The Akita is an ancient breed native to Akita city in the Tohoku region of Honshu. The Akita has been a symbol of healthand prosperity and bears the status of an imperial symbol and guard. The breed’s history began in 1630 when Matagi Inubreeders started crossing their dogs with other breeds indigenous to the Akita region. The resulting breed was known asthe Odate Inu, which were crossbred with dogs native to other regions of Japan and larger European dogs, leading to themodern day Akita. In 1931 the Akita was designated as a national monument and became the national dog of Japan. Thebreed was established as a purebred line at that time. The Akita came to the United States when Helen Keller receivedone as a gift in 1937. After World War II the breed nearly disappeared as the breed’s fur was used for combat clothingand owners tried protecting the dogs by crossbreeding with German Shepherds. Selective breeding began in 1945 toeliminate German Shepherd traits and return pre-war breed characteristics. In 1972 the breed was admitted into theAmerican Kennel Club Studbook.
The Akita may be any color including white, brindle or pinto (white with evenly placed patches covering the head andbody). Black masks are possible in this breed, but not on white dogs. A white chest blaze is also sometimes seen.
Do You Recognize Any of These Akita Traits In Tina?

EARS MUZZLE TAIL
The American Staffordshire Terrier can trace its roots all the way back to the nineteenth century in England. The EnglishStaffordshire Terrier was created when various terriers were crossed with the Bulldog. The crossbreeding resulted in theactive and powerful breed that came to the attention of the United States public in 1870. American breeders then focusedtheir attention and efforts to increasing the size and weight of the American Staffordshire Terrier. These breeding effortsresulted in a Staffordshire Terrier that was recognized as a separate breed by the American Kennel Club in 1936. In1972, the current name of “American Staffordshire Terrier” was adopted. The American Staffordshire Terrier was onceused primarily for fighting. That practice, however, was banned in the early 1900’s and two separate variations of thebreed were gradually developed.
The American Staffordshire Terrier can be any color, with solid, particolor, or patched black, brown, tan, brindle (blackand brown striped), liver, red or fawn. Black or blue mask, brindle or tan points are commonly seen traits in this breed.Ears may also appear different due to cropping.
Do You Recognize Any of These American Staffordshire Terrier Traits In Tina?
Intelligent, hard-working, and stoic dogs.Very loyal to family and usually good with children. May notget along well with other dogs.
American Staffordshire Terriers seem to enjoy dog sportssuch as agility, flyball, rally and competitive obedience.
There have been reported incidents of American StaffordshireTerriers being aggressive with other pets or people.
HOW KEY PHYSICAL TRAITS ARE INHERITED
The Influence of Breeds on Appearance
This report reveals the breeds detected in your dog’s DNA. It also includes checklists of physical traits associatedwith these breeds. Breeds can combine their influences in countless, fascinating ways. It’s the unique combinationthat makes your dog one-of-a-kind.
Your dog may behave like, or strongly resemble, just one of the breeds in its makeup. However much more commonlyyour dog’s looks and personality will blend aspects of these breeds. In the example below you can see how many ofFrankie’s physical traits are due to a blending of breed influences.
FEATHERINGThe longer hair on thelegs, tail and around theears, is due to dominantmodifier genes availablefrom the ShetlandSheepdog.
BLACK PIGMENTThis coloring in thenose, eye rims, lips andpads on the feet is dueto one copy of the blackgene variant, availablefrom all three ancestralbreeds.
WHITE SPOTTINGThis is due to a lack of pigment andis often found in the extremities (feet, chest, face, etc.), but can also extendover more of the body. It can be due tomany genes including those found inthe three ancestral breeds here.
BRINDLE COAT COLORThe black and tan striping in Frankie’scoat is a dominant trait coming fromone copy of the brindle gene variant. This is available from the ItalianGreyhound, Parson Russell Terrier andShetland Sheepdog.
SHORT HAIRThis is due to one copyof the gene variant fromthe Italian Greyhound orthe Parson Russell Terrierthat is dominant over thelong coat gene from theShetland Sheepdog.
Wisdom Panel® found these breeds in our example dog Frankie:

