Indication of price drivers in short-to-medium term:
• Implementation of carbon tax from 2016
• Call for cost-reflective electricity tariff increases
Govt proposed support for energy efficiency & self-generation of power
• Temp increase in electricity levy from 3.5c/kWh to 5.5c/kWh for DSM
• Increase in 12L energy efficiency incentive: 45c/kWh to 95c/kWh
• Proposed implementation of further accelerated depreciation for
solar power installations (Ts & Cs apply)

• City retrofit of 8 of largest buildings so far: Lighting, Solar Water
Heaters & Photo Voltaic, HVAC and thermostat control etc.
• More efficient street & traffic lights.
• Saving City over R20 million per year.
City is leading by example
• City’s first subsidised housing project fitted with locally-produced
solar panel lighting- Belhar-Pentech to house 340 families. <100
EPWP jobs will be created during construction.
• City to convert landfill gasses into energy, and has successfully
registered its programme of activities with UNFCCC to earn
carbon credits. Umbrella for registering other SA projects too.
