PROJECT NAME : EDUCATION CENTER FOR TRIBAL CHILDREN –IGATPURI BY ASEEMA CHARITABLE TRUST
EVERY CHILD HAS A RIGHT TO EDUCATION
STEWARD : VIDYA KUDLINGAR
ASEEMA BACKGROUND
• Aseema Charitable Trust is a Mumbai based NGO with a mission to equip children
from marginalized communities with high quality, value based education enabling
development of their limitless potential.
• Over the past 19 years, Aseema has worked extensively with children living in slum
communities in Mumbai and remote tribal communities in Igatpuri.
EVERY CHILD HAS A RIGHT TO EDUCATION
ASEEMA PROJECTS
• In Mumbai, Aseema has adopted the English medium sections of the Pali
Chimbai Municipal School, Santacruz (W) Municipal School and Kherwadi
Municipal School. In each of these schools, Aseema supports the MCGM by
providing teachers who are oriented to Aseema’s child friendly approach,
making the learning environment stimulating and safe and creating a culture
that respects the child and promotes learning.
• In Igatpuri (Maharashtra), Aseema has set up an Education Centre for Tribal
Children in the remote village of Awalkheda. The Centre currently has a Pre
Primary Section and reaches out to children from the village and eleven
neighboring hamlets.
EVERY CHILD HAS A RIGHT TO EDUCATION
IGATPURI PROJECT BACKGROUND
EVERY CHILD HAS A RIGHT TO EDUCATION
- Awalkheda is a tribal village in Igatpuri. It is surrounded by eleven smaller hamlets.
- Families struggle for their daily existence.
- 45% of the population here is below 18 years of age. In spite of such a large child
population, many wadis or hamlets have no provision for education and those that do, lack in
basic amenities.
- Older children have to walk for about an hour each day simply to get to school and
motivation to continue studying is very low.
- There are no medical facilities in the village or wadis. Large families have led to
malnourishment of children, poor health of women and scarcity of resources for the family.
Below were the results of the survey conducted by Aseema in 2011
• 35.9% of the population consisted of children between the ages of 3 to 17 years
• 65% of the people face extreme deprivation & insecurity
• 2.6% reach higher secondary level
• 79% drop out of school – don’t find school interesting, schools are not easily accessible,
financial constraints, need to work at home.
IGATPURI PROJECT CONTINUED
• The urgency of the need for quality education and the potential of
this region drove Aseema to set up an Education Centre for Tribal
Children here
• First phase of construction for education center was completed in
March 2011. Aseema runs two anganwadis (Pre-Primary centres) and
is expanding this centre for older children as well.
• In the year 2015, Aseema commenced construction of the second
phase of this project which will include the Primary and Secondary
Classes, Indoor and Outdoor Sports Facilities, Counselling Room,
Medical Room, Kitchen and Dining Room as well as Vocational
Training facilities. Construction is near to completion, this Centre will
offer holistic learning to children from 2.5 to 17 years of age and
reach out to about 500 children annually.

SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION
• Aseema is well established and well managed NGO, doing very good job in
providing high quality education to children from marginalized community
• Target is to support 500 children annually through education center in Igatpuri
• Last year’s site visit report is positive.
• Based on all the information available through their progress report, Aseema’s
website and our archival site, its evident that they are very focused and doing great
job in child education hence recommending to fund them this year too.
• Having said that I agree with last year’s recommendation about funding Aseema
partially as they have huge corporate and individual donors. We can fund 50% for
their pre-primary fund request (600672 INR , $9385)

Thanks !
Questions ?
EVERY CHILD HAS A RIGHT TO EDUCATION
1. You mentioned HDFC as a probable donor for the meals program for year 2017-2018. Is that finalized ? Is HDFC going to be sponsor-or for the meals ? The sponsorship for the meal programme by HDFC has been finalized for the year 2017-18. 2. What is the impact on the project if Asha decide to fund partially for Prithvi pre-primary class expenses ? Are there other donors you are looking at ? 45 children will be equipped with basic skills such as pre- language skills, reading readiness, writing readiness, motor development and social skills required to begin formal schooling. It would help us greatly to have the funding for the entire class as it become difficult to raise the balance as most donors prefer to fund entire classes. 3. On the cost break up sheet for Prithvi pre-primary class running expenses, you mentioned three helpers and four gardeners. Honorarium to Class Teachers (2 Teachers) 368,273Honorarium to Sports Teachers (2 Teachers) 22,584Honorarium to Head Teacher 18,241Honorarium to School Admins (2 Admins) 34,744Honorarium to Helpers (3 Helpers) 142,477Honorarium to Kitchen Staff (8 Staff) 77,649
Honorarium to Gardener (4 Gardeners) 45,164
Helper’s salary is more than other school teacher’s salay, are they residential helpers and need to be paid more? 4. Also, will the education center need all 4 gardeners the whole year ? The helpers are responsible for housekeeping of the Pre-Primary Centre as well as catering to the needs of 90 children. Most of the children in the Pre-Primary Centre are between the ages of 2.5 – 4.5 years and hence, require assistance with hygiene related issues, which is not the case for the older children. The Centre is set up on a 14 acre hilly terrain and requires year-round physical manpower to maintain it. Further, with agriculture as the predominant occupation of the region, children will be equipped with requisites skills from Grade 4 onwards beginning July 2017. The practical sessions will be conducted at the Centre. Facilitating environmental practices at the Centres will also encourage the villagers to emulate these practices on their land. Hence, the need for four gardeners. With Employee’s Provident Fund becoming applicable to NGOs from April 2015, we have had to make provisions for the same. Hence, the revised rates in honoraria.
