Columbus Engineer Franklin County Chapter A chapter chartered by the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers.
P.O. Box 69
Reynoldsburg, OH 43068-0069
President’s Message By Benjamin Brown, P.E.
– FCC President
I certainly hope everyone enjoyed celebrating the
activities associated with National Engineer’s Week,
February 18th through 24th. At the Central Ohio
Engineers Week luncheon, keynote speakers Dr.
Shaaban Abdallah from the
University of Cincinnati and Thea
Walsh from MORPC, spoke
about the HyperLoop Technol-
ogy and how central Ohio is
using this technology as a
future means of transportation.
On March 21st at LaScala our presentation shall
feature Kevin Fiant, P.E. from ODOT District 6 and
Lori Duguid, P.E., PTOE speaking about
Autonomous Vehicles and the design build projects
that installed fiber along the US 33 SMART
MOBILITY Corridor from Honda/OSU
Transportation Research Center in East Liberty to the
Metro Data Center in Dublin. It will be great to learn
more about how ODOT is teaming with partners to
invest and deploy a comprehensive technology plan
for the future. I look forward to seeing you at the
next luncheon!
This month we are also looking for volunteers for the
chapter’s Science Day to help with judging science
projects. The District Science Fair for high school
students is scheduled for March 16th at Columbus
State Community College. First place winner will
receive a cash prize of $150, $100 to second and $50
to third place. If you are interested in helping, please
contact me or the chapter’s Science Day Chairman,
Yogesh Rege, P.E; yogesh.rege@terracon.com.
FCC Auxiliary March Meeting The Auxiliary to the Franklin County Chapter of
OSPE will meet for a noon luncheon on Tuesday,
March 19, 2019 in a private dining room at Rusty

Title: “The Road to a Connected Corridor – US 33”
Synopsis: According to the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
implementation of connected vehicle technology
could reduce crashes by 80%. What are the
challenges that come with creating connected
infrastructure? The 33 Smart Mobility Corridor is
blazing a new trail on the road to becoming a
connected corridor. NW 33 Innovation Corridor
Council of Governments was awarded a $6 million
USDOT Advanced Transportation Congestion
Management Technologies Deployment
(ATCMTD) grant to implement connected vehicle
technologies along a 35-mile section of US 33
between the City of Dublin and City of Marysville
near Columbus, Ohio. The corridor connects two
nodes of automotive research: the Transportation
Research Center (TRC) and Smart Columbus and
includes multiple public and private partners. The
US 33 corridor will offer a unique opportunity to
deploy and test smart vehicle technology in various
settings, including; urban, suburban, and rural and
roadway types, including; local, arterial, and
collector streets and multi-lane divided highway
ramps. The project includes the installation of 61
dedicated short-range communication (DSRC)
devices along US 33 with another 32 installed at
traffic signals within the Cities of Marysville and
Dublin, equipping between 600 and 1,200 vehicles
with connected vehicle technology, developing V2I
applications, and developing a connected vehicle
environment to manage the data flows and system.
An initial pilot of Signal Phasing and Timing was
deployed across six signalized intersections within
the two cities in January. This session will provide
an overview of the project, with a special focus on
the lessons learned so far during the implementation.
Will close presentation taking some time to discuss
what we envision being needed from an
education/training standpoint for current and future
engineers to be better positioned for jobs related to
CV/AV.

SPE @OSU
by Madison Lubman
The student chapter is continuing to strive to create
new efforts to recruit and retain members while
informing them about the Franklin County Chapter.
This past month we had a table at the student
involvement fair to gain more members. We had a
few members volunteer for MATHCOUNTS and
found it a very rewarding experience.
At the end of February, the student chapter and the
Franklin County Chapter are having a membership
drive at Varsity Inn to promote the benefits of
becoming a member of NSPE. If you would like to
be more involved with the student chapter or have
any ideas, please reach out to Madison Lubman at
