On August 29, 1960, thiny- four excited Freshmen nervously entered the halls of Valparaiso High School. Following registration the students elected class officers: John Komenda, President; Bernard Maly, VicePresident; Jeanne Christensen, Secretary and Judy Lawton, Treasurer. During the first part of October the group was officially initiated. Each student was dressed differently arxl represented a song title. In November Sharron Damisch moved to Valparaiso from Iowa arxl Joined the group making a total of thirty- five freshmen. Mr. Ron Powers was their class sponsor.
As Sophomores the group again increased in number from thiny- five to forty- two. New students included Don Kobza from Brainard, Connie Gerdes from Fremont, Norma Fristoe from Cedar ffiuffs, and Elmer Drewel, Jerome Kratochvil, Kay Pickel arxl James Moles from Raymond. Class elections revealed Elmer Drewel, President; Connie Gerdes, Vice- President; James Moles, Secretary arxl Lynne Wed berg, Treasurer. At the beginning of the year they had a bake sale to raise money for the annual Sophomore Sock Hop. The theme of the sock hop was carried out in a Beatnik setting. Dressed as Beatnik's the majority of the high school students attended the Hop making it a big success. In April the Sophomores had a car- wash and bake sale to increase their class funds. Their class sponsor was Mr. Rolland Fenster.
As the doors of V. H. S. swung open in 1962 there were thiny-eight returning as Juniors. They lost Elmer Drewel, Mary Ann Parmer, Bernard Maly, James Moles and Steve Novotny. Carol Smith of Malcolm joincil the group. Titis year the Student Council was organized arxl the Junior representatives were Jeanne Olristensen, Don Kobza, arxl Rita Masek. One of the major money-making projects of '63 was the magazine sales from which they earned over $800. Other than that the students picked up corn after a corn-picker and then sold the corn. "Boy Wanted" the Junior Class Play was presented on November 20, 1962, urxler the direction of Mrs. Ellen Barrett. 01 May 4th they sponsored the Junior- Senior Banquet and Prom for the Seniors. The hall was decorated in Southern taste to carry out the theme "Urxler The Magnolias." Mrs. Barrett and Mrs. Deanna Mack were both class sponsors.
As Seniors the gourp had dwindled from the Sophomore enrollment of forty-two to a mere thirty- seven. Raymond Benes arxl Gary &rrianek left arxl Magdylen Swarxla arxl Frank Bartek joined the class. Election results are posted above with the exception of Student Council representatives Larry Martin, Jeanne Christensen arxl Don Kobza. On October, the Seniors initiated the new group of Freshmen students, Each student was given a modern song title and asked to dress in relation to the title. The two students with the most original costumes were selected arxl will be given free '64 yearbooks. Supervised by Mrs. Gloria a.Itler, The Senior Class Play, entitled '"The Night of January 16th," was presented on November 22, 1963. TIe profits from the sale of the Bulldog sweatshirts greatly increased the class finances.
The Seniors left Valparaiso late Thursday night, April 9, 1964, to spend their Sneak Trip in Ogallala, Nebraska. They also visited cities and sites along the way arxl arrived home on the night of the twelfth after having a worxlerful weekerxl. Both class sponsors, Mr. Gary Martin arxl Mr. Ervin DeBoer accompanied the group. The Juniors chose "Rendezvous of the Stars" for the theme of the Junior Senior Banquet arxl Prom on May 9th. Baccalaurate Services wereheldinschool gym on Sunday, May 17. On May 19, at Commencement Exercises featuring Senator Harold Stryker of Rising City, the 1964 Senior Class was officially graduated from Valparaiso High SchooL
