Hello again,
Covid-19 is still with us regretfully and as such current government restrictions do not allow indoor music events to take place. Yes, social distancing has been relaxed somewhat but still not to a degree that we can all resume enjoying our wonderful folk music together. The ‘Zoom’ online facility is though proving to be an excellent substitute for folk clubs with many of the club regulars (and some visitors) attending ‘the room’ and performing in song or word. Many just join and watch as well which is great. You will see the title ‘Zoom’ mentioned quite a few times as you read on.
I hope you have had a chance to peruse the Diary Dates and Advanced Dates pages before reading this ‘Chat’. If you have you will have seen the cautionary paragraphs I have started with at the top of each list. I refer to them again as follows: - Diary Dates & Advanced Dates pages: “The below information is published for reference only as I think we all anticipate it may be quite some time before folk music venues will be able to reopen and it is probable that most of the below mentioned planned events will not take place, at least this year. Most of the below venues have been marked as - ‘CLUB CLOSED until further notice’. The remainder have been marked ‘No update available’. When the situation changes and venues return to normal, it is essential that you first make contact with club organisers or venue managers to check out what the situation is before embarking on any travel plans. Telephone contact details can be found in the Club List published in this magazine and on the NWFFC website” - www.folknorthwest.co.uk
CLUBS:
After 40 years as the organiser at Rhyl, Jeff Blythin has decided to retire from organising things. Mike and Sheila Hawkins have taken his place. See the Club List for their contact details. “All the very best Jeff. Sit back, relax and enjoy your music”.
Linda Armstrong, organiser of Pear Tree Folk, has asked that the club be removed from this edition until further notice. This is due to her being hospitalized. We wish Linda a speedy recovery to rude health.
At Hungry Horse Acoustic we have been meeting every Thursday night and enjoying ‘Zoom’ folk nights. They are excellent and are going extremely well. Mel Barratt, our club “Jester in Chief” controls the buttons whilst I host the nights occasionally assisted by our great friends John and Carole Warburton. It was very nice to have Paul Walker and Karen Pfeiffer join us also to great effect.
John’s Diary Chat
Looking at our programme, from September onwards, the current uncertainty has caused me to cancel Jinski’s BIG Spot scheduled for the 3rd and The Houghton Weavers concert on the 10th September. The Weavers rescheduled date is - Thursday 29th April, (tbc). Also in danger of being cancelled are - Colin Henderson on 8th October and a number of Open Acoustic Nights. The Churchfitters regretfully have already had to cancel their 15th October booking. It is my plan to move Archie Fisher’s 12th October concert to 26th because of holidays. I am awaiting confirmation of this proposal from the agent. Split Level are still scheduled for the 3rd December and Merry Hell for the following Thursday. Please keep your eye on our website at - www.hungryhorseacoustic.com
At Dragon’s Breath - the club is closed until further notice but hopefully the programme in this edition shows 2 concert nights on the 6th and 27th October and on 10th November it is hoped that Fiddlestone will be able to return to the club. The Christmas Party is scheduled for 15th December. This club meets on a Tuesday evening via ‘Zoom’. I enjoyed reading Paul Reade’s - Skipton Folk Club - Lockdown article in the last edition and I hope you did too. Paul has sent the following sentiments to all and sundry – “At Skipton Folk Unplugged our love of music unites us all. Let’s hope these hard times will soon pass so we can raise the rafters once again. As Coope, Boys and Simpson would sing – “What we sing is what we are”. We look forward to welcoming friends old and new in the near future. Best wishes from the members of Skipton folk club. Singers, musicians, poets and all are always welcome” – www.skiptonfolkclub.co.uk
If you wish to know what is happening at Room at the Top then here is Mark Dowding's - ‘Straight from the Horses Mouth’ update. It is a very good read. “Our club is continuing with Zoom meetings at present. We call it - “Zoom at the Top". We’ve found that despite the minor inconvenience of wobbly sounding instruments which we’ve been able to mitigate to some degree by adjusting the settings and with some people having external microphones connected to their computers, the weekly meetings have been popular and have been appreciated by people who are on their own who have been able to meet and chat with people in the virtual world. As well as our locals, we’ve also had people attending from all over the country - West Sussex, Cornwall, Staffordshire, Ashton-under-Lyne, Wales, Ludlow, Cumbria and London - we’ve even had a visit from my sister in Connecticut when she had a day off work!
9
nights until we are allowed to resume. Sorry, we know that you all look forward to our Sundays, but in the interest of public health we feel safety is our top priority. When things are clearer we will update our club Facebook page and website”. www.wfaclub.wixsite.com/wallaseyfolkacoustic As I type these words I have just heard that this club will be commencing a ‘Zoom’ folk club on Sunday 2nd August. I am sure it will have gone off very well by the time you read this ‘Chat’.
