Controlling Color on CorrugatedColor Consistency

Presented by: Name: Carl CecilTitle: Graphics/Educational SpecialistCompany: Color Resolutions International

Topic Discussion•Is color that critical?•What are the variables affecting color reproduction on corrugated?

•How do you check color press-side?•What percentage of predictability do you have from the ink lab to the press?

•Do you have a process for color management?

Is color that critical?we live in a world of color...

our eyes are stimulated by the reflected wavelengths of red, green and blue.

The major Consumer Product Companieshave determined that over 80% of the buying decisions in the retail environmentare made within the first 3-4 seconds ofvisual contact with the packaging.

Variables affecting color

•Paper.•Anilox rolls.•Ink (viscosity).•The cones in our eyes.

Anilox Rolls

• Volume is measured in Billion Cubic Microns (BCM) per square inch.

• 1 BCM = 1 microliter (1 millionth of a liter)• Cubic Centimeters per Square Meter (cc/m2) is the

standard used in Europe and parts of Asia.

densitometersDensitometers are instruments used to measure the amount of light absorbed by a material. There are two types of densitometers.

• transmission densitometers -measure the amount of light that is transmitted through a transparent material such as film.

• reflection densitometers - measure the amount of light reflected by a surface.

colorimetersmeasure the amount of RGB light reflected from the sample.

spectrophotometersmeasure the amount of light at each specific wavelength reflected from the sample.

• Load colors onto X-rite software and create a customer file called press correlations.

• Store with the following tolerances• Type = DE CMC/DE 94 I= 2.0 c = .8 cf= .8• Illuminate observer = D65/10-D50/2• Using the mechanical proffer create a proof of the ink.• Measure the second revolution and evaluate with the X-Rite.• Evaluate apparent density specifications of + or - 5%• Evaluate Lightness specifications of + or - .5 • Evaluate Delta E specifications of DE CMC/DE 94 < .8
