WIN - WIN

Agreements are beneficial to all

Mutually satisfying

Calls for courage and consideration

WIN - LOSE

Authoritarian approach - If I must win you lose. Prone to use position, power, possessions or personality to get their way Does not work in relationships Works in low trust environment or in a truly competitive situation like a game

LOSE-WIN

Let others get their way always

Surrenders and is passive only to gain acceptance of others

Are willing to be exploited

Display psychosomatic illness/disproportionate irritation and rage

LOSE- LOSE

When two win-lose people get together the result is vindictiveness

Both destroy each other

Murder is suicide

Contingency Approach

In a game use Win - Lose

In relationships use Lose - Win (but not always)

In Most Situations Win - Win works best

Combination of approach and avoidance techniques work in all situations 

AVOIDANCE TECHNIQUES

RESIGNATION

Extreme avoidance where conflict is seen as part of reality arising out of vested, closed, unreasonable out group

Hope for the best

Fatalistic

DIFFUSION

Aim is to subside negative emotions by buying time, appealing to rationale, and taking help of significant others

The out group is seen as open and interested in peace

APPEASEMENT

Bribe, concessions and sops are given to the other party to break resistance

CONFRONTAION

Win-Lose orientation

Attack-counter attack sequence

Blocking

Coercion

Manipulation

Used when out group is seen as unreasonable and not interested in peace

COMPROMISE 

Bargaining to share gains when out group is seen as interested though closed

ARBITRATION

Out group is belligerent yet not completely closed -Third party is brought in to ‘Award’ peace.

NEGOTIATIONS

The most satisfactory solutions emerges when both jointly confront the problem and explore solutions

EFFECTIVE NEGOTIATIONS

Cost analysis of status quo

Benefits of Win-Win agreement

Minimum negative emotions and maximum positive feelings by depersonalizing

Use of neutral language, facts,problem focus.

Reduces time pressure

Increases proximity and interaction

Creative Win-Win solutions emerge
