Motives…• The Europeans had good motives

for leaving Europe.

• What is a motive?– A reason for doing something

Persecution…• Many Europeans left because of

persecution

• What is persecution?– Mistreatment of a group based on

something that makes them different than most others (race, religion, gender…)

Three Countries…Three New Settlements

• France• Spain• England

New Spain• The Spanish settled in the

Southwest of the United States, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands

• MOTIVE - Wanted to get gold, slaves for plantations, and sugar plantations

New Spain, Cont.• King of Spain was in

charge of Spanish lands

• Conquistadors (Spanish soldiers) and missionaries were the main groups that came to settle America

New France• The French settled in all of Canada,

near the St. Lawrence River, around the Great Lakes, and west of the Mississippi.

• The capitol was Quebec in Canada.

was through the fur trade
