Civil War Battles and the Lincoln Assassination

First Battle of Bull Run July 1861

Who remembers why the Union soldiers headed to Manassas, Virginia?

Union leaders wanted a victory so they moved towards Manassas (Bull Run) to attack the Confederates.

This was risky because the Union troops were not fully trained.

Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863

Day 1Union soldiers fight the Confederates to

the north and west of Gettysburg. They end up going through town and the Union soldiers line up at Cemetery Hill.

Day 2

More Union soldiers arrive in Gettysburg. The Union General Meade decided to

defend the hills rather than attack. Union General Gouverneur Warren saw

that there were no soldiers on the Round Top hills.

The army that put cannons on the hills could easily fire on the entire battlefield.

Day 2 Continued

Confederate soldiers reached the top of Cemetery Hill. It looked as if they were going to win the battle.

Union troops fought back and pushed the Confederates down the hill.

The fighting stopped at around midnight.

Day 3 Pickett’s Charge

At about 12:50 in the afternoon Confederate cannons began firing at the center of the Union soldiers.

About 13,000 Confederate soldiers prepared to attack. General George Pickett ordered them to walk quickly and keep close together.

Union soldiers began firing cannons when the Confederates slowed down to climb over a fence.

By 4 in the afternoon Pickett’s charge was finished.

There were more than 6,000 Confederate casualties on day 3.

The Confederates lost the Battle of Gettysburg.

The Civil War ended on April 9th, 1865 when Lee surrendered to Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia.

Many southerners were angry that the Confederacy had lost the Civil War.

After the surrender Lincoln gave a speech that said that certain blacks would gain the right to vote.

A man named John Wilkes Booth began planning Lincoln’s assassination.

Lincoln’s Assassination

John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln on April 14th, 1865 at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C.

He shot Lincoln then jumped from the balcony to the stage below.

Lincoln was carried across the street to a home where he was seen by a doctor but there was nothing that could be done.

Lincoln died the next morning.Booth was found and killed on April 26th,

1865.
