Welcome to the CLO winter
newsletter. June brings to a close our
16-18 strategic planning phase. We are
pleased to report that we have
achieved nearly 90% of our
organisational objectives against our
strategic plan, Business safety plan,
Disability Action and Inclusion plan and
the NDIS action plan. I thank all our
stakeholders for their investment in
CLO and our outcomes
over the past 2 years.
Our teams this year
have invested heavily in
the NDIS transition and
all the work this brings to
support fully our clients,
families and staff
through the transition.
The sector recently
announced a delay in the
South Australian roll out
to December 2018, this
means that the state will
roll over host funding
arrangements while the
transition continues. We continue to
invest heavily in initiatives and
information that supports everyone
through this unprecedented change.
This includes: continued coffee
mornings and drop in sessions, staff
question and answer forums, email
notifications and NDIS customer
Services training. To support best
outcomes for our clients and families

plans approved to date and four new
24/7 service development
opportunities in the last period.
SIL (Supported independent living)
is the new nationally consistent
framework for costing and pricing
group homes. The operations and
business team monitor via our
NDIS/SIL working group the
preparation of the SIL pack
documents: the outcomes
template, participant profile, the
property profile, the roster of
care and the hourly breakdown
template. Ensuring quality and
efficiencies in the completion of
the SIL will maximise plan
amounts for participants.
Outcomes reporting is an
essential requirement under the
NDIS reporting framework. CLO have
robust systems for tracking goals and
outcomes.
An area of concern moving into
the NDIA model and tabled within
the sector has been crisis and
emergency support systems. We are
pleased to announce that we have
supported the new NDIA crisis and
emergency system by agreeing to be
one of the contracted SA providers to
provide emergency and crisis
support. We are now building
capacity to ensure responsiveness to
this system in SA.
July will bring our new strategic
planning phase and I thank everyone
for their participation in our analyses
that underpin our strategic direction
and objectives for 2018-2020. This
included all teams participating in a
SWOT analysis, a family survey, the
CLO culture survey and consumer
standards and choice and control
questionnaires. We continue to
believe in our Vision for providing
‘great opportunities and a great life’
and now enter a new strategic
direction ‘Delivering Excellence’
with our excellent results in the
ASES accreditation at both
certificate and award level and
the implementation of new
positions in our clinical team and
the Quality/WHS and RTW role
we are poised to deliver
excellence and demonstrate
quality outcomes as we
transition into NDIS. It is with
pleasure that we now deliver our
new strategic plan that extends
our key result areas to include
‘Leadership’ and ‘People and

and our staff that we will continue to
deliver excellence and achieve our

CLO advertisements have recently appeared on billboards and bus shelters around town much to the delight of the star models Andrew and Danielle.
This is all part of a strategy to make sure as many people as possible have access to CLO’s support so they too can have great opportunities and a great life!
We thank both Danielle and Andrew for being a part of this campaign and putting their faces out there in such a public way.
Word of mouth is also priceless so if you think someone could benefit from what we do at CLO, let them know to be in touch with us on (08) 7221 9550 or through clo.org.au.

What was the last thing you heard or saw which made
you laugh out loud?
Watching the 'What the Fluff challenge'. It's a challenge
people are doing with their dogs where they hold up a
blanket in front of their dog, then they drop the blanket
and run away to make it look like they've disappeared,
then the dogs react. Some get heaps confused, others run
to find their owners, some do nothing, hahahaha!
YouTube it and try it with your adopted fur baby!
If you could be on any TV game show, which would it be?
Oh no! I don't watch TV game shows. I have been
watching Queer Eye on Netflix though! It's a series where
five men called the 'Fab Five' come in to someone's life
and give the person a lifestyle makeover. One specialises
in food, one in interior design, one in fashion design and
another in culture / mentoring. I would be keen to go on
this show because anyone who knows me knows I'm a
serial hat wearer and I'm totally stuck in some sk8r boi
clothing era, hahaha! The interior decorating and
everything else they offer would be a bonus too.
What’s the number 1 piece of advice you would give
others about life?
Laugh tremendous amounts.
What is the most rewarding thing about working in your
role?
As I have been working for CLO for nearly 11 years now, I
have been able to watch a lot of the people I support
develop over time and what I find rewarding is knowing
I'm a small cog in the machine of that development. From
people overcoming fears and trying new things to getting
better at certain day to day tasks, the list goes on. This
includes CLO's evolution as a successful organisation too.
What does ‘person-centred’ mean to you?
To me, 'Person-centred' means the person receiving
support is at the centre of the decisions that relate to their
life..
What are you most excited about in your role at CLO?
What mostly excites me about my role at CLO is engaging
the people I support to be included in all the day to day
activities of their life and seeing how that positively
impacts them. I also get excited about supporting people
to community events and family meet ups as they're
always full of happiness and joy.

