CATEGORIES OF DRUGS

Depressants analgesics:-

Ordinary pain killers & narcotics

ORDINARY PAIN KILLERS Brufen Panadol Asprin

They account for more deaths than all the narcotics combined because of availability.

NARCOTICS Mainly refers to the products of the opium tree.

Heroine, Morphine, Codeine Methadone, Dipipanone etc.

THEY CREATE EUPHORIA BY DEPRESSING THE CNS.

HYPNOTICS AND SEDATIVES They reduce tension and induce sleep by

depressing the CNS in small amounts.

Example include: AntidepressantsAlcohol MandraxGlue etcIn large amounts they cause Stupor,

Coma and Death.

STIMULANTS Drug that enhance Elertness and

Energy, cause Euphoria and reduce Sleep and Appetite.

Cocaine Khat Nicotine Amphetamines

Euphoria is quickly followed by Depression.

HALLUCINOGENS They Distort Perception and hence Generate Euphoria. However they can cause terror.

Example is LSD. (LYSERGIC ACID DIETHYLAMIDE) and its many Synthetic and Natural Preparations.

PSYCHEDELICS They produce:-Perceptual Distortion Thought Distortion Emotional Distortion Creative Problem Solving Ego Boundary Distortion Spirituality

EFFECT OF DRUG ABUSE

Immediate direct action of the drug on tissues Long term direct action of the drug Direct reaction of the sudden withdrawal of the drug Indirect effect of the ion of the drug Effects of methods of use.

DRUGS ABUSED IN UON Exploratory research indicates that the

following drugs are abused in UON.Alcohol – some rooms might be pubs Cannabis – peddling and use has

penetrated halls ( both genders)Khat, Nicotine, heroine, cocaine,

cocktails Drug addiction and abuse coexists with

sex addiction and sex trade.

DRUGS ABUSED IN NAIROBI Exploratory research indicates

serious abuse of Alcohol ( Chang’aa, Bathura, Marwa & Methanol)

Nicotine (shisha), Khat, heroine, cocaine, “ Rohibno,” CANNABIS, sleeping pills and antidepressants in most neighbourhood.

Drug abuse coexists with sex addiction and sex trade.

SOURCE OF ADDICTIVE DISORDERS

CODEPENDENCY SYNDROME A disease of self personhood and

arrested identity formation First observed in children and

spouses of alcoholics who behaved like alcoholics yet they were teetotallers.

Its observed in people living with chronically ill people and recovering addicts.

Where love is denied A state of continuous oppression and

brutality ( Dictatorship, double binds)

OVERCOMING CODEPENDENCY Practice detachment Avoid being reactionary Set yourself and others free Remove the victim/ don’t give

THE DONKEY SYNDROME (LSE)Overbearing, angry, tired, burnt

outDirty and abandoned Down cast and whipped Bound and sick Kicks and dramatizes anger Crying often and difficult to

of worth perfectionism, religion addicts, workaholics unavailable to give love.

Child Abuse Families with chronically ill
