Welcome back to Term Two after a very significant break which included our Easter celebrations.

The culmination of Easter, with the duality of suffering and ultimately hope, resonates well with this time to reflect on the ANZAC story. We will be acknowledging ANZAC day at our College Assembly today, while we will be represented by students at the ANZAC Day ceremonies at the Dawn Service at Mt Macedon and in Kyneton and other towns in our community on 25 April.

Our Mercy values were alive and well with our numerous student volunteers and staff who conducted Camp Campaspe for primary aged students in the area who benefit from this holiday program. Thank you to Mr Sam Weir for his leadership and service to community in developing this initiative.

Our Athletics carnival was a great success. I congratulate all our students for their participation and team spirit. Our senior students are to be congratulated for their leadership on the day. Results will be available in a future Newsletter as a few events are yet to be held due to time constraints caused by the commute to Bendigo. Well done to all!

I congratulate the vast majority of students who do the right thing by correctly wearing their uniform. At the College, learning and teaching is the most important thing we do. We have a uniform to keep things simple, limiting choice, fashion statements and branding. As a College we will continue to strive to see that we get it right.

I wish all our students every success for the Term ahead, success comes from hard work not good luck. All the best!

The beginning of Term Two consists of short but very busy weeks. This week has seen a Tuesday start, leading into a successful Athletics Carnival, followed by Student Progress Interviews, and culminating in our own ANZAC service on Friday. Lots of activity and involvement from all areas of the College, which creates a fantastic, vibrant feel to the place. Next week sees a Professional Learning day for staff Monday, followed by ANZAC Day and the second evening of SPIs. We are all certainly aware that holidays have well and truly finished!

Students are now in full winter uniform, with this year being the last year that students other than Year 12 2018 are able to wear the old uniform. If your child is growing out of their uniform, please keep in mind that they will not get any more wear out of it next year. It is compulsory to wear blazers to and from school, and optional through the day. All winter items are available at the College uniform shop.

As mentioned previously, the College will hold its own ANZAC service today. This is to commemorate for the students the significance of the day next Tuesday, and provide an experience of the service for those unable to attend one on the day. The Reflection will be presented by Patrick Bradfield Smith, and is his own perspective. This will be a growing tradition for the College, and I welcome information from families who may have a personal war story that their student could present as the Reflection. Please feel free to contact me any time if you would like to discuss this. Sacred Heart will be represented at several local services on Tuesday, with students laying wreaths on the College’s behalf. These students have willingly agreed to participate in their local services, which shows great qualities about them as people. They see this opportunity as a privilege. This has been wonderful to witness, and we look forward to hearing about their experiences.

NAPLAN Update

We have just been advised by Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) that the Victorian Government has postponed the involvement in NAPLAN Online for 2017. This will mean that Sacred Heart College will return to pen and paper format for 2017. Below is the NAPLAN timetable for Years 7 and 9, commencing on Tuesday 9 May. All students are expected to participate in the tests. Students with disability may qualify for reasonable adjustments that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom. Some students with very specific circumstances may be exempted from participating in the tests. For information about participation in NAPLAN, you can go to: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support.html. Please contact Sally Dick, Individual Learning Needs Coordinator or Joanne Holmes, Director of Transition and Curriculum for more information.

NAPLAN Dates for Year 7 and Year 9

Students will be required to bring a black or blue pen, black lead pencil, eraser and sharpener for all tests. They will also require their mathematics calculator for the numeracy calculator test.

Curriculum Matters: Semester Two Subject Changes

Year 9, 10 and 11 students will be able to make Semester Two Subject/Elective changes from Monday 29 May and finalised by Friday 9 June. This will be advertised in Daily Messages from Monday 22 May. Changes are depend-ent upon class sizes, timetable blocking and prerequisite units for VCE subjects.

Students considering a change in subject/elective have been asked to consider the following points:

Does this subject still fit with future career aspirations?

Is the subject a prerequisite for my future course?

Do I need to book a career interview to explore options/check prerequisites?

Have I read the information on the subject in the Year 9/10/11/12 Course Description Handbooks?

Have I talked to a subject teacher about the intended subject?

Lunchtime appointments are essential to make these changes and will take place in Upper O’Neill, O211, Mrs Holmes’ Office. An appointment sign-up sheet will be outside Year 7-9 Student Office from 22 May.

Once the official paperwork has been returned, the appropriate timetable changes will be made. Students are required to purchase all textbooks, ebooks and stationery by the end of Term Two. Changes will be reflected in SIMON at the beginning of Semester Two.

MUSIC NOTES - Mr Terry Carrick

2017 French Exchange visit from Notre Dame du Roc Since the first visit of Monsieur Emmanuel Thielin and ten students from Notre Dame du Roc, France in 2013, the popular mutual exchange of students has continued.

On Tuesday 18 April, 25 French students, Monsieur Thielin and Pascale Caillaud arrived in Kyneton where they were eagerly welcomed by our College’s host families. In some cases it is a reunion as our students stayed with their French friend last year and for others it is a new experience which will certainly prove to be very beneficial for the acquisition of language and as a cultural exchange.

