This weekend we remember those who have died in the past year. Our family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers. We need to come together as a parish community to remember them. To pray for our loved ones is a way for us to come back to life ourselves. Greif and sorrow, mourning and sadness do touch all of us, but such emotions are not the entire story. We are the disciples of Jesus. God has raised Him up from the dead to die no more. This time of remembering and prayers for our deceased is a simple way to let God’s Spirit touch our hearts. Do not give into grief, like those people who have no hope. May our God give us courage to stand with the Risen Lord. May God give us hope to look forward to the days to come. We are re-minded of this wonderful hope in the words of the funeral mass: one day we shall see our loved ones again. We shall greet them with a joy no one can take from us. Msgr. Frank Kelley

Reflection on 32nd Sunday Ordinary time: Mark 12-38-44 “Calling the disciples to Himself” (Mark 12:43) Jesus is telling his apostles: I have a message for you, please listen. The context of Chapter 12 in St. Mark shows a dialogue between the scribes, and Pharisees and Jesus’ response to them on “the hot- topics”: loving God and loving neigh-bor/ paying taxes/ places of honor/marriage and the after-life/ David’s son/ Scribes and widows/outward appearanc-es and inner practice of religion. Jesus answers each with tact and makes each question an opportunity for teaching about the inner life of God. In this passage, (v 41) Jesus is pointing to the widow’s total sincerity of generosity. She gives her last two coppers to God. She does not think about her next meal or rent or to-morrow. She is truly poor. Her generosity to God knows no limits. She gives with all her heart. Jesus sees this and comments to his friends about this. She does “not give out of her abundance but out of her poverty, her whole liv-ing” (v 44). She relies on God for the rest. “The fatherless and the widow he sustains.” (Responsorial psalm 146) The lowly widow has great prominence in the eyes of Je-sus. Like the widow, Jesus give his whole self for us. He does not hold back. Look at the cross. Is there anything more that Jesus could have done? What of us? Look at the examples the Scriptures present to us today: the widow of Zarephath, (first reading), the wid-ow at the treasury (Gospel), our loving crucified and risen Lord Jesus. What “two copper coins “ (v42) can we add to the treasury of His love and our neighbor’s good? What does Jesus say to us?

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 8, 2015
Misericordiae Vultus DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO
