CLYDEVIEW ACADEMY
CHRISTMAS CARD 2018
DESIGNED BY LOGAN MOORE
2018 has been a brilliant year for Clydeview Academy. In every area of the school our
students enjoy tremendous success. On a day to day basis students are congratulated for their
behaviour, attendance, timekeeping and upholding our school values. For many, further
success has come through National events and once again our success in SQA National
examinations is the envy of many schools.
A particular mention must go to former student Jonathan Marshall who this year was voted
SQA candidate of the year. Well done to Jonathan and to everyone who has supported his
progress throughout his six years at Clydeview Academy.
I do hope our young people enjoy their last week of term and the wide variety of activities
and events which they can join in, including our Christmas Cracker, Senior Dance and final day
concert.
I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable festive period and I look forward to welcoming
you back to Clydeview for a wonderful 2019.
FRIDAY 21ST
DECEMBER
ARRANGEMENTS
Please note the
following arrangements
fo r F r id ay 2 1 s t
D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 8 .
School will start as
normal at 8.50am.
Lunchtime will be from
12.30pm-1.30pm with
an early dismissal at
2.30pm.
Our creative S3 Administration and IT
students were given a brief to create a poster
and ticket for the Gourock Schools and
Churches Together Community Concert held
last month. The theme this year was the
commemoration of the end of WW1 and this
was incorporated into their designs.
The standard of entries this year was particularly high and Mr Todd had a very hard job choosing a
winner. In recognition of this, each class had one ticket and one poster winner to form a short list.
After much deliberation, one for each category was selected as overall winner.
Congratulations to Emily Watson and Grace Thomson on their winning entries which were
reproduced and then distributed to all schools and churches in the area. Well done, also, to Orla
McAllister, Matthew Orr and Trudie Phelan who were class winners and worthy runners-up.
Congratulations to our Higher Business
Management students who have topped the leader
board in the qualifying rounds of the Investment
Challenge. A team of 8 are now going on to represent
Clydeview Academy in the area finals on Thursday 13th
December at the BNP Paribas Bank offices in Glasgow.
We wish Jamie, Suleman, Lewis, Aidan, Sophie,
Harvey, Cara and Carly all the best as they compete
against 5 other schools.
Business Studies Department
Developing the Young Workforce – Higher Business
Management
The department was delighted to welcome David Lannigan from BNP
Paribas Bank who came to speak to both classes about his career in
the Financial Services sector. David outlined the different roles on
offer and the type of work carried out within his department. Asked
about what the hardest part of his job was, he felt it was managing
the 84 staff he had working under him - surprisingly not overseeing
deals worth billions of pounds in the currency exchange market!
His presentation was immediately
followed by a chance for our students
to compete in the Global Investment
Challenge. With a fund of £400,000
each, teams of two took on the roles of
Media and Investment Analysts to react
to breaking news stories and determine
which businesses were affected. The aim
was to increase the value of their share
portfolio. The top three schools in the
West of Scotland will go forward to the
finals in December – this was announced
on Friday 7th December.
BUSINESS STUDIES NEWS UPDATES
We had a wonderful afternoon on Wednesday 12 December when our S4 YPI Finalists gave fantastic
presentations to try to win £3000 for their chosen charity. All of the presentations were of the highest
standard and the winner was the team from 4D who presented on behalf of Inverclyde Women's
Aid. Well done to Ava Quigg, Rhea Gallagher, Laurie Struthers, Jo Hunter and Katie McGeachie. All of
the charity finalists will receive money for their chosen charities. Thank you to everyone for an excellent
afternoon.
YPI
STEM West Event – Monday 26th November 2018 at West College Scotland (Clydebank)
Twenty of our S3 pupils had a brilliant time at a recent STEM event held by West College Scotland in
Clydebank. Pupils were given the chance to hear from some of the best STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Maths) employers, such as the RAF, the NHS, BAE Systems and Catapult. Our pupils were
able to talk to employers about the range of different careers that are available through studying STEM
subjects. Some of the favourite hands on activities throughout the day included virtual welding and keyhole
surgery!