Grace Woods at Frodsham has cancelled her programme until November. This means that the Brian Peters and Reg Meuross dates (11th Sept and 9th Oct) are cancelled. It is hoped that Cheshire’s very own – The Time Bandits, can perform on the 6th November and Dave Boulton on the 4th December.
A guest act club that books many performers I like very much is - Newcastle & Potteries Folk Song Club. I am talking about the likes of Quicksilver, Webber & Fentiman, Walker & Pfeiffer, Jez Lowe, Archie Fisher, Janet Russell, Robb Johnson and Enda Kenny. The organiser Jason Hill, will be hoping against hope that he as well does not have too large a rescheduling task in the New Year. You may have spotted that Chris Foster’s booking on the 11th September is cancelled and I am sure this will be one of the first on Simon’s list for a new date. Just in case you did not spot it, Robb Johnson has taken the place of Les Barker on the 11th of December.
At Pete Thompson’s Northwich - online club nights continue to be well supported. Pete says - “The club is continuing every week as a virtual folk club using the Zoom format. Our loyal members have continued to support us and we have varied the nights by inviting guest acts to join us for 30 to 45 minute spots, which is generally at 9pm. Our guests have included Graham Bellinger, Liz Simcock, Tom Browne & Ian Goodier, Chris Howarth, Andy Connally and Jackie Conn. We have been running the nights as free nights. Our plan is to continue with this format for the immediate future and see what happens as we move into autumn”.
Sue and Ged Todd at Swinton have no plans for the club presently. They are however getting their ‘fix of folk’ by visiting The Bothy for their Sunday night ‘Zoom experience’. Maghull is hoping to reopen some time in September but again the dreaded government restrictions may end up frustrating that plan. Paul Robinson however does have two concerts advertised. They are Tom Lewis on 20th October (ticket only) and The Pelican Babies (a mini-concert) on 3rd November. Into 2021 Daori Farrell is booked to appear on 13th April. The club Christmas Party may take place on a Friday or Saturday early in December.
We’ve been having a raffle at the end of the night - the winner getting a box of chocolates, which is delivered if they are in the locality or posted out if a distance away. It’s given us a sense of normality. I think I’ve mentioned previously that we start at 8.30pm once everybody’s been admitted from the ‘waiting room’ and I have my list of singers and audience ready. We start the evening and go round everybody whether they perform or not to see how they are and give them a chance to have a chat with everyone about things that they’ve been doing through the week. We’ve found that we get about 15 to17 performers, which is what we got when we were in the pub. With the extended amount of time taken to have a chat it gets to around 10pm when everybody’s had their turn with one item (song or poem) which we find is long enough for people to sit looking at a screen all night. We then have the raffle and bid everyone goodnight. The Red Lion pub is now open for customers but at the moment due to the Covid restrictions we are not able to meet in the room yet. Due to the fact that, like many clubs, most of our group are over 60, there will be a reluctance to go back too soon and I imagine we’ll be continuing with Zoom for the foreseeable future. I am in contact with the landlord of the pub to see how things are going and hopefully we will, eventually, be able to return. If anybody would like to join us on Zoom please contact me mark@markdowding.co.uk and I’ll send you the details. Our Facebook page is regularly updated with information and members add their own videos for people to watch. Search for ‘Room at the Top Folk Club’ on Facebook and request to join”.
Clive Pownceby at The Bothy advises me that he will be faced with the task of rescheduling a very large number of guest artists, (29 at the last count), if the pandemic persists into 2021. This long running folk club has guest acts booked almost every other week, so the task will be time-consuming and perhaps even arduous. “You can do it Clive. Best of luck”.
Tom Perry at Co-operative tells me that even though his pub venue has reopened it will be a while before his audiences meet to be entertained. He advises everyone to keep checking out the club Facebook page. He hopes that the wait will not be too long.
One of our favourite Wirral folk music venues is Wallasey Folk and Acoustic that meets every Sunday evening at the Inspire Coffee bar, at what was once St Luke’s church, Poulton and very close to the Mersey Tunnel exit onto the Wirral peninsular. The club attracts large attendances every Sunday night and the quality of acts is very good overall. Iain Paterson is in charge of the programme and he sends this message – “After consideration of the current situation with the Covid-19 virus, our club has decided to cancel club

At Biddulph Up in Arms a goodly programme of concerts is scheduled for October onwards, again subject to indoor music events being approved by ‘you know who’. Craig Pickering will be using two venues away from the normal pub venue. They are - St Lawrence’s Church and the Town Hall in Biddulph. Looking at the programme, two names jump off the page at me - Kris Drever - 20th March, (“My birthday by the way. It’s OK you don’t need to send me a card”), and Daphne’s Flight on 30th April.
