Cloud computing-The Future Technologies

CHANGING THE WAY IT WORKS

Presented by V.Ranjith Kumar

A pool of highly scalable, abstracted infrastructure, capable of hosting end-customer applications, that is billed by consumption.

Beyond the Desktop: An Introduction to Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is a concept where applications and

files are hosted on a “cloud” consisting of thousands of computers and servers, all linked together and accessible via the Internet.

With cloud computing, everything you do is now web based instead of being desktop based. You can access all your programs and documents from any computer that’s connected to the Internet.

Cloud Computing - cloud services and storage are accessible from anywhere in the world over an Internet connection

B’coz of 6 Key Properties

Cloud computing is User-Centric. Cloud computing is Task-centric. Cloud computing is powerful. Cloud computing is accessible. Cloud computing is intelligent. Cloud computing is programmable

Understanding Cloud ArchitectureUsers select a task or service (either starting an application

or opening a document).User’s request goes to the system management, which finds

the correct resources and then calls the system’s appropriate

provisioning services.These services

> Carve out the necessary resources in the cloud> Launch the appropriate web application> Opens the requested document.

Web application is launchedSystem’s monitoring functions track the usage of the cloud

so that resources are apportioned and attributed to the proper user(s).

User is charged according to the amount of utilities and resources used.

Understanding Cloud StorageWith cloud storage, data is stored on multiple third-

party servers, rather than on the dedicated servers. When storing data, the user sees a virtual server—

that is, it appears as if the data is stored in a particular place with a specific name.

In reality, the user’s data could be stored on any one or more of the computers used to create the cloud.

Data stored in the cloud is secure from accidental erasure or hardware crashes, because it is duplicated across multiple physical machines.

3 Cloud Service Models• Cloud Software as a Service (SaaS)

– Use provider’s applications over a network • Cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS)

– Deploy customer-created applications to a cloud • Cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

– Rent processing, storage, network capacity, and other fundamental computing resources

• To be considered “cloud” they must be deployed on top of cloud infrastructure that has the key characteristics

Companies in the Cloud

Google - Whether you want cloud-based word processing (Google Docs), presentation software (Google Presentations),email (Gmail),or calendar/scheduling functionality (Google Calendar), Google has an offering.

Microsoft – Microsoft offers Windows Live suite of web-based applications, as well as the Live Mesh initiative that’s trying to link together all types of devices, data, and applications in a common cloud-based platform.

Companies in the CloudAmazon has its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), a

web service that provides cloud-based resizable computing capacity for application developers.

IBM has established a Cloud Computing Center to deliver cloud services and research to clients.

Salesforce.com - CRM software solutions and enterprise cloud computing.

Finally …In short, cloud computing enables a shift from the

computer to the user, from applications to tasks, and from isolated data to data that can be accessed from anywhere and shared with anyone.

The user no longer needs to remember where the data is. All that matters is that the data is in the cloud, and thus immediately available to that user

and to other authorized users.
