The question is not where can it be used…

it is where CAN’T it be used!

and increase comfort (when properly sealed)

• Keeps water off the structural sheathing and framing

COMMON

INSTALLATION

MISTAKES FOR

VINYL SIDING

Steve Learman

Senior Product Application Specialist

• Always install over a smooth, flat surface

• Never install vinyl siding over open studs

• Vinyl Siding and Accessories must be able to move freely for

Expansion and Contraction

• Leave ¼” clearance in pockets and around all obstacles for

panels up to 12’ 6”

• Increase to 3/8” with temperatures below 40° F

• Install Fasteners in the center of nail slots

– 16” on Center for Siding

– 8” to 12” for Accessories

– 1 1/4” Penetration into a solid framing material such as wood

sheathing and studs

Basic Principles for Vinyl Siding and

Accessories

• DO NOT NAIL TIGHT! Always leave 1/8" to 1/16" between the nail

head and siding.

• Drive nails straight and level to prevent panel distortion

• Do not force panels up or down when fastening

• Overlap the factory notches 1" to 1-1/4"

• Hang vertical accessories from the top of the top nail slot

• Lap away from the highest traffic pattern

– Keep laps at least 3’ apart from course to course, and install three

courses between laps above each other

• Finish the last piece of siding into under sill trim, dual under sill

trim or cornice molding

• Do not face fasten or caulk vinyl siding and accessories

Basic Principles for Vinyl Siding and

Accessories

COMMON

FASTENING

MISTAKES

• Use only corrosion-resistant fasteners

– Stainless, aluminum or galvanized

– Nails, screws or staples

• Nails and staples

– Minimum length 1 ½”.

– Must be nailed into framing, 1 1/4” depth

– Nails- 1/8” shank, 5/16” head

– Staples- wide crown,16 gauge minimum

• Screws

– Flat or Truss Head

– 3 threads or ¼” in to metal studs

– Better holding power than nails

Fastener Choices

1/16”

– Measure from soffit to base of upper lock on previous

course of panels and subtract ¼”

– Mark this dimension on the panel to be cut, taking

measurement from bottom edge of panel

– Be sure to take several measurements along panel

– Use a straight edge to connect the points with a pencil,

then score along the line with a utility knife and snap

off the scrap

– Use snap lock punch to create tabs on outside face of

panel, 1/4" below cut edge, spacing tabs every 6"

Finish top of wall with J-channel and

Undersill or Dual Undersill trim

– Attach cornice receiver to the top of the wall under the

eave or soffit

– Trim the top panel to within 1/4" of the cornice receiver

– Using a nail slot punch, punch nail slots

• 1/4" from the trimmed edge of the siding panel

• 16" apart

– Fasten the top course

– Snap the cornice molding into the cornice receiver

Finish top of wall with Cornice Molding

• Corner Posts (less than 12’)

– Install 1/4" from the underside of the eave

– Extend 3/4" below starter strip

– Make sure the post is plumb and square

– Positioning first nail at the top of the first full nail slot

– Remaining nails install every 8" to 10“ in center of

slots

– Leave 1/8" to 1/16" between the nail head and

flange to allow for normal movement. (DO NOT

NAIL TIGHT.)

– Follow this nailing pattern on both nail flanges of

each post

Accessory Installation – Corner Posts

• Corner Posts (longer than 12’)

– Install 3/8" from underside of eave

– Extend bottom 3/4" below starter strip

– Before nailing, make sure post is plumb and

square

– Position nails at the top of the first two full nail

slots

– Finish installation using standard corner

installation instructions

Accessory Installation – Corner Posts

• Lapping Horizontal Panels

– 1”- 1 ¼” for panels up to 12’ 6”

– 1 ¼” – 1 ½” for panels longer than 12’ 6”

– Depends on temperature at time of install

• Duplicating a Factory Notch

– When cutting a panel to be used in an

overlap, duplicate the factory notch at the top

and bottom of the cut end

– Make sure the factory lap is on top

Overlapping Panels

Installing Horizontal Siding

• Leave a 1/4" gap between siding and

corner posts, 3/8" below 40° F

• 12’ panels only

• See chart on page 35 of Install

Manual for long length panels (Next

slide)

Installing Horizontal Siding

Page 35 Install Manual

• Fitting under windows

– Plan panel positioning so that a single panel extends

beyond both sides of a window opening

– Measure & cut panels

• Hold panel in place or measure from last panel

– Mark the width of the window opening

– Add ¼” to 3/8” to both ends

– Extend marks onto panel using square

• Use a scrap to create a template

– Lock template into lower panel of siding

– Mark ¼” below sill height

– Repeat on opposite side of window

• Transfer marks from template to panel

• Cut panel

– Tin snips, utility knife or circular saw

Installing Horizontal Siding

Siding Installation Around Fixtures

Utilize Fixture blocks or Begin new panel

• Attaching objects to siding

– Drill holes in the siding

• 1/4“ larger than the diameter of screws, bolts, or

nails being used to fasten objects

– Apply caulk around the screws.

– Do not fasten tightly

Installing Horizontal Panels

VISUAL

APPEARANCE

MISTAKES

• Framing can be Wood or Metal studs• Do not install vinyl siding over open studs• Always install over a smooth flat substrate

Wall Preparation

Structural Plywood or OSB Non Structural Foam board or

Fan fold – 1” max thickness

• Plan your wall out to avoid unsightly joint

patterns

– Separate joints by at least two courses

– Avoid joints above and below windows and doors

– Leave at least 3’ separating joints on successive

courses(3-6-9)

– Follow the planned pattern when applying the

next courses of siding

Installing Horizontal Siding

Installing Horizontal Siding• Installing the First Course

– Slide panel into corner, leaving room for

expansion into corners and J channels

– Hook bottom lock of panel into interlock bead of

starter

– Fasten properly in center of nail slots

• 16” O.C.

• Last nail 2-4” from end of panel

• 1 ¼” penetration into solid framing

– Make sure the panel can slide freely

• Install remaining courses by holding panel

up from bottom to ensure full lock

engagement

VERTICAL SIDING

MISTAKES

Installing Vertical Siding

• Wall panels

– Plan the panel layout

• Correctly installed vertical siding should have a

balanced appearance

– Equal number of panels to the right and left

– End-most panels would be of identical width

• To create this pleasing appearance:

– Divide the space to be covered by a partial panel

over both ends of a wall

• Expansion and contraction

– With vertical siding most of the expansion is

downward

– Leave more space at the bottom of the panel

• Allow for 1/3 of the total expansion at the top of a

panel and 2/3 of the total expansion at the bottom.