S1 Science Club
Our S1 Scientists have been working hard on developing their investigative skills through a range of exciting
activities, from flame tests to building rockets! The Science Department would like to say a massive thank
you to S2 pupils Duncan McColl and Ross McWilliam, who do a fantastic job of helping Miss Aitken out at
Science Club every week! Remember to keep an eye out on Twitter on our Clydeview Science page
@CA_ScienceDept.

S3 Crash Test Eggs
S3 Physics pupils have been learning about Newton’s Laws, and have been applying their knowledge of
this to design a car safety feature for BMW. With a budget of £15000, and a steep price list for parts, the
pupils did an excellent job of designing some innovative safety features to keep their egg safe.
Unfortunately, there were some casualties and not all of the eggs made it out in one piece, but one team
managed to smash the competition and kept their egg from cracking (and from falling out of the car!).
Congratulations to class 3P4’s winners – Aryan, Lewis, Harry and Adam!
Chemistry at Clydeview
So the countdown begins…Santa is fast approaching along with the joy and occasional stress of cooking
the Christmas dinner. Whether it’s a perfectly roasted turkey or crispy yet fluffy roast potatoes,
understanding the chemistry behind it can make all the difference. Next term the Higher chemistry pupils
will be able to explain what causes the meat to turn brown and if cooking the sprouts in water or butter
is best to make sure they retain that distinctive brussel sprout flavour. However, this term pupils will be
eager to use their knowledge from Unit 3 about atom economy and green chemistry to help maximise
the efficiency of the Christmas dinner ingredients and reduce waste as much as possible.
The N5 class have started learning about the molecules which make up oil (crude oil, not the edible
cooking oil for the vegetables). They will soon be moving on to learning about other organic molecules
such as carboxylic acids that are found in vinegar and some of the molecules which give cheeses like
parmesan their distinctive smell.
The Advanced Higher class have been enjoying some practical experiments too and will be hoping they
don’t get too carried away with Gravimetric Analysis and heat their turkey to a constant mass on
Christmas day in order to
work out how much water
it contained.
Merry Christmas from the
Chemistry Department and
happy studying!

YOUNG ENTERPRISE
On Tuesday 4th December, Clydeview Academy’s Young
Enterprise Team took part in a trade fair, hosted by intu
Braehead.
For the past 4 months, our team has been working tirelessly
to build our business which is now officially known as
‘Faodail Designs’. We focus largely on the preservation of
our environment and, with this goal in mind, we’ve
created handmade products such as keyrings, necklaces,
dream-catchers and a variety of candles. These were made
with materials collected locally, some donated and others
hand-picked, all based on our Scottish beaches
which we noticed were becoming severely neglect-
ed; this is our attempt to preserve their beauty and
potential!
The trade fair took place in the ‘Soar’ building in
Braehead, and the stands were situated outside the
ODEON cinema, on the second floor. Our team
were given a limited selling time during which our
company and stand were judged and open to the
public. This was an amazing opportunity to spread
the word about our company, as well as gaining
the chance to showcase what has been achieved so
far.
We are delighted to announce that we came runners up and couldn’t be more proud of each other and
thankful to those who’ve helped us reach this point!
The experience as a whole is one which we’ve learned from
and, above all else, enjoyed. We are eagerly awaiting the
future of our company and will welcome any new
challenges that lie ahead.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS
Congratulations to all the Clydeview pupils who have completed their DofE awards this year, at either
Bronze, Silver or Gold level!
Award Ceremony
The success of all Inverclyde Bronze and Silver participants was celebrated at the town hall back in
November, with certificates and badges presented in front of family, friends and invited guests. Presenting
the awards were Provost Martin Brennan and the Vice Lord-Lieutenant Peter McCarthy. Clydeview had
excellent representation on the night, with lots of proud recipients.