Folk at the Barlow - Simon Blatchley has sent me an update of what is happening at his end, as follows: - “The news from Folk at the Barlow is not good, but I suppose no folk club has ‘good’ news at the moment. We have had to cancel the Edgworth Folk Festival on 2nd to 4th October 2020 but we are hoping to reconvene with the same guests on 1st to 3rd October 2021. As far as our autumn concerts are concerned we have had to cancel our live concerts for the rest of 2020. They are: 18th Sept - Jaywalkers/Dave & Helen Howard, 16th Oct - Chris While and Julie Matthews/Nick Mallion, 20th Nov - Granny’s Attic/Nick Dow, 18th Dec - Narthen/Daily Beggars. However we are currently in discussion with the artists to see if they are able to do a Zoom concert instead of a Live one. We have recently had a Zoom concert from Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer, which was extremely successful. We have not yet had any confirmations but interested people can get information from our new website” - https://www.folkatthebarlow.com This club has advanced bookings from 15th January to as far ahead as 17th December 2021. They are listed on the Advanced Dates pages. Concerts start at 8pm in the main hall of that lovely building, The Barlow in Edgworth. Support acts will be announced closer to the date of each concert. In August there is no concert but a ‘Summer Showcase’ featuring 15 minute sets from acts that have performed regularly at the monthly Singarounds.
Everyman - In the last edition Christine Jones hoped that September would see her club opening but that does no now look promising. She tells me - “It has been very strange not seeing our lovely friends at the club but we are in touch with quite a few. Fortunately everyone seems to be OK. We have, of course, had to cancel a few guests but hope we can reschedule them. One of the guests, Bob Conroy, was coming from New York to do the Spinners Legends last Liverpool concerts at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall Music Room. This has been moved to the 25th and 26th March 2021. We hope Bob can also do the club while in the UK. We will not be booking new guest acts as we will try and reschedule the other cancelled ones. Hopefully
we can at least have a Christmas Party but don’t hold your breath”.
Soundbox - Rose Price has compiled a very interesting list of quality performers with Nancy Kerr and James Fagan in September, Alden/Patterson & Dashwood + The Shackleton Trio and Thom Ashworth/Ben Walker in October. The renamed and rescheduled - ‘Soundbox Late Late Spring Thing’ takes place on 10th October and on the 20th November - ‘Swinging 60’s Night’. Check out the Diary Dates to find out who is on when. There also nine concerts booked from December into 2021.
Lake District Folk & Acoustic - Sandra and Steve Harrison report - “We have our proposed club dates below, with a change to what has previously been published and advertised. I'm sure we won't be the only club, which has had high profile performers cancel tours. Our December 11th club was supposed to be a big treat, with Belshazzar’s Feast but they have transferred now to December 2021. The remaining proposed 2020 dates are: 11th Sept - Singers & Musicians, 9th Oct - Caffrey, McGurk & Madge, 13th Nov - Singers & Musicians, 11th Dec - Singers & Musicians. All above dates are in the River Bar, Hawkshead Brewery, as usual. An extra date, a special Christmas show is, 6th Dec with Winter Union. This will be in Staveley Village Hall LA8 9LY”. Sandra and Steve continue - “When we had to cut short our winter holiday in our motorhome due to Coronavirus advancing across southern Europe, we became early converts to ‘Planet Zoom’! Recently arrived home from Andalucía, and in self-imposed quarantine towards the end of March, we were invited by Katie Cooper, (remember her from Muldoon's Picnic?); to attend Glasgow Singaround's Zoom meeting. It was lovely to connect with far distant folkies all in isolation. We embraced the conferencing platform recognising its shortcomings, but we enjoyed the opportunity to share live performances. Subsequently as well as family and friends birthday celebrations via Zoom we have attended folk clubs and festivals up and down the country, without starting the car! It's not the full, live music experience but it's good to reconnect with folks in these weird circumstances. Some attendees at ‘Chester Folk Festival on line’ were in North and South America, others in Belgium. Another advantage of Zoom is that a preferred tipple can be enjoyed whilst in the virtual company of friends old and new and bed is never far away! Technology eh? Let's hope we don't have to rely on it too much longer”.
