Circuit Symbol Quiz 5 June 2012

• Draw and name these circuit symbols

Draw a circuit with;one battery, one open switch, one globe and three wires

Making a BatteryMaking an Electrochemical Cell

Battery and electrochemical cells

• What we have been calling a battery should really called a cell.

• Two or more cells together make a battery of cells.

Different types of electrochemical cell

Mobile phone electrochemical cell

Camera electrochemical cell

Car battery

A hybrid car uses a battery and fuel to drive the wheels.

What do we already know about electrochemical cells?

Inside an electrochemical cell

electrodes

electrolyte paste

Making an electrochemical cell

Equipment

• 1 copper beaker

• 1 strip of magnesium

• 1 box of wires

• 1 Micro Ammeter

• 1 stirring rod

• 1 measuring cylinder

• 1 bottle of distilled water

• 1 switch

• 1 piece of steel wool to clean the magnesium strip

Preparing the parts of the cell

Cleaning the electrodes

• Use the steel wool to clean the magnesium strip until it s shiny.

Making the electrolyte solution

• Measure 50 mL of distilled water and pour it into the copper beaker

• measure 1 pop-stick end of sodium chloride and add it to the water in the copper beaker and stir.

In your Science book

Heading – Making an electrochemical cell

• Parts of an electrochemical cell

An electrolyte is …

An electrode is …

• Describe the appearance of the magnesium electrode after it was cleaned.

Preparing the parts of the cell

Making the electrolyte solution

• Measure 50 mL of distilled water and pour it into the copper beaker.

• measure 1 pop-stick end of sodium chloride and add it to the water in the copper beaker and stir.

Connecting the parts of the cellWire 1• Connect 1 wire to the magnesium strip.• Connect the other end of this wire to a switch terminal.

Wire 2• Connect another wire to the other terminal of the switch. • Connect the other end of this wire to the ammeter terminal.

Wire 3• Connect another wire to the other terminal of the ammeter.• Connect the other end of this wire to the copper beaker.

Connecting the components of the circuit

CONNECTING THE SWITCH

• How do you know that electricity is flowing through the circuit?

Draw your electrochemical cell and the circuit.

Using another electrolyte

• Pour out the sodium chloride electrolyte .

• Measure out 50mL of ethanoic acid and pour it into the copper beaker.

• Dip in the magnesium and observe the ammeter.

Making exploding “cells”

Equipment

• film canister

• 10 mL ethanoic acid

• 2 pop stick ends of sodium bicarbonate

• add together, put lid on and STAND BACK!!!