Monsieur Thielin is very pleased to return to our beautiful autumn in the Central Highlands which offers both access to Melbourne and rural lifestyle experiences for the French students. On arriving in Sydney last week, according to Pascale, students were disappointed not to have seen kangaroos in the streets!

By now they will have attended the Athletics Carnival and classes and will be planning to play “un jeu de foot” on Friday at lunchtime. We wish them well for their two week visit and encourage every student to say Bonjour and G’day.

ANZAC Day is a very important time in the Music Department. Today’s ANZAC ceremony saw Harrison Gatt, from Year 7, perform the bugle calls of the Last Post and Reveille beautifully. This is the first time this has been performed at a school event by a Year 7 student. We also saw performances by our Chamber Singers, under the direction of Mrs Helen Duggan. These students have been rehearsing intensively and will be performing on Tuesday morning at the Mt Macedon ANZAC Dawn Service. Over the holidays, Kyneton lost a very important member of the community. Jenny Batchelor was a vital part of the Kyneton Brass Band for 27 years, and contributed significantly to the musical growth of many Sacred Heart students. Jenny performed with the College’s Show Band on a number of occasions and will be missed terribly by the local music community. Our annual Music Trivia Night will take place Friday night, 5 May, starting at 7:00pm sharp in the Arthurson Atrium. This is traditionally a really fun night with a silent auction and plenty of games, jokes, musical facts and excellent prizes! Students are encouraged to assemble teams of between 3 and a maximum of 10 people per table. The secret to success at these nights is diversity within the team, so people of all ages and backgrounds are most welcome! Entry is only $10 per head, and there are excellent prizes up for grabs. Cheating is not only acceptable, it’s encouraged (disclaimer: conditions apply, bring lots of gold coins). All proceeds go towards Friends Of the Music Program which provides assistance toward scholarships for Music students. So, please join us – bring dinner, drinks and nibbles for a fantastic night, but we do start right on 7, so please be here by 6:45 to claim a good table! We will also have a Silent Auction on the night with some EXCELLENT items up for grabs! Information is available from www.tinyurl.com/musictrivia17.

‘Dare to Donate’ to Project Compassion 2017

The ‘Dare to Donate’ campaign is in full swing here at Sacred Heart and has been extended for a limited time. In order to raise funds for Caritas’ ‘Project Compassion’, students have been invited to come up with a possible dare they would like to see their teachers or a staff member do. Students are also asked to nominate a target amount of money they think they could raise in order for this dare to be fulfilled. A ‘Dare Day’ (when these dares will take place) will soon be announced and take place at the College. Watch this space for some exciting antics ahead! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has already generously donated money and time (apologies the thank you list below is longer than an Oscar night’s speech, but I promise not to give ‘Best Picture’ to the wrong film)! A big thank you to Jamie Walker for starring in a

promotional video for the ‘Dare to Donate’ campaign, reminiscent of a scene from the film ‘Love Actually’, which is garnering a lot of attention and publicity. Jamie is now considering a career in mime. Some other creative members of our community here at SHC, have even donated handmade items. Thank you to Brett Lefebvre for his beautiful coastal painting which was successfully auctioned off. Thank you as well, to Paula Thompson for knitting beanies currently on sale in the Staff room, which will undoubtedly come in handy on those cold, wintry Kyneton days when we are dreaming about being on the coast in Brett’s painting (and to Paula’s father for his understanding that he may receive his knitted jumper a bit later). Thanks also to Jodie Warner for donating tickets to ‘Shen Yun’. A special thank you goes out to homerooms 7C, 8C and 12D who have raised amazing amounts of money so far. Keep up the great effort! Last year, over $3000 was donated so it is our hope to raise the bar even higher this year. Of course, I cannot forget the outstanding efforts of the Mercy@Work team of staff and students who continuously give up their time to support such efforts. Without you, this wouldn’t be the success it is year after year.

Everyone’s generous donations will be used to empower some of our most vulnerable neighbours here in Australia and around the world to transform their communities. It is important more than ever to reflect on and act on the true message of the Easter period, which we have recently celebrated and to ‘love our neighbour’.

Our Geography students from Years 7 to 9 will be taking part in the 23rd annual Australian Geography Competition from 26 April – 9 May.

Nearly 60,000 students from around Australia have entered the Competition, which is joint initiative of the Australian Geography Teachers’ Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland. Competition coordinator, Bernard Fitzpatrick, said that the Competition gave teachers an opportunity to highlight geography in their schools and challenge their students. “In today’s society, geography is a vital subject that all young people should study. Understanding place and people, and the socio-economic and environmental interactions at local, regional, national and international levels is important to the economic and environmental future of Australia,” said Mr Fitzpatrick.

