What does innovation mean?

Do you define yourself as an innovative tech user or tech

savvy?

If so, what features do you consider make part of innovation

in terms of technology?

The machine was not a mediational means between

teacher and student, but a way

to interchange information.

The use of the computer The use of the computer was NOT on teaching the was NOT on teaching the language, but USING THE language, but USING THE LANGUAGE in front of the LANGUAGE in front of the

computercomputer.

He defined CALL as restricted ( behavioristic

as Warshauer stated), open and integrated. A

socio-cultural dimension is integrated.

Higgins (1988)Higgins (1988)

According to Higgins, a computer was understood as a teacher-player, controlling

and guiding students through different tasks. The machine was not a mediational means between teacher and student, but an actor

to exchange information. (Leffa, 2009)

Warshauer (1996)Warshauer (1996)

Bax (2003)He defined CALL as restricted ( behavioristic as Warshauer stated), open and integrated. Bax considered the idea of behaviorism and also

extended boundaries including more and new activities considering for example the role of the

teacher. This idea explains the principle of integration in terms of socio-cultural aspects,

emphasizing not in the ability to integrate “tools” but to be integrated.

From the image of an object to the transformation of digital users,

digital and social networks, interactive learners and interacting

teachers, . (Leffa, 2009)

In the early days of CALL, the emphasis was on the individual and consequently on individualized learning. Later, with the

introduction of the Internet and the socio-cultural perspective on education, the

emphasis moved to the community and collaborative learning, (Leffa, 2009).

Considering that computers facilitate connection between individuals and communities, the trend, in terms of research and teaching, is to move

beyond individual and the community to focus on the individual into society and society into the individual, (Leffa, 2009)

According to (Leffa, 2009), for a language student to be part of a foreign language

community, this student must appropriate the language and the values that constitute this

community.

The online or digital community involves interaction between members and enhance the

construction of socio-cultural dimensions.

From a socio-cultural perspective CALL integrates and involves other individuals for constructing a learning community. Besides, CALL also includes all possible

resources for language teaching and language learning, (Leffa, 2009)

It might explain why different types of e-learning are emerging nowadays. Trends like e-learning, open

learning, blended learning and so on…