Former S6 pupil Jonathan Marshall was the joint winner of
the inaugural Wilma Bain Award, presented by Ruth Binks.
This award recognised Jonathan’s hard work and
commitment to completing his DofE Award.
A big thank you to everyone on the Inverclyde DofE Support
Group for organising the night.
DofE Class
Both S3 DofE classes have been working hard this
term to develop their first aid skills. They have
learned how to treat cuts with minor bleeding,
major bleeding, burns and broken bones. We
have been very lucky to have been joined by a
number of guest speakers in the class, including the school nurse Tracy and the Inverclyde HeartStart team.
As part of their HeartStart training, pupils learned key lifesaving skills including the recovery position, CPR
and how to use a defibrillator. Well done to all the pupils for their participation throughout the first aid unit
— they have developed key life skills.
In the New Year, pupils will be preparing for their expeditions by learning navigation and camp craft. Dates
for both the Practice expedition and Qualifying expedition will be available in early January for those in the
class and DofE participants in the wider school.
As ever, a massive thank you to Brian and Paddy for all of their hard work this year on
behalf of Inverclyde DofE and we hope that 2019 is just as successful as the last 12 months!
National 5 Mathematics
Visit the National 5 Mathematics section of the school website and you’ll see this page…
This is an essential destination for all of our National 5 learners – it contains practice, revision, notes, videos, past
papers, solutions…everything our learners need to help them prepare for success in National 5 Mathematics.
Please encourage our young people to use this resource on a regular basis – the work they do outside of the
classroom makes a big difference in final grades!
And if extra support is what learners are looking for then remember the Maths department runs a very popular
Saturday School (10 am – 1 pm) – look out for the dates on the home page of the school website.
Even more support is available at our after school supported study classes: 3 pm – 4 pm every Wednesday and
Thursday!
National Enterprising Maths Competition
In November, our S3 team (most other teams were S3 AND S4) competed at the National Enterprising Maths
Competition in the Glasgow Science Centre, representing Inverclyde after winning our local qualifying heat.
Teams from all over Scotland took part in a series of activities, where teamwork, reasoning, analysis and
application of problem skills were absolutely essential.
In an exciting, fun and challenging day, Clydeview eventually finished a very creditable 18th…out of 68 teams.
Well done to Bobby, Hannah, Sadie and Wladek, you did us proud!

WEATHER
Please note that the S4/5/6 Leavers
Ceremony has been moved to Tuesday
16th April 2019 at 7.00pm. This is to
accommodate the early start to SQA
exams which begin on Thursday 25th
April 2019.
LEAVERS CEREMONY
A number of pupils, ranging from S4-6, are involved in Inverclyde Athletic Club’s coaching project. This
programme provides the young people with essential skills, including leadership and interpersonal skills. It
gives them a chance to give back to the community and pass on their knowledge and love for athletics.
Taking part in this project requires a lot of commitment as the young coaches are expected to volunteer
over 30 hours a year. A couple of weeks ago, the pupils were nominated for an award in the 2018
Inverclyde Year of the Young Person Ceremony. The coaches were shortlisted in the top 3 of the Youth
Worker’s of the Year category and were very proud to achieve first prize, winning the award. The pupil’s
couldn't have done this without the great support of Inverclyde Athletics Club. A special thank you to
Janice Hendrie and Rhona Bushfield who have run this programme for many years giving young people a
chance to develop their skill set. The Clydeview pupils involved include:
S4 pupils: Lewis Hainey and Leah Cameron
S5 pupils: Zoe Renfrew, Josh Law and Ross Davidson
S6 pupils: Ben Nichol, Clara Pollock and Jennifer Lyne
Ex Pupils: Evie Semple, Robert Todd, Cameron Watson, Adam Hay and Samantha Dunning
VOLUNTEER COACHES WIN LOCAL AWARD!
