What  is  a  Good  Colour?

Colour  Affects  17th  April  2013

The  first  thing  we  need  to  recognise  is  that…

There  is  no  such  thing  as  a  good  colour

Colour  Affects  17th  April  2013

Nor,  for  that  matter,  a  bad  colour

The  Basic  Tenets  Of  The  Colour  Affects  System

Colour  Affects  17th  April  2013

•  The  psychological  effects  of  colour  are  universal.

•  Each  main  hue  affects  distinct  psychological  modes

•  Different  versions  of  the  same  hue  have  different  affects  within  the  hue’s  mode

•  Every  shade,  tone  or  tint  can  be  classified  into  one  of  four  colour  groups.

•  Every  colour  will  naturally  harmonise  with  every  other  colour  in  the  same  group.  Colours  from  different  groups  never  truly  will.

•  All  humanity  can  be  classified  into  one  of  four  personality  types.

•  Each  personality  type  has  a  natural  affinity  with  one  colour  group.

•  Response  to  colour  schemes  is  influenced  by  personality  type.

Have  we  answered  the  question    “What  is  a  Good  Colour?”

Yes…  there  is  only  one    answer,  whenever  this  question  is  asked:

“It  depends”

Colour  Affects  17th  April  2013

If…  …  you  are  in  the  field  of  colour  management,  a  good  colour  is  unmistakeable:

 It  is

A  perfect,  accurate  match

Colourfast

Consistent

Issues  of  personal  taste  and  subjective  opinion  are  not  relevant  in  this  situation

Colour  Affects  17th  April  2013

However…

In  the  world  of  Colour  Psychology,  those  issues  are  highly  relevant!

A  good  colour  does  not  exist  in  isolation  -‐  like  a  musical  note,  it  is  in  combination  that  it  evokes    emotional  response.

Colour  Affects  17th  April  2013

There  are  many  good  colour  combinations

Good  colour  combinations  are  those  :    That  are  positively  harmonised  versions  of  the  most  appropriate  hues  to  capture  and  express  the  proposition    That  present  a  balance  between  hues  (complementary  hues  work  well  in  this  regard)    That  a  very  great  majority  of  people  agree  are  in  harmony