Timperley - Nigel Hubbell tells me that the club continues to meet via Zoom, every Friday between 8

on the screen and you can either ‘listen only’ or join the ‘room’ fully as a performer or audience. One of the little idiosyncrasies of the system is that just before each performer begins to sing (or recite) whoever is in charge of the night will mute everyone else as ‘latency’ in the system causes distracting audio delays. You can then join in on choruses, but in the privacy of your own home with nobody listening. We had a laugh a few weeks ago when I suggested as the last song of the evening we leave everyone unmuted whilst we all sang - ‘We’ll Meet Again’ in memory of the wonderful Vera Lynn who had just passed away. The din was horrendous with everyone’s timing completely ‘all over the place’. The rendition lasted about 10 seconds before Mel Barratt hurriedly muted all listeners. Try it; you’ll have a laugh! Jim Minall at Friends of Folk has drawn my attention to a project called -‘Folks at Home’. Jim writes: - “Since the Covid crisis hit, FOF has been supporting an initiative started by Richard Digance aimed at supporting artists who overnight had all their income halted. ‘Folks at Home’ is also supported by two legends of the folk world - Maddy Prior and Ashley Hutchings. You can sign up for the ‘Folks at Home 2020 Festival’ with 26 hours of music featuring 36 artists. Alongside this you can also sign up for the ‘Folks at Home Mini 2020 August Festival’”. More details of both can be found at - www.folksathome.co.uk
FESTIVALS:
Here are some dates for your 2021 diaries: - * 15th Wirral Folk Festival rescheduled dates are - 3rd to 6th June. All the advertised main stage acts have agreed to perform and the same applies to many of the festival fringe acts. Regular updates on the festival website will be made i.e. www.wirralfolkonthecoast.com or if you wish you can contact me via folksingerjohn@aol.com or on 0151-678-9902.
* The Lake District Folk Weekend rescheduled dates will be 6th to 8th August. This year’s festival programme will form the basis of next year’s. More info. at - www.thelakedistrictfolkweekend.com * Edgworth Folk Festival - rescheduled dates are 1st to 3rd October 2021. It is anticipated that the acts booked for this year’s festival will be able to perform next year. OK, that’s it for now. Don’t forget, if you wish me to publish any interesting folk news then all you have to do is email me at - folksingerjohn@aol.com I will chat to you in December when it is hoped we will be back singing our heads off once again. John Owen (Secretary - Folk North West)
and 11pm. Details are obtainable by emailing timperleyfolk@gmail.com As I mentioned in the last edition, the regular venue, the Timperley Taverners has closed permanently. So when things get back to something like normal, Nigel will be looking for new premises. Guest act bookings will be reviewed and where possible performers will be offered new dates.
Phoenix - at the British Legion building in Poynton is a guest act club run by Stephen Ridge and the previous organiser (when it was Poynton Folk Club) Dave Hughes is the next performer booked on the 2nd October as ‘Dave Hughes & Friends’. The brilliant Elbow Jane were booked for 4th September but that has now been postponed to a future date next year or thereafter.
Goff Jones at Wrexham reminds me that yet again the club’s December Singers Night will also be a fundraising evening with all proceeds being donated to two local charities. I do not have any further information. Dave Clarke at Bollington has sent me the following: - “For now we’ve kept our guest list from September onwards: - Sept 11 - Anthony John Clarke, Oct 16 - Tom Lewis, Nov 13 - Caffrey, McGurk and Madge, Dec 11 - Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, with the usual provisos that cancellations are likely”. Dave also brought the very sad news that one of the stalwarts of the Bollington folk scene - Arthur Wakefield passed away on 21st May, not to Covid-19, but he had been in a Care Home with Alzheimer’s for the past six or seven years. Arthur ran a folk club in the village of Bollington since the mid 70’s until he retired from the club in 2012. All of the cassettes he made are available on CD with all proceeds going to the Alzheimer’s Society. Details can be found at www.bollyfolk.com Bernard Cromarty at Lymm normally uses a few venues for folk music but of course they are all closed until further notice. Bernard is using, as he calls it, ‘Zoom Cloud’ for his Singers Nights and it is proving very popular. Jim Coan at the Wooden Horse says: - “Our club was supposed to be re-opening in September, but that is looking doubtful as this second wave sweeps around the country, we are however having a weekly Zoom folk club details of which can be found on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/www.woodenhorsefolkclub.uk Non-members can apply to ‘join’ to read club messages and obtain the Zoom meeting number”. Zoom By the way, if you wish to join a Zoom Virtual Folk Club event, the link you need can be found at - www.zoom.us All you need thereafter is to register on the site and add the contacts details which e.g. in my club’s case are: - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87235489319 The Meeting No. is therefore - 872-3548-9319. The instructions are pretty straightforward

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM JOHN OWEN
The below information is published for reference only as I think we all
anticipate it may be quite some time before folk music venues will be
able to reopen and it is probable that most of the below mentioned
planned events will not take place for sometime yet. Most of the be-
low venues have been marked as - ‘CLUB CLOSED until further no-
tice’. The remainder have been marked ‘No update available’. When
the situation changes and venues return to normal, it is essential that
you first make contact with club organisers or venue managers to
check out what the situation is before embarking on any travel plans.