In our October Newsletter we were
pleased to announce that Jonathan
Marshall from last year’s S6 had been
short listed for an SQA award. Well,
typical of Jonathan, not only did he
win an SQA award he also took
home the most prestigious individual
Pride of Worth Award after being
named School Candidate of the Year.
The judging panel recognised
Jonathan’s outstanding bravery and
determination to overcome significant
health challenges, and his outstanding
contribution to Clydeview Academy.
If you go on the SQA website you
will see a picture of Jonathan with his
award being presented by John
Swinney MSP, Deputy First Minister
and Cabinet Secretary for Education.
JONATHAN MARSHALL
We would respectfully ask that pupils are dropped off at the
designated area on the hill before the roundabout and the school
building.
Increasingly parents are driving around to the back of the school,
leading to unnecessary congestion, at a time when staff are trying to
access the car park.
There have been several incidents of dangerous driving on the part of
those who find that they are delayed waiting for staff to park, or by
the volume of traffic and who exceed the 10mph limit as they leave.
The safety of staff and pupils is paramount. Reducing the number of
vehicles at the back of the school would be beneficial to all.
USE OF CAR PARK AND DROP OFF
Our Higher Art & Design, Higher Photography and Advanced Higher Art & Design students have the
exciting opportunity of working with contemporary British artist Nathan Coley over the next few months.
Nathan Coley was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2007. He studied Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art
between 1985 and 1989 and currently works in Glasgow. Nathan is most well-known for his architectural
inspired works of art and in particular how architecture reflects and conditions the social environment. His
illuminated text pieces such as ‘There will be no Miracles Here’ which was displayed within Mount Stuarts
18th century landscaped garden in 2006 is one of many of his highly successful and world renowned works
of art.
Students were thrilled to meet with Nathan for the first time in November to discuss the project. Nathan
gave a presentation on his work and imparted some valuable insights from where his journey has taken
him from his school days to where he is today. Pupils then had the opportunity to ask questions before
ideas were explored for our joint project.
Pupils have been asked to consider what form a whole school work of art would take. Since Nathan’s visit
pupils have been working in groups investigating themes and considering concepts for a work of art that
will reflect our school values and the school community.
NATHAN COLEY ART PROJECT
Scholastic Book Fair
We had a very enthusiastic response to the Scholastic Book Fair
which was held in the Library between 16th and 22
nd November.
Pupils went along at lunchtimes and during library periods to
purchase books, stationery and posters, raising £264.20. Thanks to
Miss Stewart for hosting it and to all those who were keen to buy!
Katie McAuley (2D) recently
achieved the prestigious award of
Top Goal Scorer for Morton Girls’
Under 13s. The award ceremony
took place in Greenock Town Hall
on 30th November. Katie
managed to score an impressive
43 goals throughout the season.
Katie is now moving upwards and
onwards to the Under 15 team. It
is her dream to one day become a
professional footballer and having
managed to make such an
impression in her current position
as star striker, she has made an
amazing start on her journey
towards this aim. Well done on a
fantastic achievement Katie!
TOP GOAL SCORER
Another busy term for the Music
Department has flown by. As we
approach the Christmas break we
look back upon a number of
activities in the Department.
September saw the first of our
monthly visits to old age homes in
the area. A number of pupils went to
Alt-na-Craig to entertain the residents
in what is a very worth-while event
for both residents and pupils.
Our annual Jazz Night took place in
October and was, once again, a
really super evening of great
performances by our talented pupils.
Special mention is given to Duncan
McColl of S2 who, as the youngest and least experienced performer, bravely stood up and performed on his
clarinet with great aplomb.
November saw, for the first time, the Department host the Gourock Rotary Young Musicians’ Competition.
Clydeview was to be represented on the evening by Jade Bonnar (S6) and Roan Anderson (S5) on voice and
marimba respectively. Sadly however, a day or two before the competition, Roan’s arm was injured by a
suitcase (don’t ask) and he had to withdraw. Mr Todd was delighted to welcome the other schools to
Clydeview and he can be seen pictured here with all the competitors.
