SOUTH AFRICA: AESHM
STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM
The AESHM South Africa
Summer Study Abroad Program is a
two-week (14-16 days) program that
provides students an opportunity to
travel to a developing part of the
world to experience different cul-
tures, broaden knowledge of fashion,
retail, hospitality, and tourism industries,
engage in service learning, and collabo-
rate with students from the Department
of Consumer Sciences, University of Pre-
toria.
For ISU student teachers, the new international teach-
ing location in Cuenca, Ecuador has a bilingual focus and a rep-
utation for high-quality programming. This schools unique mis-
sion of focusing on cultural sharing, while increasing language
proficiency in both Spanish and English. It will present several
great opportunities for ISU pre-service teachers from the ele-
mentary (SOE), ECE (HDFS) and several of the secondary teach-
ing programs offered here at ISU, in LAS. This Cuenca, EC site
will empower students to bring elements of their unique bicul-
tural teaching experience, in-
cluding an expanded global
awareness, into their future
classrooms in Iowa or else-
where in the U.S.

NEW ONLINE APPLICATION PROCESS
SPRING 2014 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
The new year brought in a new online applications! The Office of International
Programs is proud to announce that the scholarship application form is now avail-
able online! Applying for scholarships is even easier for students!
Soonchunhyang (SCH) University is widely acknowledged as one of
the best universities in Korea. Semester exchange programs will follow the
Korean academic semester calendar: early March through mid-June for the
spring semester and late August through mid-December for the fall semes-
ter. Students will be enrolled in 18-19 credits at Soonchunhyang, including
a 6-credit internship as a “Cultural and Language Ambassador”. Ambassa-
dors will facilitate group meetings, language and cultural exchanges, and
team-oriented activities. For their services, participants are offered gener-
ous financial benefits from the university.
This fall the College of Human Sciences
sent two students to South Korea for our first
ever student exchange, Jordan Aust and
Ariana Seaman. The ladies live in an apart-
ment style suite with 4 other Korean students.
Jordan told us: “I have loved getting to know
them. The girls in my suite are great! They love
helping me with my Korean homework and teaching me phrases that the
teacher typically do not teach. They told me yesterday that my "American"
accent when I speak in Korean is getting less evident! “
The students take 3 predetermined class and choose 2 elective
courses. The 3 required courses are Korean Writing, Korean Speaking and a
Cultural Internship Discussion. From business to education, students have
many options to choose from for their elective courses
On the weekend, they are busy with field trip programs hosted by
SCH. Each suite at the university dormitory can summit a proposal for a
weekend trip. Then 12 proposals will be chosen, and the university will pay
80,000 won (approximately
1,000 won is 1 US dollar) per
person to go on this weekend
trip.
Overall, we have only
heard amazing stories for the
ladies and their experience on
this program.

“While in Korea I've had a lot of time to reflect on home .... I have a new perspective on America and foreigners traveling to America. … It made me start to think about the internationals at Iowa State and how often they actually are able to leave campus and head to some-where like Des Moines, since there is no public transportation past Ames. I think when I get back I will offer my international friends a ride to Des Moines or elsewhere if they need one! “ - Jordan Aust

held its 2nd college study abroad fair to
showcase programs and opportunities.
There was a wonderful turnout and, thanks
to all the faculty and staff representations
and student volunteers. This event could
definitely be considered a success!
The purpose of this open house was
to give students a glimpse of the study
abroad opportunities that may be available
to them. Attendees were able to find resources, ask ques-
tions, or simply get ideas for the future. Faculty and staff
had set up interesting booths and displays showcasing a
study abroad program . Students and staff enjoyed cook-
ies, fruit, hot apple cider, and coffee while browsing and
connecting. Students also entered to win reimbursement
for the cost of a new passport. Two lucky winners, with
