Wells Fargo and Company was founded in

New York in 1852 to ship and deliver gold, mail,

and valuables. The Erie Railroad brought these

things from all over America to the Wells Fargo

depot in Jersey City, New Jersey. At the depot,

shipments were sorted and loaded onto horse-

drawn wagons, then the ferry boats carried the

horses and the wagons across the Hudson River

to New York City. There, the horses made their

deliveries, and picked up packages and shipments

to be brought back to the depot, sorted, and

shipped out.
