TIMBER BAMBOO

Key Education Beliefs

1. Whole Student Approach•MAPS (added recess)

2. Culture Trumps Strategy• Students will remember how you made them feel•Be “That One Teacher” • Education is hard but not complicated

3. We have to define Success

3 Components to Creating a Culture where All Students Succeed

ALMOST THERE!!

CULTURE MATTERS

“How much hope and optimism your kids feel at school is more important than their IQ.”

DMV Policy

At Disney World when it rains…..

WHAT IS SUCCESS?

✓INSPIRING Students to reach their Maximum Potential

It is more than their ability to pass a test and move to the next grade.

✓GIVING students the tools to pursue their dreamsWhat are we preparing them for?

✓DEVELOPING their MORAL CHARACTERIntegrity, Kindness, Loyalty, Serving Others

To create a culture where every student succeeds

1. Be Positive

2. Be Professional

3. Challenge with Support

1. Being Positive

•Starts with Enthusiasm and Caring •You have to Know your students•Smile and Laugh - It’s Okay!•Expect Every Student To Succeed•Give students a Fresh Start each day

DO PEOPLE SMILE WHEN YOU ENTER THE ROOM?

OR WHEN YOU LEAVE?

Positive is Powerful

▪Positive people live longer and are more resilient facing stress.▪Academic Grit

▪The Brain in Positive Mode is 31% more productive.▪Intelligence, Creativity, and Energy Levels Increase

“Too often we underestimate the power of a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”Leo Buscaglia

You have to be intentional to create a Positive Environment daily

FOCUS UP

2. Be Professional

▪We are our own worst enemy▪Dress, speech, body language. ▪Every Interaction

▪Be prepared for every minute of every class▪Work to Master your Craft.▪Is the Teaching Profession better because of you?

Being PROFESSIONAL

Model:•Respect for everyone by everyone.•Self-Control•What are you putting on Social Media?

•How do you resolve conflict?•Never Yell, Argue, or use Sarcasm

3. Challenge with Support

•Challenging students means we demand their very best.

•Message sent is you believe in them

• Too much Average in this world.

MEDIOCRITY SUCKS

Beware the lollipop of mediocrity. Lick it once and

you will suck forever.

Challenging Students

•Students will achieve more than they thought was possible.

•Students will learn to Value the Struggle

•Develops Academic Grit

We have to give them a chance➢Be a Door, not a Wall“My teacher thought I was smart so I was”

➢The Key is Support** Advanced Placement **

If we expect students to embrace rigorous work then we have to

support them through the challenges.

What does that Support look like?

•Early Success, Small Wins•Tutoring•Re-teaching •Alternative Assignments•2nd Chances? (Driver’s License Test)

:

•Be Positive •Smile•Focus Up

•Be Professional•Master your Craft•Model Professionalism

•Challenge with Support•Be a Door

7 Things that matter most to Students

1. Greet me each day = you care

2. Smile = let me see happiness in someone.

3. Give me your attention – even if it is just for a second.

4. Dream with me - about things I might be able to do, not just what I need to do now.

5. Challenge me to be my very best - then teach me how

6. Demand of me = you believe in me.

7. Trust me = give me the chance to prove myself

(Be a Door, not a Wall)

Big Levers of Education

▪ENERGY VAMPIRES•Negativity•Getting stuck in the weeds

(Stick Balancing Activity)• Failure

There is power in knowing our students’ DNA (dreams, needs and abilities).

Never fight a battle in which nothing positive is accomplished by a victory.

A 1997 study found that early teacher-child relationships at the start of elementary school determined how kids felt about school and performed academically. A 2004 study found higher academic performance for middle school students who participated in an elementary school program to foster relationships. And a May 2018 study found that when teachers are antagonistic, college students learn less.

Mission

•Inspire a Love for Learning•Reading is Critical

•Character Development•Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.

Big Levers of Education

3. Standards of Excellence• Excellence by Everyone

4. Students Have to experience Success• Early Grades•Music, Art, Theater•PE, Clubs, Sports, Robotics

OUR WORK MATTERS

STUDENTS NEED US MORE TODAY THAN EVER!

• School is a safe place for students to go and work on becoming their best without distractions.

SCHOOL HAS TO BE A PLACE STUDENTS WANT TO GO:

POSITIVE, SAFE, FUN, CARING, CHALLENGING

Enthusiasm and Caring

•How do you make them feel•Do you expect effort without giving any•Heads Up and High Fives•Challenging them means you believe in them

SUPPORT

SELF-CONTROL•10:90 Rule - Attitude•Conflict Resolution•Treat others like you WANT to be treated

5) Develop the Moral Character of Students

Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.

• Honesty, Kindness

• Respect for Everyone by Everyone

• Service to Others• When you fill the cup of others you warm the hearts of two

people, yours and theirs. #inspire

• Strong Work Ethic

• No Excuses