November also saw Clydeview host the Gourock Schools and Churches Together Afternoon Tea and Concert.
A packed hall was treated to a fabulous spread of sandwiches, tea and cakes laid on by the Home Economics
Department. Musical performances by the Jazz Band and various soloists, playing and singing music with a
WWI theme, went down a storm with the audience, especially the medley of Music Hall songs of the period,
where even Mr Todd joined in heartily.
December 10th saw our annual Christmas Concert take place in the Assembly Hall with at least 50 pupils taking
part. The Jazz band, Wind Orchestra, String Ensemble, Brass Group, Guitar Club, Girls’ Choir, Happy Choir and
several soloists took part in what was a fun evening and an extremely well-attended one. Mr Tait and his Brass
Group can be seen here practising for the show.
As we look forward to the New Year we will begin rehearsals for our Summer 2019 School Show … WE WILL
ROCK YOU – we hope to see you there! In the meantime, all of us in the Music Department wish you all the
compliments of the season.
MUSIC
Wednesday lunchtimes have been buzzing with the success of the S1 Art Club!
We are a group of five Advanced Higher Art pupils
who have been working with first years to
encourage their creativity and assist them along
the way.
So far, we’ve managed to achieve several
impressive pieces of work. These include
continuous line drawings and the observation of
the facial features and body via mini imaginative
exercises which were carried out through group
work.
December has brought the excitement of Christmas
and we’ve put our heads together to come up with a winter project. We will be working with the first
years over the next month to help them create their very own Christmas landscape! This will be something
that they can be proud of and will most definitely assist in the improvement of their already talented
skillset. We have taken into account feedback and we’re already planning new sessions for after Christmas
based on what has been previously requested.
As part of the sixth-year group, I can safely say that it is an experience we are all enjoying and learning
from. We believe that the collaboration between first and sixth years is an important bond and we hope
that the club will continue to develop and strengthen this connection.
New faces are always welcome but spaces are filling fast! So, if you are a first year and interested in art,
please come and join us at 13:45 every Wednesday lunchtime, in the art department. It would be great to
see you there!

Studio lighting workshop
As a young photographer, it’s all about getting experience. Our S5/6
Higher class were lucky enough to get some experience with one of
the best, through a studio lighting workshop with expert Richard
MacFarlane. Lighting is a key element to taking the perfect shot, so
the workshop was incredibly valuable in helping us to create a
professional folio, and further our photography skills outwith school.
Richard showed the class a range of lighting techniques to light our
shots in a more creative and experimental way, to achieve a different
atmosphere with every shot.
Although studio lighting was the main focus of the day, it was useful
to take advantage of Richards knowledge in the subject and have a
conversation with him about theme and the direction of our project. Personally I feel that I would
conduct a photoshoot entirely differently now than prior to Richard’s visit. He emphasised the
importance of varied photoshoots and changing a component of the picture each time, whether it be
composition, subject matter, lighting, viewpoint or an endless amount of different things.
Richard worked with each of us one-on-one as we set up a variety of different scenes and were able to
freely discuss our ideas and progress. This helped us to make improvements as the photoshoot continued
and become more creative, settling into our own style of photography. Our experience with Richard
was incredibly important in enabling us to further our key skills and improve every aspect of our
photography.
By Olivia Steele 6A
Richard Macfarlane helped me to achieve a back lit dramatic portrait for my photography project. We
went through lots of different methods of lighting before we got the shot I wanted. Through a process
of testing and fixing what was wrong, I got the dimly backlit portrait I wanted for my theme. In the end
the method that worked was a completely dark room and a flashgun light behind Lauren. I used a
phone torch to focus my camera and, when the room was completely dark, I fired the camera shutter
and at the same time the flash gun went off and this is the result.

