Nick Fewings, Managing Director
As an international award-winning conference speaker, I have spoken and continue to speak at many conferences.

I personally, have experienced:
The Good
The Bad
and The Ugly
www.ngagementworks.com
So, I undertook a survey of conference organisers and delegates, asking them one
question.
www.ngagementworks.com
“What are the key attributes that you wish to see in a
conference speaker?”
The replies received were many from all around the world. They were from;

Chief Executives through to people who had just joined organisations.
Across different industries sectors.
Public, private and charitable status organisations.
From the responses, themes began to emerge which I have summarised to help both conference organisers
and those who have been invited to speak at a conference.

The following slides summarise the 7 Do’s and 1 Don’t of conference speaking, based on my experiences and, as fed back by the most important people of all;
THE DELEGATESTHE DELEGATES
#1. Be Yourself
www.ngagementworks.com
It’s the best person you can be! If you aren’t authentic, the audience will pick it up almost
immediately.
#2. Be Credible
www.ngagementworks.com
Speak on a topic you are both knowledgeable and
passionate about.
#3. Be Entertaining
www.ngagementworks.com
We all like to laugh so throw in a funny anecdote or observation,
your audience will love it.
#4. Be Relevant
www.ngagementworks.com
Always put yourself in the shoes of the
audience and say to yourself “If I sat
through this presentation, would
I get something positive from it?”
#5. Be Flexible
www.ngagementworks.com
Have a back-up plan re travel, room-
layout & presentation. Plan
for the unexpected, travel delays, lack of power, no projection
equipment.
#6. Be In The Zone
www.ngagementworks.com
Get to the venue early and visualise yourself speaking in front of a full auditorium.
Visualisation is a proven technique to help overcome nerves and deliver a great speech.
#7. Be Timely
www.ngagementworks.com
Keep to time, you owe it to the audience and also to the next presenter if there are a number of
people speaking.
And, the most important don’t of them all…

#1. Don’t Sell
www.ngagementworks.com
If your speech or presentation is a
marketing platform for your services, don’t sell to
the audience. If you’ve followed the Do’s, new clients will come to you without you including a hard-nosed sales pitch.
