What is Active Learning?

If I just told you, wouldn’t I be a hypocrite?

Ever hear of this?

High Tech High operates eleven schools in San Diego County: two elementary schools, four middle schools, and five high schools. All of these schools serve a diverse, lottery-selected student population; all embody the High Tech High design principles of personalization, adult world connection, common intellectual mission, and teacher as designer.

•99.5% of HTH's graduates have gone on to college, with approximately 70% attending four-year programs such as Johns Hopkins University, MIT, Stanford University, Olin College, Howard University, University of California at Berkeley, University of California at Los Angeles, New York University and Northwestern University.  •About 50-55% of HTH graduates are 1st generation college students.  •Over 30% of HTH alumni enter math or science fields (vs. 17% national rate)  •HTH’s African-American students outperform district and statewide peers by a wide margin vis-à-vis test scores. Percentage who take chemistry, physics, and advanced math (100%), and college entry (100%).

Taking the Lead: An Interview with Larry RosenstockHigh Tech High's founding principal and CEO speaks about its innovative teaching and learning model.

What do I do?• Include your students in the learning

process. • Punctuate lectures-deliver a series of

smaller lectures in place of one long lecture.Teaching cycle for Math 75 last summer. (93% pass rate)

• Inserted active learning techniques.• Students earn homework credit through

homework presentations.• Daily quiz after presentations.• Mini-lecture for next class’

homework/presentation/quiz cycle.• Lecture problems with students working

in groups with instructor as facilitator.

Words of Wisdom

•When I hear, I forget.

•When I hear and see, I remember a little.

•When I hear, see, and ask questions about it or discuss it, I begin to understand.

•When I hear, see, discuss, and do, I acquire knowledge and skill.

(Silberman, 1996)

Interesting Quotes I came across when preparing for this lounge …

•“Knowledge and Action are One” – Krishnananda

•“THERE can be no doubt that all our knowledge begins with experience.” - Kant

•“Knowledge begins as an action”- Piaget

•“There is only one thing more painful than learning from experience and that is not learning from experience”- Archibald MacLeish
