A U.S. Department

that C/S Sun Controls do a
lot more than look great.
For fifty years C/S Sun Controls have helped architects not only make their buildingsunique, but they’ve also helped reduce their building’s heat, glare and overall energy costs. Last year AMCA International in conjunction with the Department of Energy did an extensive study on sun

advantages. Several studies show that buildings employing daylight management increases worker comfortand productivity, lowers absenteeism, and improves educational performance. To see what a C/S Sun Control can dofor your building, call 800-631-7379.

For the University of South Florida School of Medicine,
Alfonso Architects’ goal was to create a clean,
modern building that would be energy efficient
and meet the project’s budget. With the building oriented on
an east/west axis, Albert Alfonso and his design team decided
to use sun control on the building’s Southern exposure to
reduce the heat and glare of the afternoon sun. Alfonso
worked closely with Construction Specialties’
local representative to develop a custom sun
control that could be easily mounted to the curtain
wall system. The solar calculations of the 3' deep
sunshades proved to be so effective at reducing heat
gain, that Alfonso was able to save the client
additional budget dollars by specifying standard
1/4" glass instead of more costly insulated glass.

Masonry Building with Horizontal Sunshades
Project:TWU Institute of Health Sciences, Houston, TX
Architect: Kirksey, Houston, TX
Sun Control Type:Horizontal Sun Control
Project Description:At this teaching hospital in Houston TX, Kirksey Architectsworked with C/S Engineers to create a Vertical Sunshade that utilizes 17" airfoil blades. Used on the Southern and Eastern elevations, the sunshades are designed to reduce heat and glare while providing filtered light to the classroom and studyareas of the medical school. At the Southeastern corner the sunshades are mounted to thecurtain wall through the use of a custom C/S bracket.

Sun Control Type:Fixed Horizontal & Cantilevered Sunshades
Project Description:Due to the orientation of thebuilding, Perkins + Will specifiedtwo distinctively different sunshades for each elevation. Tocontrol the sun at lower anglesin the morning and afternoon, fixed horizontal line sunshadeswith trapezoidal blades are used on the east and southernelevations. On the Southern elevation where the sun angle ishigher a cantilevered sunshadewith 6" airfoils are used.

Anatomy of a C/S Sun Control
Precision attachments custom manufacturedfor all curtain wall or masonry projects.
C/S Sun Controls are custom designed to attach to any type of building including: all of the major curtain wall manufacturers systems, metal panel/skinned and masonrybuildings. Each C/S attachment is designed to handle theloading of either cantilevered or suspended sun controls.Connections allow for expansion and contraction withoutbending or deformation and are designed to meet yourbuilding’s specific wind or snow load.
C/S Sun Controls are manufactured in adequate depths to achieve required shading. Most curtain wall manufacturers will notallow projections in excess of 36". C/S does not limit the size of the Sun Controlprojection, although five feet is adequatefor most situations.

Quality is about delivering what your project requires.

A close look reveals what makes us different.
Customize your Sun Control withthe industry’s largest selection ofblade and infill styles.
The blade is potentially the most importantelement within a sun control in providingeffective sunshading. Once the designerselects a blade style, a C/S Engineer willguide them on how to achieve economiesthrough blade rotation and spacing, while maximizing the sunshade’s performance.
Sunpath Tracking
C/S “Solar Motion” .AVI video files provide a dramatic view of your sunshade’s performance on any day of the year and any location, world wide. Using thesecalculations the designer can specify themost effective sunshade for the project.
Custom Engineering
As the inventor and innovator of C/SSun Controls, our engineers are the oneswho figured out how to adhere themsafely to all types of buildings. Calculatingloads and customizing attachment hardware is what we do.
Dramatic outriggers and fascias designed towork with your building’s architecture.
The outrigger is key to the sun control’s ability to project greater distances. With a limitless choice ofoutriggers, C/S allows designers to specify the height, thickness and projection to meet their buildings functional, aesthetic and engineering requirements.Fascias are a bold aesthetic element that provides the finishing touch to your sun control. See page 23 for our standard designs.

Introducing100% energy efficient lighting–the sun!
The perfect solution to glare
Heat and glare from unprotected windows can make building occupants uncomfortable and inefficient.
Lightshelves connected to sunshades reduce heat and glareand brings soft diffused light deep into a building’s interior.
Controlling the sun on the exterior of a building is only part of Daylight Management.Bringing natural daylight deeper into a building’sinterior can not only make the building moreenergy efficient, but it can have positive benefitson the building’s occupants as well.
By marrying the strengths of our sunshades withour lightshelves and skylights shutters, C/S offersmore ways for buildings to benefit from naturaldaylight than anyone.
C/S Lightshelves reduce energy costs whilebringing daylight deeper into the building’s interior. Our standard lightshelf is a 30" widepanel with a highly reflective top surface. A variety of edge treatments and mountingstyles are available.
C/S Skylight Shutters allow softlydiffused light into building interiorswhile minimizing solar heat gain.Framed shutters may be free standingor attached to the skylight structure. C/S SkylightShutters can be controlled by a solar trackingdevice to regulate the amount of light entry.
C/S Lightshelves
C/S Lightshelves directlight deeply into thebuilding. They reduceheat and glare allowingoccupants to sit adjacent to windows.