This year’s 19 Higher Photography students
have just returned from Edinburgh, having
enjoyed a fabulous photo shoot day out in
the city right at the start of a beautiful
December. With glorious weather providing
warming winter light and strong shadows,
the photography students spent a very
productive day undertaking various
individualised photo shoots, capturing
hundreds of images that will support their
Higher submissions. Subject matter varied
from the secret life of toys, vacant spaces and
the beauty of the natural world — all
carefully composed and captured using the
techniques they have been studying in
school.
With a brief lunch stop at the Christmas
Market, and more photography work in the
afternoon, students where tired but very
happy on their return to school having
successfully achieved a large portion of their
practical photography. An opportunity to
visit the sights and sounds of Edinburgh at
such a wonderful time of year certainly did
not disappoint!

EDINBURGH TRIP 2018
Entries from this year’s Christmas card competition
were outstanding! S1 pupils enjoyed learning new
techniques in watercolour paint before designing
their creative ideas based on this year’s theme of
‘Christmas baubles’. Pupils further developed their
understanding of pattern and colour in this activity
and researched the impact Zentangle patterns can
have on their work. Winning designs were chosen by
Mr Todd.

Our Higher students were given the opportunity to
visit the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
Here, they were able to take part in a variety of
creative workshops including Fashion Snapshot, a
Photography session, Colour Texture Pattern with
Textile specialist Lucy Simpson and Costume Craft
with costume historian and dressmaker Meridith
Towne. This allowed students to experiment with a
wide range of materials such as silicone and fabric to
produce interesting samples. The students utilised the
chance to ask probing questions to the panel of
craftspeople from different creative industries. This
was a successful trip where the group were pushed
out of their comfort zones whilst learning new skills
and techniques.
FASHION AT THE MUSEUM

I was privileged to spend the weekend in London at
Central Saint Martins, which is one of the best
fashion Universities in the world. I participated in a
Fashion Design and Styling Course for 16-18 year
olds, along with 14 others from places including Los
Angeles, Chicago, China, Turkey, the Netherlands
and London. Being the only Scottish student on the
course was daunting at first but I very quickly made
friends with most of the girls and I would hope that
we keep in touch throughout our careers. I certainly
enjoyed my experience at CSM and learned a lot of
new information and techniques that I will continue
to work with. I was stunned to see that my work was
featured on Central Saint Martins Instagram page and
I will now go on to work on my portfolio for
applying to CSM and London College of Fashion.
A DAY AT CENTRAL ST MARTINS
Congratulations to the S2/3 Basketball & Girls Football teams who qualified for the West Games after a
successful league campaign last year. Both teams played against various local authority champions with the
Basketball Team earning 3rd place and the Girls Football Team earning 4
th place.
WEST DISTRICT GAMES: ON-X LINWOOD SEPTEMBER 2018
Clydeview Academy had various pupils from S1
through to S6 representing the school at this year’s
National Road Race event in Falkirk. Whilst no pupil
medalled on the day, the individuals put in a strong
performance, which they should be proud of as they
were competing against the best runners for their age
category in the country.
FALKIRK ROAD RACE 2018
Once again this year’s Active Girls Day was a massive
success seeing almost every girl from all year groups
getting involved in various activities delivered on the
day. All girls were given various options to get
involved which included: basketball, gymnastics, walk-
ing, football & fitness. After an activity of their choice
all girls finished with a joint year group Zumba ses-
sion. The day was met with great enthusiasm and
plans are already in place to make next year’s Active
Girls Day even better. A massive thank you to Miss
McKissick and her team for leading this event.
ACTIVE GIRLS DAY 2018
On Wednesday 14th November Clydeview Academy had 27 pupils representing the school from S1 through
to the Seniors in S6. The cross country was held at Parklea playing fields for the first time. With adverse
weather conditions making the running surface extremly difficult for the athletes. On the day there were
lots of pupils who medalled at this event, individually and as part of a team. Congratulations to everyone
who took part.
