STEM Kit Program

FY13: NDEP provided $250,000 to expand STEM outreach to CAP squadrons, AFJROTC and CAP educator members

5 STEM Kit subject/career areas –flight simulators, rockets, model aircraft & remote control, astronomy & robotics

Selected vendors distribute kit products; NHQ/AE distributes associated educational materials developed for kits

Current program stats:

- 400 requests filled; 70% to CAP units

- Over 40,000 youth impacted

- Evaluations averaging 4.8 out of 5.0

FY14: $200,000 for program continuation

Future: expand and enhance kit components

Aerospace Connections in Education (ACE) K-6 elementary program; began in 2007

Patterned after cadet program:

- Aerospace-themed: academics; character; physical fitness

21 hands-on, inquiry-based lessons per grade

- Aligned with national academic standards

Lessons conducted by teachers, parents, volunteers

Almost 100,000 youth impacted thus far

- 108 schools; 657 teachers; 20,000 youth; 27 wings last year

- 91% teacher retention

- 46% avg increase in student STEM Knowledge

- 26% increase in standardized science thinking skills

- Introduces educators, community, & youth to CAP programs

- Offer to have Seniors and/or Cadets teach some lessons

- Attend school events to present ACE awards & mentorship

- Introduce Cadet Program to 5th and 6th graders

Promotes careers in cyber security & other STEM disciplines

Two divisions – Open Division (high schools) & All Service Division (CAP, JROTC, Navy Sea Cadets)

261 CAP teams in 2013; encouraging all unit involvement

Excellent fall & winter NO COST national cadet special activity National level competition with scholarships and awards

CAP’s National Lead: 2011-2012 Champions; 2012 Cyber Forensics; 2013 Cisco Cyber Hardware; Cyber Security Module

- Earned 2013 Cyber Security Exchange’s Cyber Innovator Honorable Mention Award at MeriTalk’s Cyber Brainstorm

- Educate AEOs on job requirements/resources available

- AEOs depart with annual Plan of Action

- 2013: approx 150 AEOs attended 4 schools

- 5th summit this year – Annual Conference

- Develop computerized POA & Activity Report

- Create AE specialty suffixes

- Expand AEO Schools- 3 PD levels: wing, region, national

- Revise/update CAPR 280-2, CAPP 215, CAPP15