2018 has been an exciting year for
the Green Team as we continue to
push forward with initiatives.
We have now partnered with the
South Australian Governments,
'Energ Partners rogram' and you will
start to see information and
publications on ways to help us
reduce our energy usage. We have
also purchased a Home Energy
Audit Kit, which will allow every
person we support to be able to
measure their energy hotspots and
target specific reductions based on
their personal use and homes. More
info on the energy audits to come.
This year, CLO has also partnered
with the NRM Levy and Be Smart inc
to bring an exciting initiative to our
Victor Harbor office; the 'Living
Smart; course. Shannan is a trained
facilitator of the Living Smart course
and with the help of support
worker and Green Team member,
Sharon Dredge, is running a free 5
week course about environmental
sustainability. Over the 5 weeks,
course participants will learn how to
save money and help protect the
planet, in a fun and interactive
atmosphere. We have just
completed week 3 and look forward
to the next 2 weeks. So far we have
learned about many topics and
made many take home items.
Look out for the '2018 Upcycle
Competition' information in the
next few months!
For more information, please

The Narnu Farm experience was both exciting and a challenge for me as I am new to the disability industry, getting to know some of the clients and other support staff and how we all worked together to problem solve and support the clients was an awesome opportunity and one I will not forget.
The camp itself was great the activities were easy accessible for the clients with a range of activities including- horse riding, horse shoe making demonstration. Flour and butter making, ploughing, the most memorable of all the activities I would have to say was the old truck ride to feed the horses, im quite sure the clients loved this as well, not sure by the expressions on their faces or the pictures I think the laughter coming from the back of the truck said it all.
In my view l would have say it was a very successful camp and I think
the clients enjoyed themselves, I know one client from Modra who
went loved it and talks about wanting to go back regularly.

NARNU CAMP 2018
We stayed at Nurnu farm camp from Wednesday
and came back Friday. We did a lot of things at
camp we watched the lady make a horse shoe, then
we made butter and flour by turning a handle on
a thing.
We ate the butter for tea with some bread across the
road at the girl's camp.
We went on a truck ride and it was bumpy and a
little scary, we fed the horses a lot of carrots form
the truck.
It was cold there but we had a wood fire and a
heater.
I liked the camp best for feeding the animals,
holding baby chickens, feeding the goats milk,
making flour, truck rides, and the roast tea we
had.
I would like to go back to Narnu Farm one day.

CONGRATULATIONS to all our Person Centred Support Workers across the regions for their achievements in our Reward & Recognition program! Over the past few months, we have had many TEAMS nominated, which is reflective of our fantastic team work across the organisation and in ensuring we all work as one Team CLO.
METRO
Metro’s Talinga Site did a fantastic job supporting someone to transition into the community and to develop a structured routine and received special recognition from stakeholders at a recent case conference. Well done to Peta Jones, Cazz Priest, Angeleen Ralph and Teigan Howl for this excellent achievement.
Metro’s Wilcox Team members displayed a fabulous person centred approach at the Site and specifically in the support of Shantel up until she passed away. The team put forward ideas to support development that was individualised to Shantel and advocated for her best interests. Well done to Cheryl Hubbard, John Vardas, Andy Fallon, Alan Westbrook, Bryce Harrison, Luke Thyer, Dom White, David Ayika, Sally Corbett, Lucy Faustino and James Adeyeye, your work is greatly appreciated!
Kirsty Kiss from Metro has done a great job in commencing as Acting Client Services Coordinator building rapport with new staff and developing staff skills and knowledge, which further supports client outcomes. Kirsty has displayed great professionalism in the workplace and with external stakeholders, creating community connectedness. Well done Kirsty!
Sam Warren from Metro has also commenced as Acting Client Services Coordinator and has displayed a fantastic person centred approach in supporting client transitions as well as maintaining a
high level of support for other sites. Sam has worked well and professionally with client families and external stakeholders; creating community connectedness and he shows a great passion for his role. This is also evident through feedback from staff, consumers and families. Well done Sam!
SOUTHERN METRO
Team Trowbridge from CLO’s Southern
Metro region have had some excellent outcomes with the person they support and have worked hard to ensure a person centred approach in all their work. These efforts have resulted in developing problem solving skills and increasing community access, including a trip to WOMAD and completing RSPCA volunteer training. Team Trowbridge received some wonderful thanks from family and have been recognised by an industry leading psychologist for their work! Well done Rachel Wren, Karmen Power, Janet Daher and Sophie Henschke.
Eyeruslem Woldemariam has shown great flexibility at CLO, supporting the Southern Metro region to achieve objectives and outcomes. Eyeruslem has a person centred approach, is passionate
and is a great advocate for the people we support. She has also supported someone to transition from 24/7 support to a tenancy model. Well done Eyeruslem!
FLEURIEU
Fleurieu region’s Sam Jeffery displayed some excellent person centred approaches in supporting individual clients to achieve goals. This included
supporting a client through the process of obtaining quotes for a cat enclosure and supporting them to purchase and set this up! Sam has also been instrumental in the achievement of goals with other clients and in reporting monthly goals and outcomes to the Coordinator – well done Sam!
Jude Bartlett from Fleurieu (Kangaroo Island) has also gone above and beyond for the people she supports, ensuring appointments and travel from KI to the mainland are smooth and effective. Jude has supported goals and maintained positive relations and communications with
families during some difficult times. Well done and thank you Jude!
Russell Hennessy was the first CLO staff member to initiate using public transport with one of the people he supports at Peterson who is unable to use the site vehicle. This initiative has increased the client’s social opportunities. Russell is pro-active in sourcing alternative community options and makes decisions confidently when supporting people with complex needs in the community. Russell has supported community and social inclusion through supporting a client to the International Day of People with Disabilities, as well as supporting trips to the SA Museum and achieving a client’s long-term goal of visiting Cleland Wildlife Park. Well done Russell!

