Rupa, pictured right, founded the shelter for abused women after a late night visit from a desperate woman soaked in gasoline.  Her husband was going to light the match, and though she escaped with her life, she had nowhere to go.  As Rupa pondered what to do, the young woman told her ‘if you close that door, you may as well just give me a match’.  Not only did Rupa open her door, she’s changed countless lives since that fateful night so long ago.

Today, Sasikala is the CORDI Shelter House Mother.  She became active after her own daughter needed to use the shelter 15 years ago.  Since then, Sasikala has started 15 Self‐Help Groups.

Three years ago, Devi lived with an abusive husband. He demanded that Devi’s family continue to pay dowry for their daughter, even after he and Devi were married. When they could no longer afford to meet his demands, Devi’s husband became violent.  Devi ended in the hospital.

Fortunately, Devi was referred to the CORDI Women’s Shelter in Chennai. She lived at the shelter for 4 months. There, Devi received counseling, learned how to read and write, and got vocational training.

Two years later, Devi became one of the founders of a Self‐Help Group, a collective of 12       low‐income women working to improve their lives. 

CORDI helped Devi and the other members of the group get started. 

Members also received training in tailoring, food preparation and other skills to help them improve their incomes. 

They have also started a rotating micro-loan program to help each other meet basic needs, and to start small businesses.

“I keep the accounts for the group, and help teach the other women how to do the same,” Devi says proudly.

LalitaLalita is a member of Devi’s Self Help Group.

She took a loan from the group’s rotating credit fund and started her own business making and selling chips (papadums).
