2014-15CLUB PLANS 21
THEME 2014-15
Rotary is an organization that has something for everyone. Allover the world, in cities and towns, for well over a century,Rotarians have come together to serve. And in the years sinceRotary was founded, countless Rotarians and others havediscovered the joys of Rotary service, through Rotaract, Interact,Rotary Community Corps, Youth Exchange, and many otherprograms.
All of us are part of the family of Rotary. And we have all gainedso much from our Rotary service. We’ve made friends, helpedour communities, and made the world a better, safer, andhealthier place. We’ve become part of a truly internationalnetwork of volunteers, and we’ve learned how much we canachieve when we put our differences aside and work together.
Many of the ideas and values that we cherish in Rotary are notunique to Rotary. Perhaps the reason Rotary resonates so deeplywith me is that I find many traditional Chinese values reflected
in Rotary: values of service and responsibility, of respect for familyand for others.
It is not surprising, then, that the ideas of Confucius so oftenguide me in my Rotary service. To me, Confucius was the originalRotarian. More than two thousand years before Paul Harris wasborn, he said:
To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order; toput the nation in order, we must put the family in order; to put thefamily in order, we must first set our hearts right.
In Rotary, we set our hearts right by putting Service Above Self. And we recognize that in order to be ambitious in our service,
2014-15CLUB PLANS 22
we must first care for our own organization and expand our familyof Rotary.
In 2014-15, I will ask all of you to Light Up Rotary — by sharingour service, strengthening our clubs, and letting our light shinein our communities.
In this Rotary year, we will Light Up Rotary by reaching our goalof 1.3 million Rotarians, bringing in new members while workingto keep the members we have. To do this, we’ll need to approachmembership in new ways, and try new ideas. Hold a Rotary Dayto give your community a chance to learn more about Rotary.Remember that Rotary is a family and is for the family: Encourage
your spouse and other family members to consider joining, andreach out to Youth Exchange and Foundation alumni. Focus onyour own club, and look realistically at why members stay, andwhy they leave. What can you do to make being a Rotarian anappealing and attractive opportunity for busy professionals andthose with young families?
We will also Light Up Rotary — and make history — byeradicating polio. Polio eradication within the next few years isabsolutely realistic — if we keep up our momentum. So tell yourfriends, associates, and elected officials how critical it is that weEnd Polio Now. Donate to the PolioPlus Fund and encourageothers to do so as well. By meeting the newest challenge issuedby the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we can make our moneywork three times as hard. Be an active part of the greatest public-private health partnership in the history of the world, and sharein the pride when the job is finished.
In 2014-15, as we strengthen our clubs and Light Up Rotary inmore than 34,000 communities, our commitment and our servicewill light up the world.

Hosting a Rotary Day
Any club, big or small, can host a Rotary Day. Neighboring clubs can pool theirresources and cohost a Rotary Day event, and even entire districts can cometogether to host a large-scale Rotary Day.
Rotary Days can take any form, as long as they are fun and appealing to the non-Rotary public. Here are just a few possibilities:
Hold an outdoor picnic or barbecue
Host a sporting event or concert
 Organize a family fun run
Align the event with a public parade or festival
Sponsor an event at a museum, art gallery, or cultural center
Secure an auditorium or arena and plan a ticketed reception or buffet dinner
Tips for Rotary Day planners
Feature guests that will appeal to a non-Rotary audience. Consider inspirationalspeakers, celebrities, musicians, or other public figures.
If the event will offer food, keep it simple — for example, a barbecue buffetrather than a formal, sit-down meal.
Keep admission prices low. Approach local businesses to sponsor your event.
Make your event welcoming to families. Encourage members to bring theirspouses, children, and other relatives.
Avoid using Rotary jargon or referring to internal traditions; present Rotary asan enticing opportunity for prospective members to make new friends, exchangeideas, and take action to improve their local community and the world.
Highlight the work of ordinary Rotary members doing extraordinary humanitarianwork.
Consider including a hands-on service project as part of the event to give visitorsthe chance to see firsthand how Rotary benefits the community.
ROTARY DAY
2014-15CLUB PLANS 28
Recognize non-Rotary community members who embody Rotary’s serviceideals.
Seek coverage for the event in local news media.
Collect participants’ contact information and follow up within two weeks to invitethem to attend a club meeting or event.
