Getting started:

On Windows XP systems, this disc should run automatically when it is put into your DVD-ROM drive.

On some Windows XP systems and on Windows Vista, the program needs to be started as follows: find the “starthere” file on the root of the disc using Windows Explorer, and double-click on it.

English World map screen:

Click on a unit to be taken to the main teaching screen for that unit.

Click to be taken to the Unit by Unit menu screen.

Unit by Unit menu screen:From this screen you can access all elements of the DVD-ROM.The main part of the screen is divided into 12 units.

Click to access the main teaching elements for the unit. (See Unit screens notes.)

From within the teaching screens you can go back to the English World map screen by clicking the English World logo.

Click to access letter, number, word and other printable cards for the unit.Click to access all the audio files for the unit. Use the controls to play, pause and re-set the recording.

Click to access the unit song(s). Use the controls to play, pause and re-set the recording. Each song is also available as a karaoke track . Click the to close the Song window.

Click to access a unit by unit dictionary of words. Each word is written and illustrated. Click on either the word or the picture to hear an audio recording of each word. Click the to close the dictionary window.

Printables, audio files, songs and dictionary (see below) can also be accessed from within each teaching element by clicking the blue arrow on the top right.

Click to access all the audio files for the Welcome Unit. Use the controls to play, pause and re-set the recording. Click the to close the Welcome Unit audio files window.

Click to access teacher training videos. The videos show the poster, book and DVD materials being used in a classroom environment. Use the controls to play, pause, forward/rewind and re-set the video, or to increase the volume. Click the to close the Video window.

Click to access the English World test builder. Use the

controls to choose a prewritten test or create a new test.

To choose a prewritten test:

• Click ‘Choose a prewritten test’.

• Select a test from the list.

• Preview your test. Use the controls to change the order of the questions, or to add additional questions.

Click the on the top right hand side to close the test builder window.

To create a new test:

• Click ‘Create a test’.

• Type in a name for your test.

• Now add questions to your test. Questions can be added by unit, with additional questions on vocabulary and spelling, if selected. Alternatively, questions can be added by the grammar point to be tested. To select multiple questions based on grammar, if they are in sequence, click on the first one and the last one in the sequence holding the Shift key; if they are not in sequence, click on them holding the control key (Ctrl).

• Preview your test. Use the controls to change the order of the questions, or add additional questions.

• Click ‘Save test’ to to save your test. Clicking ‘Save test’ prompts you to save your test onto the desktop. Enter a name for your file and click Save. Your test will be saved to the desktop with a .tbxm extension. To preview or print your test again, open English World DVD-ROM and then the test builder. Click ‘Open saved test’ (third tab on the top), locate your test and click Open.

All tests can be printed without the answers, with the answers in place, or with the answers on a separate sheet.

Unit screens:

From this screen you can access all the main teaching elements for the unit.

Use the right-hand menu to access the Dictionary, Printables, Audio files and Song(s) for the unit. (See Unit by Unit menu screen notes.) New wordsThis screen shows the new words for the unit.

Speaking. At the top of the screen you will see the numbers 1, 2 and 3.

• Click to show the image only.

• Click to show the poster and to access the dialogue recording. Use the controls to play, pause and re-set the audio. Click on the speech bubble to reveal or conceal the words of the dialogue.

• Click . As for step 2 above, but the audio contains pauses in which pupils can repeat the dialogue.

Grammar. Use the controls to play the worked example. Click ‘Next’ to work through all the exercises based on this grammar point. If there is a second grammar point, click the at the top of the screen.

Conversation. Use the controls to play, pause and re-set the short Grammar in conversation video, or to increase the volume.

Class composition. Read the instructions on the left of the screen. The instructions can be concealed by pressing the arrow. Use the controls on the right to:

add writing in different colours

erase any added writing

Note: The controls must be concealed in order to access the next Class composition page. Press the arrow to conceal the controls.

Click ‘Next’ to access further Class composition pages.

Click to return to the Unit by Unit menu screen.
