Welcome to CE 525Civil Engineering Applications of GIS

Instructors

Reg Souleyrette, Ph.D., P.E.

Eric R. Green, GISP, PE, MSCE

Tony Fields, GIS Analyst

Student Introductions• Your Name• Degree/Focus• GIS Experience• Something About Yourself• This is for a grade

What CE 525 will cover• Terms and concepts related to Geographic

Information Systems• Management of spatial databases, particularly

those related to Civil Engineering• Data collection using GPS• Use of ArcGIS to solve specific spatial problems

What is Considered for Course Grade• Homework• Attendance• Quizzes• Exam 1• Exam 2• Poster Presentation• Final Exam?

What is GIS?

Interesting Applications of GIS• Esri (Environmental Systems Research Institute)

publishes story maps with three goals: • To showcase interesting and important topics• To explore techniques and best practices for map-based

storytelling• To help enable people to make their own story maps• http://storymaps.esri.com/home/

Important Online Resources• Course Website• http://www.engr.uky.edu/~rsouley/CE 525/• (class schedule updated regularly)

• ESRI’s Web Courses • http://training.esri.com• Must create ESRI Global Account (instructions on the

website)

ESRI Training

• Learning ArcGIS 10• 8 Training Modules• 24 Hours of Work• Some class time given

• Use Certificates to “turn in” homework• Print or Email PDF

Installing ArcGIS• ArcGIS is installed in OHR computer lab• Instructions on class website• Download trial from ESRI• ISO available from UK if required – see an instructor

• To install on a MAC you must install BootCamp and Windows XP or 7

• ArcGIS will need to be activated online every time you load the program (instructions on website)• For laptops, you will need to consider this when you are offline

Must be installed by Friday, Jan 11 if you want to work off-campus (instructors will be out of the office Tuesday of next week)

Quizzes• Write your name on a playing card• At any point a random card may be drawn during

class• Most of these questions will be based on the

training modules• They will be used to encourage class participation

and attendance

database based on a specific criteria?

• Query.

Quiz #1• 4.  This is a classic GIS tool for analysis of roads,

pipelines and railroads used in transportation and utility network applications. This process generates point or linear geometry for database record events referenced by their position along a linear feature. What is it?

• Dynamic Segmentation or Linear Reference System

Quiz #1• 5. What is the name of a geographic features that

divide the world into discrete square or rectangular cells laid out in a grid; each cell can have a value that is used to represent some characteristic of that location?
