Waste management

Updating your perceptions

Materials recovery and recycling is high on the priority list of waste management strategies, certainly higher than incineration or land filling, which often meet public resistance.

The Keppel Seghers DANO Drum is ideally suited to precondition waste before final treatment.

Updating your perceptions

It allows a maximum recovery of recyclable materials, an ideal pretreatment of the organic fraction prior to biological treatment and at the same time produces an excellent RDF type of fuel.

Updating your perceptions

Waste is a heterogeneous mixture of different solid products such as paper, plastics, cardboard, metals, food waste, etc. The composition varies widely according to many parameters:

• Origin (households, industry,…) • Region or country • Living standards and habits • Time of the year (winter, summer, rainy season) • Waste collection method (bags, open containers.)

Waste disposal becomes a top priority for many local governments.

Updating your perceptions

In most countries the waste management strategy is a delicate mixture of ecological and economical interests and is based on the following principles, in decreasing order of priority:

• 1. Waste prevention • 2. Recycling into usable materials • 3. Composting• 4. Landfilling • 5. Energy recovery in Waste-to-Energy plants

What is waste?

• Technical: a product not longer wanted by its producerNote: it can still be a valuable raw material to others!

• Economical: a product for which one has to pay to dispose of

• Legal: “each matter or object of which the owner wants , plans or has to dispose of”

• Different categories of “waste” according to source, physical & chemical composition, size, …

Seghers Dano Drum

The core of a waste pre-treatment installation is the SEGHERS Dano Drum for waste conditioning.

The drum is a horizontally mounted, rotating

steel cylinder which automatically shreds, mixes, conditions and sorts the refuse into components for either recycling, composting, or incineration with energy recovery.

The Keppel Seghers DANO Drum Mark III has a length of about 79 ft and an internal diameter of 12.5 ft. An integrated screen is attached to the end of the drum.

– Earlier Stabilization Period

– Improved Commercial Exploitation

Bulk Reduction - Benefits

Principle & Process Implementation

The rotation of the drum imparts a tumbling action to its contents, which leads to a breakdown of the softer components by particle collision and attrition as they repeatedly contact the drum wall and harder elements in the mixture.

Principle & Process Implementation

The DANO system was originally designed as an aerobic composting system for municipal waste, either alone or in a co-composting process with sewage sludge.

Principle & Process Implementation This diagram shows the possibilities of mixing different wastes at the input of the Keppel Seghers DANO Drum

system, as well as the different possibilities for the outlet streams:

Landfill

• Soil Improvement and Cover Material for Landfill

– No Need for Importing Cover Material

– Immediate Saving

– More hygiene and less vector attraction

Landfill waste pretreatment

• Readily available RDF fluff and organic waste

streams

• Most of the metal fraction concentrated in DANO

DRUM “metal rich” fraction

• Fine material is fibrous and solid (not “pulped”)

resulting in good handling properties

• Simple, reliable system with low maintenance

Materials Recovery - Benefits

• attrition of paper and cardboard increases biogas

production for anaerobic digestion

• relatively low contamination of organic waste stream

• increased digestion feed rate from same amount of

Municipal Solid Waste with high-organic stream

• good material handling properties (fibrous material)

• reduced particle size and homogeneous

Biological treatment - advantages

Protection and Reliability

A number of triangular shaped projections are fitted in the Keppel Seghers DANO Drum to help prevent the formation of bundles of textiles.

Protection and Reliability

In order to protect the drum from wear, Keppel Seghers DANO Drum uses a system which causes pulverized elements in the refuse to form a deep lining around the total internal periphery of the drum. This completely protects the cylinder shell and has proved to be extremely successful in ensuring, with minimum maintenance, a virtually everlasting life for the drum.

Unique and Different

The flexible process implementation allows for a change in secondary resource markets and values.

It also copes with future policy changes due to public appreciation and the evolution of final treatment technologies.

This is not only a major advantage, it is also a necessity when considering the long lifetime of a Keppel Seghers DANO Drum.

• Energy Recovery Out of pulverized MSW:

– More homogeneous than non-treated waste

– Leading to higher efficiency and throughput, and

better plant control

• Energy Recovery Out of RDF fraction

– High calorific value

– More homogeneous than non-treated waste

– Potentially better burnout

Feedstock for EfW Installations

• Smoother Operation and More Stable Steam

Flow

• Easier Operation and Automation of the Plant

• Automatic Feeding of the Waste is possible

• Higher design throughput of waste

• Higher Public Acceptance
