Attendance & Participation

Research has proven that there is a high correlation between school attendance and academic performance and success, while absence from school is often the greatest single cause of poor performance and achievement.

Plan for Education'

2016 - 2019

'Excellent and innovative education and training are the pivot around which personal fulfilment, a fair society and a successful nation should revolve'

Why do

our

pupils

need to

learn

these

skills?

• The team of teachers here in Clonturk are creative and innovative in the way they teach.

• Developing how students learn will fuel new innovation, opportunities, and help allstudents fulfil their potential.

• Our role as teachers is to understand how students learn. We are aware of many different learning styles in our classrooms and adapt many different techniques. We use the ipads in our classrooms and apply many different teaching and learning techniques as we understand that every pupil is different.

• Embracing the Key Skills of the new junior cycle and teaching the pupils to think critically and creatively about their work. The teaching and learning styles in our classrooms allows the pupils to use digital technology to access, manage and share content.

Teaching and Learning in Science

• Learning is an active

process…Therefore

we need to get

students doing by

being active leaders

of their learning

Teaching and learning in Woodwork

Teaching and learning in Geography

Teaching and Learning in ClonturkThe teachers here have a teaching and learning folder on the one note platform. Teachers will add T and L resources to this folder for everyone to apply in their own classrooms.

The teachers apply these proven strategies in their classrooms every month and write a short reflection on how this benefited the pupils in their classroom.

This allows us to develop a wide range of T and L techniques and to understand how our pupils learn.

Example of reflection on a new teaching and learning strategy

from one of the teachers!

Language is central to thinking….Therefore we need

to get students to talk and think about their thinking

Reflecting on their learning

Through reflection ‘in’ and ‘on’ learning students can:

• become more aware of the knowledge and skills that they have developed

• identify strengths and areas for development

• develop an action plan for future learning

•gain greater understanding of themselves and how they learn

• take more responsibility for their learning

Why a Managed Service?

Mobile Phones

Phones are to be:

• stored in the pupils schoolbag or locker, pupils are not permitted to carry a mobile phone on their person.

• powered off when students arrive in school

• switched off until the pupil is outside the school gate after the school day.

• If a phone goes off in school the phone will be confiscated until the end of the day.

• We would ask that if your child is ill/needs to go home for a reason that they phone from the school office not from their mobile phone.

Homework

• As you are aware, homework is an important part of learning as it reinforces the material covered in class as well as providing experience in how to approach different kinds of questions and examination preparation.

• We all have a key role to play in reinforcing the importance of completing homework on a daily basis. Homework should be presented neatly and students should ensure enough time is spent on questions rather than rushing their work.

• 20 minutes per subject on average.

Zero Tolerance to Bullying• A key objective of Clonturk Community College is to make the school a safe

environment for all. Hence it is vitally important that mutual respect is one of our core values within which bullying should have no place.

• Each and every member of the school community has an important role to play in ensuring that we do everything possible to counteract bullying.

• Our Anti-Bullying Policy is closely linked to our Code of Behaviour, which is based on the concept of mutual respect.

Bullying is defined as unwanted negative behaviour, verbal, psychological or physical, conducted by an individual or group against another person (or persons) and which is repeated over time.

This definition includes cyber-bullying and identity-based bullying (such as homophobic bullying and racist bullying).

What can I do?

It is not advisable to advocate hitting back . Teach students some coping strategies

• Walk Tall

• Walk away

• Teach your child to appear confident

• Stay with friends-avoid bullies

• Avoid provoking a bully

• Take reasonable care of their belongings including their iPad

• Encourage assertiveness not aggression

• Save any abusive mobile phone message and report it to the Gardaí

Encourage them to tell

•Healthy Lifestyle Policy

•Code of Positive Behaviour

•Anti-Bullying

It's different from my old school, but I'm

enjoying it ! At first it is hard getting used to

the new rules like calling your teachers by their first names and wearing no uniforms, but after a while you

get used to it!
