CONSOLIDATED PLAN FACT SHEET

WHAT IS THE CONSOLIDATED PLAN?Each year, the City of Los Angeles receives Federal grant funds to assist businesses create jobs, provide job training for adults and youth, improve neighborhoods through projects that eliminate slum and blight, and provide gang prevention programs, affordable housing, services for seniors and the disabled, and fair housing. These grant funds are limited and need to be prioritized and targeted in a way that will provide the most benefit to the most people. Once our needs and goals are prioritized, we will submit them to the Federal government in what is known as the Consolidated Plan.

WHY ARE WE HOLDING COMMUNITY MEETINGS?The Federal government and the City want to obtain input from the community to identify the needs and establish goals for how the funds should be invested in our neighborhoods. We want the community to partner with the City and other agencies in determining how the funds should be spent.

HOW WILL IT BENEFIT YOU?Federal grant funds can be seen in action in your neighborhood through Federally-funded child care centers, after-school programs for children, hot meals and health screenings for our elderly and disabled residents, training and assistance for small businesses, services for the homeless and domestic violence shelters, and so many other programs and projects.

WHAT IS THE CONSOLIDATED PLAN NOT GOING TO DO?The Consolidated Plan will not create changes overnight nor solve our immediate needs. It is not an unlimited fund or grant; rather it is a plan on how we will implement our vision for our neighborhoods over the long term.

WITH SO MUCH NEED IN THE CITY, HOW WILL THESE FUNDS BE TARGETED?In order to make the most use of the limited funds the City receives, our strategy is to take advantage of the additional funds the City will receive for public transportation to get more “bang for our buck.” We want to invest our Federal funds on projects that provide affordable housing and job creation near transit corridors such as the Expo Line, the Gold Line, the Orange Line, the Vermont corridor, and in areas of need in the Harbor, West Los Angeles and the Central City. We want to create more livable and healthy communities where services and programs are available and accessible; where people can walk, bike or take public transportation to work and school.
