiss Team Games during 2018, the first on Tuesday, April 10th. Please start forming your teams for a special day of bridge! Entries are to be submitted NO LATER than Tuesday, April 3rd. The day will begin with a lunch PROVIDED by Bridge Works at 11 am, along with the usual snacks and beverage. Swiss Team games usually require slightly more playing time, so we would hope to get the actual game started by 11:30 am. The game will have three stratified sections based on the total aver-age MPS of the four players as follows; A = 4000+ MPS, B = 1000 - 3999 MPS and C = 0 - 999 MPS. Hopefully, each stratification will only participate against other teams within their respective groups!
So what about the Bucks ($$$$)? In addition to lunch and bridge, Bridge Works will reward the winning team members, in each stratification, free play certificates to any future game of their choice. Imagine having all this for a very nominal entree fee of $10 per player! Should any pair be in need of partners, or for further information, please contact Joe Blackford at <bridgeworks16@gmail.com>.

There are 2 Barbara Wheelers in ACBL Unit 505.
Barbara R. Wheeler, on the right, won the Ace of Clubs Award for 2017 for the 500-1000 MP range. So, Barbara R. made her first visit to the new Sacramento Bridge Center (SBC) for the Unit Team Game and Awards on Sun. Feb. 18, 2018.
Barbara R. recalls that a few years ago, when she checked into the tournament hotel in Monterey, she was told that she was already checked in. (Barbara C. had already checked in.) Barbara C. received phone calls for Barbara R. When Barbara C. played at Granite Springs for the first time in October, she was told that she was not Barbara Wheeler.
The two Barbara Wheelers played together once about a year and a half ago at Folsom Bridge Club.
Who knew there’s room for 2 Barbara Wheelers in Unit 505! We love you both!