Students at SHC have historically done very well in the Australian Geography Competition, with several receiving distinctions in years gone by. It is fantastic that the College has allowed us to enter our students to participate again in 2017. The students will be completing the questions during their Geography classes over the coming week. “Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities.” This quote, by staunch library advocate. R. David Lankes, demonstrates precisely why the Catherine McAuley Library is such a vibrant hub in the rich life on offer at Sacred Heart College.

Not only do we have a strong collection that caters for the academic and personal needs of students and staff, and provide a vast range of information services, but most importantly, we constantly work at building and developing a strong community. Library staff collaborate with teachers to co-create lessons that enhance the learning experiences of students, and the library heaves at lunchtimes with students talking, enjoying and using the space. MakerSpace activities begin in Week Two this term and all students are invited to the library to participate and engage in the fun activities on offer. If you have any suggestions as to how the library can continue to build its community we’d love to hear from you!

Debutante Ball 2017 - Hayley Stewart 11B

On Saturday 25 March the Year 11 Debutante Ball took place at Melrose Reception Centre. 45 couples arrived in fancy limos with the girls hair and makeup done, early on the Saturday afternoon. We all felt like celebrities walking out of the limos with photographers and people watching us as they walked past.

The receiving party was Ms Mortimer and special guests Mr and Mrs Robert and Pam Ingils. Only having seven weeks leading up to the night of the Ball we were

all grateful for having two wonderful teachers Rob Ingils and Debbie Scarlett. Without these amazing teachers we would still be tripping over our own feet. Page Boy, Jacob Floriani, and Flower Girl, Angelique Doherty, were amazing and learnt the dances in only a short amount of time and looked stunning. The Year 11 students are very thankful to everyone who attended the Debutante Ball and to the people who made this wonderful night happen. I’m sure everyone would want to relive this night over and over again!

Mock Interviews 2017 During the holidays, all Year 10 students and families will have received an email letter outlining the Mock Interview Program, including a list of participating businesses and professionals who are offering Mock Positions to our students. This Thursday, the students will have the opportunity to select a position from the list and once their job position is confirmed, the application and resume writing process will begin in Industry and Enterprise. Should your child be away on sign up day, they will need to see their Industry and Enterprise teacher or send an email with their job selection request. 1. LA TROBE UNIVERSITY NEWS – The Bachelor of Biomedicine is the new

name for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science course, commencing at La Trobe University in 2018. It has a new stream in Human Physiology and

Anatomy, offering additional pathways for students. By studying this degree, students can gain the skills and knowledge required for entry into La Trobe postgraduate Allied

Health courses such as physiotherapy, dietetics, prosthetics and orthotics, orthoptics and speech pathology. Priority places (Melbourne only) will be offered to graduates in La Trobe’s Physiotherapy postgraduate course and other La Trobe Allied Health postgraduate courses mentioned here.

Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Bendigo) A new degree offered in Bendigo with largely the same subjects as the Melbourne B. Biomedicine.

Health Sciences – new Melbourne majors in sports counselling and athlete welfare, and in health promotion; new Bendigo majors are public health, health promotion, sports counselling and athlete welfare, rehabilitation counselling; priority places for B. Health Sciences (Anatomy and Physiology) graduates in La Trobe physiotherapy postgraduate courses and other allied health postgraduate courses.

I-ASPIRE is a new program designed to empower indigenous high school students to qualify for La Trobe’s Aspire early admissions program. For the first time this year 100 indigenous students enrolled to study at La Trobe, and the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander academics has increased to seven. The I-aspire program will include an academic boot camp to help indigenous students learn about university life, a cultural immersion program with community elders providing support, and one-on-one mentoring with senior peers.

2. AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY (ACU) NEWS –

THE NEW BACHELOR OF PHYSIOTHERAPY at ACU’s Ballarat Campus welcomed its first cohort of students in Semester 1, 2017. There has been excitement over the new cutting-

edge facilities, which includes anatomy wet laboratories and physiotherapy teaching laboratories. NOTE:

Other universities offering physiotherapy are Charles Sturt at Albury-Wodonga, La Trobe, Melbourne and Monash.

ACU will commence its BACHELOR OF NUTRITION SCIENCE in 2018 at its Melbourne campus. This course will strengthen ACU’s reputation of offering quality allied health education, and attract a lively cohort of aspiring nutritionists. In Australia, nutrition and exercise are rapidly becoming the most recognised, modifiable lifestyle factors linked with disease prevention. Nutritionists have a key role in community and public health, and they can offer nutrition advice to improve the wellbeing of individuals, communities, and populations. They can work as nutrition consultants, public health and health promotion officers, and it the food science and technology industries. The program will also be a pathway for postgraduate studies in dietetics.

Geography has long been taught at University, but recently the school of Geography has

embarked on a new venture with the launch of ‘the School of Geography’ within the Faculty of Science. This follows its move into this faculty in 2015, and in recognition of

the importance of geography’s capacity to work in and across both the social and natural sciences. Students can undertake a geography major as part of a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts and then advance onto various Masters and PhD programs. Current areas of research include international development, urbanisation, biogeography and earth surface processes, with an overarching interest in environmental change.