MIXED BREED SIGNATURES (IF DETECTED)
What Does the Mixed Breed Ancestry Mean for TINA?
A portion of Tina’s ancestry was predicted to be mixed beyond the three generations we test for. It isdifficult to identify strong breed signals in this mixed portion, so we have listed the five breeds with thestrongest statistical likelihood below.
The breeds are listed in order of strength with the most likely at the top of the list. One or more of thesebreeds MAY HAVE contributed to the genetic makeup in the mixed breed icon(s), but it is highly unlikely that
all these breeds are present in Tina’s ancestry.
Note that there could also be a breed or breeds present in the mixed breed component that cannot bedetected with the current database of over 200 breeds.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Predicted Adult Weight Profile
Based upon the breeds detected in Tina’s ancestry and the genetic markers analyzed by Wisdom Panel®, as well as theinformation provided that Tina is Female and Intact, we have calculated the likely weight that Tina should reach whenan adult. The Wisdom Panel target weight profile is presented as a range based on the unique mix and proportionof breeds detected.
• If Intact, the adult weight is predicted to be between 45 - 71 lbs.
• If Spayed, the adult weight is predicted to be between 50 - 78 lbs.
Many factors can influence an adult dog’s weight, including sex and neuter status. Both of these factors have beenused to calculate the predicted weight profile. Another major influence on canine weight is body condition score, which is a factor of your dog’s lifetime nutrition and exercise regimen. If your dog’s body condition is different fromthe ideal body condition score, we anticipate that your dog might be under (if underweight) or over (if overweight)the weight predicted by Wisdom Panel.
To learn more about assessing body condition score, please use the Royal Canin™ Body Condition Score Chart:http://about.royalcanin.co.uk/dog-body-condition/

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Thank You for Using Wisdom Panel® to Uncover the Story of Your Dog’s
Ancestry!Congratulations on taking the steps to learn about Tina’s ancestry and to understandwhat breeds are in your mixed breed dog using Wisdom Panel! Knowing your dog’s breedsis more than a novelty - it is a medical necessity. Each breed in your pooch’s geneticpaw print has unique health concerns you should know about so that you can providea lifetime of excellent care.
We recommend discussing your dog’s ancestry report with your veterinarian, as he or she can help you use your Wisdom
Panel report to help better care for Tina. The next time you visit your veterinarian, consider asking these questionsin addition to any you come up with on your own:
• Are there any specific issues that may be relevant to my dog’s well-being?
• Are there any special techniques that may help in training a dog with this particular mix?
• Are there any particular dietary considerations to bear in mind for a dog like mine?
How Wisdom Panel WorksThe process started when you sent a sample to our laboratory, where the DNA was extracted from the cells andexamined for the 321 markers that are used in the test. The results for these markers were sent to a computer, that evaluated them using a program designed to consider all of the pedigree trees that are possible in the lastthree generations. The trees considered include a simple pedigree with a single breed (a likely pure-bred dog), twodifferent breeds at the parental level (a first-generation cross), all the way up to a complex tree with eight differentgreat-grandparent breeds allowed.
Our computer used information from over 200 breeds and varieties from our breed database to fill these potentialpedigrees. For each of the millions of combinations of ancestry trees built and considered, the computer gave eacha score representing how well that selected combination of breeds matched to your dog’s data. The pedigree withthe overall best score is the one which is shown on the ancestry chart. Only breeds that reached our set confidencethreshold for reporting are reported in the ancestry chart.
Terms And ConditionsEach dog is unique and their physical and behavioral traits will be the result ofmultiple factors, including genetics, training, handling, and environment. Using
a proprietary analysis and database, Wisdom Panel® 2.0 product can provide
insight into the breed ancestry of your dog. The Wisdom Panel® 2.0 product isdesigned and intended to be used solely to either identify the genetic breedmakeup and predict the adult size of such a mixed-breed dog, or to confirm thegenetic profile observed in a tested dog matches a particular breed profile. Noother purpose is intended, authorized, or permitted.
Upon receipt of your sample, Mars Veterinary will analyze your dog’s DNA todetermine the breed(s) present in your dog’s recent ancestry. In the case of alikely purebred dog, this will involve a comparison of genetic profile in your dogto a proposed breed. In the case of a proposed crossbred dog (i.e. a dog withancestry from two different purebred parents), this will involve determining theheritage of your dog’s sire and dam. In all cases this is done with a reasonabledegree of certainty.
Mars Veterinary’s testing procedures are designed to provide reliable andaccurate results. Mars Veterinary is not responsible for any errors in obtainingthe swab sample or for any injuries or loss that may occur as a result.
In the unlikely event that it is not possible to determine breed history or that anerror in the analysis occurs, liability by Mars Veterinary or related companies andindividuals is expressly disclaimed. Damages, if any, are limited to the paymentactually received by Mars Veterinary for the specified analysis at issue.
Wisdom Panel®2.0 is based upon the Mars Veterinary database of validatedbreeds. If your dog contains other breeds, it may result in the identification ofbreeds, or a combination of breeds in the database, related to the breeds inyour pet’s history.
Many countries and provinces have breed-specific ordinances and laws that mayrequire special handling or prohibit the ownership of some dogs with a particular
breed in their genetic background. Wisdom Panel® 2.0 is not intended to be usedby regulatory or animal control officials to determine whether a particular breed
is legislated or banned in a particular country or province. Nor is Wisdom Panel®
2.0 intended to be used in any judicial proceedings. Rather, it is intended to beused as a tool or resource in determining a dog's genetic history. Neither MarsVeterinary nor any related company is responsible for compliance or notificationregarding these matters.