Wow! What a great experience for both the people we support and workers who attended the Adelaide Oval for the "Showdown"!
I drove Allan & Andrew F to the Warradale train station & we got the best car park (A tip: Better normally than trying to get a park at Oaklands station). A train arrived within a minute and we were at the CBD before we knew it. We then walked over the bridge with the rest of the crowd and met the other CLO folk there. Things could not have been smoother.
We were kindly escorted to one of the media rooms. 5 of the people we support and 2 workers (7 of us including myself) had one of the media rooms up
on the 4th level all to our selves and we were brought refreshments to enjoy as well.
It was a wonderful experience (and very noisy!!!) LOL The room was full of excitement & mixed emotions as the game was a very close one. Some of the words used to describe the moment by some of our folk was "magical", "wow", "this is awesome" and more. Everyone seemed to have so much fun (though there were a few tears too when the match was finished and the Crows had lost).
I hope that we can extend a very big thank you to the Port Adelaide Football Club for kindly forwarding the tickets to us.
Thanks to Julian for sharing this photo he got when meeting Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes.
Well done to Robert (and Connie) who braved extreme winter conditions to see Port’s comprehensive win against the Bulldogs in round 13.

Having worked for CLO for eight
years starting in January 2010, I enjoy
being a part of making a difference in
people’s lives and assisting people to
live great lives and achieve their goals
and dreams. My experience has come
from working across all regions with
CLO in various roles working
alongside individuals and their
families. I am eager to have the
opportunity to work in the Service
Development Coordinator role
meeting many new families and
individuals, being a part of welcoming
each person to CLO.
It is exciting times during April and
May with three new services
commencing, giving CLO the
opportunity to provide supports to
people moving into their brand new
homes, as part of the Renewal SA 100
homes project. It is very empowering
to have the opportunity to move into
a brand new home fitted with smart
technology for each tenant to have
increased independence. One of our
existing clients will also have the
opportunity to move into one of
these homes. Being in a position to
support each person navigate
through this process is rewarding.
The Service Development
Coordinator role includes hosting
NDIS info sessions in our Metro,
Southern Metro and Fleurieu regions.
These are information sessions for
people in the community as well as
our own service users to give the
opportunity to have information in
readiness for preparing for the
transition to NDIS. Changes do come
with challenges, the info sessions are
a great place to gather have your
questions answered and meet others
also navigating through change. Our
coffee morning information session
dates are on our Facebook page.

COMMUNITY MINDED AMANDA LIVES TO GIVE...
Amanda joined Community Living Options in 2014. Amanda lives in a cluster with other clients which is spread across five units.
Amanda is close with her family and friends and enjoys participating in activity outings such as going to the beach with friends and family or going to charity outlets (op shops, goodwill or second hand shops) and going to Club Slick once a month.
Amanda enjoys participating and helping people within the community when she can. Her recent project is doing a big spring clean within her home
and decided to donate certain items that she does not want to keep to goodwill. “I really wanted to donate things to the goodwill to help other people who cannot afford to purchase much” Amanda stated. Amanda also hoped that giving away her stuff may put a smile on someone else’s face adding that she gives a lot of spare shopping bags that she doesn’t use to charity outlets.

Cooking with CLO was run over 4 weeks at
the Morphett Vale office, as well as the
Victor Harbor office.
Over these sessions the goals were to
provide clients with information and
training in relation to kitchen safety and
hygiene, healthy food choices, budgeting
and menu planning and a community
shopping visit to practice skills learnt over
the 4 sessions.
Cooking with CLO also provided clients
from different sites with the opportunities
for interaction and participation in social
activities. Furthermore it offered the
opportunities for clients to achieve their
developmental and independent living
goals for health, education and personal
care and safety.
Everyone who participated gave positive
feedback about the content in each
session and loved cooking the yummy
recipes. There has been plenty of interest
from other CLO clients to participate in the
program when it is next scheduled to run
again.
We’d love to hear from you if you are
interested in being in the next ‘Cooking
with CLO’.
