Description of Assessment
SBA includes two types of tasks that are both taken online:
❏ Computer Adaptive Test for ELA & Math❏ Short-answer, multiple-choice questions and interactive test items❏ Questions adjust to each student’s ability
❏ Performance Task for Math❏ Longer multi-step questions applied to a complex task❏ Students solve real-world problems❏ Measures depth of understanding of concepts and complex
analysis
SBA: Purposes of the Assessment
❏ Provides an annual snapshot of student achievement in comparison to the standards
❏ Provides valid, reliable and fair measures of students’ progress and growth over time
❏ Provides assessment data that is used, along with other assessment types, when making educational decisions about specific students
SBA: Purposes of the AssessmentNot Useful As:❏ A sole measure of student achievement, program evaluation or school,
district, and state accountability systems❏ The sole source of guidance for curriculum or instruction
❏ A substitute for a wide variety of other relevant ways to assess student learning, such as:
❏ classroom assessments❏ teacher observations❏ student work portfolios❏ universal screening❏ frequent progress monitoring❏ detailed diagnostic assessment or evaluation
SBA Performance Categories and Scale Scores
❏ Students receive a “performance category” for each area of knowledge and skills within a subject
❏ This provides a general indication of students’ strengths and weaknesses within each subject area
❏ The Smarter Balanced overall scale scores fall along a continuous vertical scale (from approximately 2000 to 3000), these scores can be used to illustrate students’ current level of achievement and their growth over time when compared across grade levels
SBA Achievement Levels
Four Achievement Levels
❏ Level 1 = Does not meet the achievement standard
❏ Level 2 = Approaching the achievement standard
❏ Level 3 = Meets the achievement standard
❏ Level 4 = Exceeds the achievement standard
Sample Student Score Report for ELA
Lexile Level
New this year parents have been given a lexile level to help support them in finding books that are ‘just right’ for their child. In Darien we use a similar system, the Fountas and Pinnell leveling system that is based on letters.
Sample Student Score Report for Math
Quantile Level
For the first time parents have been given a quantile level. When parents look this number up, it will assist them in finding math activities that are at the ‘just right’ level for your child. More information about this is printed on the student score report.

Next Steps- Smarter Balanced Assessment
❏ Review at the district and school level to identify opportunities for program enhancement
❏ Students performing below goal have been identified by schools for review of SRBI support- use of Interim Assessments
❏ Review 2018-19 testing windows; 2018-19 (All elementary (G 3-5) and middle school (6-8) tested at the same time to reduce impact on instructional time
❏ Review Growth Rate (Percentage of students meeting their respective growth target) and Percentage of Target Achieved data (Average percentage of growth target achieved for all students) for matched cohort
❏ Review data with Curriculum Directors and Building-Based Leaders❏ School-based parent sessions

phenomenon.)It measures student performance against the Next Generation Science Standards, which includes practices and concepts in:
❏ Life Sciences❏ Physical Sciences❏ Earth and Space Sciences
Next Generation Science Assessment: Updates
❏ Preliminary scores have been released, but official results, as well as
individual student reports will not be released until later in October
❏ Scores will be our first set of benchmark data
❏ Scores cannot be compared against CMT or CAPT
